Smith -- Winnifred (Winnie) M. Smith, 86, beloved mother, sister, and grandmother passed away Sunday, December 15, 2002 in Albuquerque. Her sudden passing will leave a huge void in the lives of her family. Winnifred was born on November 6, 1916 in Portales, NM to the late James L. May and Lula May Anderson. She attended school in Portales and was in the first freshman class at Eastern New Mexico University. She also attended Stephens College and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in Portales until she met and married George W. Smith, Jr., who preceded her in death after a marriage of 52 years. Winnifred and her husband lived in Springer, Clayton, and Tucumcari, before moving to Albuquerque in 1965. Winnifred was a tough lady with courage, having suffered from Multiple Sclerosis for over 55 years. She was an inspiration to all those who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Shiplet and husband, Wayne; her granddaughters, Jennifer and Keri, who she loved deeply, of Albuquerque; her only brother, James A. May and wife, Elizabeth of Belen; and many family and friends. Her family would like to thank Delores Stewart and the staff of Golden Years for the love and care they gave Winnie the last few years. Graveside services will be held Friday, 1:00 p.m., at Portales Cemetery, Portales, NM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Christian Childrenťs Home, 1356 New Mexico 236, Portales, NM 88130-9411. Arrangements by French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
