GUTIERREZ -- Mr. Selso J. Gutierrez, 74, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on January 11, 2005 at home following a brief illness. Mr. Gutierrez is survived by his four sisters, Juanita Leathers and husband, David who were caregivers to Selso, Erma Martinez, Margaret Sanchez and Elisea Maes; two brothers, Nevarez Gutierrez and wife, Linda, Ignacio (Sam) Gutierrez and wife, Ruth; his goddaughter and caregiver, Diane Alarcon; his godson, Leon Leathers; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Gutierrez was preceded in death by his parents, Leonardo and Amalia Gutierrez and a brother, Eddie Gutierrez. Mr. Gutierrez was a member of the Catholic Church, San Jose Parish, a Veteran of the United States Navy serving in the Korean Conflict and a member of the VIP Bowling League at Leisure Bowl. A visitation for Mr. Gutierrez will be Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 at San Martin Catholic Church, 8301 Camino de San Martin SW with a Rosary to be recited at 10:00 a.m. by Deacon Andy Chavez and Mass of the Resurrection to celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Vance. Interment will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. with full Military Honors. Pallbearers will be, Mike Leathers, Roger Leathers, Gerald Alarcon, Martin Leathers, Joshua Leathers and Mark Murmer. Honorary pallbearer will be, Leon Leathers. MARTINEZ -- Mary Roybal Martinez passed away on January 5, 2005 with her loving daughter, Barbara and son-in-law, John by her side. Mary was born in Santa Fe, NM on April 21, 1922 living most of her life in New Mexico. She Married Fred B. Martinez of Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1939 at St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe. She adopted her husband's extended family as her own; even living with them while Fred served his country overseas during World War II. She and Fred moved to Albuquerque where she resided until moving to Las Cruces in October 2000 to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Mary was a devoted Catholic; she was fiercely independent and insisted on living life on her terms. She loved to cook and garden and especially loved her grandsons, Stephan and Nicolas. Her recipes for posole and empanaditas are Christmas traditions. Mary is survived by her daughter, Barbara Mexal and her husband, John; grandsons, Nicolas Mexal and Stephan Mexal and his wife, Sharon; her faithful and dearest friend, Viola Chavez; and Fred's brother, sister, and nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Fred; her parents, Juan and Matilde Roybal; a brother, Demetrio "Diamond" Roybal; and an infant daughter, Dorothy. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at St. Albert the Great Newman Center with Father Mitch Dowalgo officiating. The Rite of Committal will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday January 12, 2005 at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. MARTINEZ -- Procopio. The family of Procopio Martinez would like to thank all their relatives and friends for their kind expressions of sympathy, love, and support during this time of loss. Special thanks to Monsignor Cipio Salas, Father Dennis Garcia, Father John Rebold, Deacon Pilar Garcia, Deacon James Baca, Deacon Gregory Archunde, and as always Deacon Andy Chavez for making Procopio's Rosary and Funeral Services so special and so beautiful. Also, a very special thank you to Dr. Vicente Ximenes for the very beautiful and memorable Eulogy he did for Procopio, and to Sister Bernice Garcia for everything she did for the Martinez family during this difficult time. Also, thanks to Dr. William Abeyta, formerly of Lovelace Medical Center and other Lovelace staff and health providers (too numerous to list all of them) for the many years of excellent medical care given him, as well as to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the VA Hospital where he received wonderful care in his last few days of life.

BARELA -- Rose T. Barela, 95, passed away at home January 7, 2005. A lifelong resident of New Mexico, she was born in Tularosa, NM, September 10, 1909, married Leonardo Barela December 26, 1925, and had six children. She is survived by three daughters: Angelina Pena, Rosie Chavez of Las Cruces, NM, Lupe Torres of Colombus, MS; two sons, Willie Barela of Las Cruces, NM, Leonardo Barela Jr. of Tuson, AZ; 227 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren, making it a 6 generation family tree. A Memorial Service will be held at New Beginnings Church of God, 3601 Montgomery Blvd. NE 87109, on Monday, January 10, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers send donations to New Beginnings Church of God to fund Youth Activities. MARQUEZ -- Chris "Funky" Marquez, 25, of Santa Rosa, NM died Thursday, January 6, 2005 in a work- related accident on I-40 east of Tucumcari, NM. Chris was born May 4, 1979, the son of Louie and Susan (Paiz) Marquez. He was reared from age 6 in Puerto De Luna, and attended Santa Rosa Public Schools. Chris excelled in track and football and participated in the 1993 and 1996 football playoffs and was a member of the 1995 AA Santa Rosa Lions State Runner Up Football team. Chris was also an outstanding academic student and a member of the National Honor Society. Following graduation in 1997 he attended Luna Vocational Technical School where he received his Associate Degree in Horticulture. He worked for his grandfather, Mauricio Paiz, for a short time in Santa Rosa until he began his employment with San-Bar Construction Corp. in March 2000. He was part of a highway stripe painting crew and traveled throughout the state. Chris was a member of Nuestra Senora de Refugio Catholic Church in Puerto De Luna. According to his parents, "he loved landscaping and working in the yard at his home. He was a great kid, very responsible and was always willing to help anyone." Chris was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Joe Montano. Survivors include his parents, Louie and Susan Marquez of the family home in Puerto de Luna, NM; two brothers, Ernesto "Neto" Marquez, and Jose Luis Marquez, both of the family home; one sister, Mary Frances Marquez of Santa Rosa; a niece, Anastacia Romero of Santa Rosa; paternal grandmother, Petra Montano of Santa Rosa; paternal grandmother, Mary Marquez of Santa Rosa; paternal grandfather, Benny Marquez of Greenfield, OH; maternal grandparents, Mauricio and Frances Paiz of Sierra Vista, AZ. Also surviving are numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins, including his Godparents, uncle John Montano, aunt Betteena Pizano, and uncle John Paiz. He is also survived by many other classmates, co-workers, and good friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2005 from St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa; Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2005 from Nuestra Senora de Refugio Catholic Church in Puerto De Luna, NM with Father Bill Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow at Nuestra Senora de Refugio Cemetery in Puerto De Luna. Pallbearers will include David "Hossie" Sanchez, Mark Chavez, John Montano, Jimmy Sanchez, John Paiz, and Penny Pruitt. DE LUNA -- Estella. Mrs. Estella De Luna, 91, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on January 4, 2005. Mrs. De Luna is survived by her children, Gavina Gallegos, Cecilia Crabtree and husband, Frank, Florenio De Luna and wife, Patty, Eduardo De Luna and wife, Mary, Ramon Francia and wife, Rose Anne; she is also survived by one sister, Maria Alfaro; three brothers, Juan Alderete, Salvador Alderete and wife, Angie and Fred Alderete; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mrs. De Luna was preceded in death by her daughter, Maria Oralia Garcia. Mrs. De Luna was a member of the Catholic Church. A visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A final visitation for Mrs. De Luna will be Friday morning from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW with Mass of the Resurrection to be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. by a Franciscan Friar. VALLEJOS -- Reynaldo. Funeral services for Reynaldo "Ray" Vallejos, 49, of Albuquerque will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2005, at Christ's Church 2200 N. Sycamore with Pastor Tommy Vallejos of Faith Outreach Church Clarksville, TN and Pastor Jerry Chavez of Christ's Church officiating. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery. Ray passed away Thursday, December 30, 2004, in Albuquerque. Ray was born on Febuary 26, 1955 to Felix Vallejos and Guadalupe Lopez Gonzales here in Roswell. He served his country with the United States Army and worked security in Albuquerque for Raley's Department Store. Ray is survived by his wife, Talie, of Albuquerque; children, Anthony Ray of Roswell, Susan Ray of Roswell, Rudy of Albuquerque, Ray Ray of Albuquerque, Richard Ray of Roswell, Joseph Anthony of Deming, Eugene Ray of Deming, JosephRay Jerry of Albuquerque, Selena Marie of Albuquerque, and EddieRay Brian of Albuquerque; his mother, Lupe Lopez of Roswell; his father, Felix Vallejos; numerous grandchildren; brothers, Bobby and his wife, Bridget, of Albuquerque, Eddie and his wife, Frances, of Albuquerque, and Tommy and his wife, Carol of Clarksville, TN; sisters, Cary Candelaria and her husband, Steve, and Nena Vallejos both of Roswell; half-brothers, Leroy of Belen, Albert, Eddie, and Teddy, all of Roswell; half-sisters, Henryetta, Elizabeth, Amanda, and Marina, all of Roswell; and numerous nieces and nephews. GARCIA -- Jose Agapito (J.A.) Garcia, 90, a resident of Albuquerque since 1975, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Monday, January 3, 2005. He was surrounded by love and prayers with his daughters, son, and grandchildren. He lived a full life and will be remembered by everyone whose lives he touched with his music. J.A. was a talented musician whose music was well known and enjoyed throughout the state. In 1933 he married his beloved Antonia Otero who preceded him in death. From their marriage were born 14 children: ten daughters, and four sons. Two daughters and two sons have preceded him in death: Louisa Luna, Esquipula, Lincoln, and Ray Garcia. He is survived by daughters: Juanita Ortiz, Pauline Gurule, Berlinda Garcia, Lucy Bibiano and her husband Leroy, all of Albuquerque, Bea Brooks of Westminster, California, Lila Gonzales and her husband Juan of Willard, Christine Storey and her husband Frank of Rio Rancho, Rita Chavez and Joe L. Chavez, and Louella Gauna and husband Joe, all of Vaughn, NM. He is also survived by sons: Sal Garcia and his wife Vera from Albuquerque, NM, and Sidro Garcia and his wife Susan from Las Vegas, NM. He and his wife also assisted in raising several grandchildren, including Richard Ortiz and Viola Madrid. He was especially proud of his 40 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren. J.A. was retired from the AT & SF Railroad for over 30 years. He spent over 40 years with the company working in various positions. He also served as Mayor of Willard NM for several years, between 1950 - 1964. He served as the Vice-President of the Estancia Board of Education, between 1960 - 1964. He was well known for his music as Joe Garcia and his Orchestra during the 1940s and 1950s. Services will be held in Willard, NM, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, January 4 at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, January 5 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on January 6 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held at the Willard Cemetery. Pallbearers are: Fernanda Harmon, Antoinette Gonzales, Ruth Butler, Viola Madrid, Rachael Bibiano, and Debra Thompson. APODACA -- Joe Richard Apodaca, age 72, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2005. A lifetime resident of Albuquerque, he worked as a cook for Court Cafe and Lindy's. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Padilla and brother-in-law, Scott Jackson. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lena Apodaca; children, Jerry Kennedy, Fredrick Michael Apodaca and wife Joella, Richard Apodaca, Janet Iafonaro and husband Carl, Chris Apodaca and Rose Chavez, Shelly Herrera and husband Raul; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Viola Jackson, Lucille Flores, Grace Andre; numerous other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. Memorial services will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna Rd. NW. on Wednesday, January 5, 2005, with a Rosary being recited at 11:00 am, followed by a celebration of the Mass.
