Howes -- Sen. Gloria Jeanne Howes, 72, of Gallup, NM died Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. She was born August 12, 1930 in Decatur, IL. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Retired Senator Gloria Howes was appointed as New Mexico Woman of the Year in 1994 by Gov. Bruce King. She wore many hats throughout her lifetime and was a friend to everyone. Beginning as a teacher with the BIA school for Navajos in Keams Canyon, AZ in 1950 and going on to the Navajo reservation and public schools in Shiprock and Gallup. Howes entered county government in 1988. She served three terms as New Mexico Senator for Cibola and McKinley Counties and retired in 2000. She enlivened those long, late-night Senate Sessions with her wonderful sense of humor that only Gloria could do yet managed to negotiate tough issues with compassion and wisdom. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, December 6, 2002 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Rollie Mortuary, 401 East Nizhoni Blvd., Gallup, NM. Services will be held Saturday, December 7, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1800 Red Rock Dr., Gallup, NM. Rev. Layloni Drake will be officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park on Saturday, December 7, 2002. For those friends wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers, please contact Battered Family Services, Inc. 207 South Strong, Gallup, NM 87301. Survivors include, husband, Douglas Howes Sr. of Gallup, NM; sons, Jeff Carnal of Gallup, Kent Carnal of Henderson, NV, Michael Carnal of Colorado Springs, CO and stepson, Douglas Howes, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Helen Oates of Santa Fe, NM; brother, John Perry of Albuquerque; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Howes was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Ruth Perry; and daughter, Ruth Ann Carnal-Oates. Pallbearers will be Joe DiGregorio, Karl Gillson, Danny Howes, Charlie Kauzlarich, Kevin Marshall and Senator Lidio Rainaldi. Honorary Pallbearers will be Edward T. Begay, David Lebeck, Geoff Martin, Tom Mortenson, Senator John Pinto and Bobby Wallace. Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
