Wittle -- Elwood "Woody" Wittle, a resident of Albuquerque, died on Saturday, May 25, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mildred; daughters, Wanita Kirkman of Albuquerque and Peggie Metz and husband, Rick, of Reno, Nevada; grandchildren, Jason Kirkman, Jeff Kirkman and wife, Connie, Adam Morgan and Timothy Morgan; great-grandson, Zachary Canaan. He was preceded in death by; his sons, Charles and Donald; and sister, Dorothy Linsenbach. Woody served his country in the US Navy during World War II and was a member of the VFW - Belen. He was a pilot for TWA for 27 years. Woody was a resident of Rio Communities for 30 years until moving to Albuquerque in 2002. He was an active board member for 28 year and past president of Valley Improvement Association in Rio Communities. He was also a longtime member of Tierra del Sol Country Club. He was a caring husband, father, grandfather and very active civic leader. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery Shelter on Thursday, May 30, 2002. Doris was a member of the Minnesota Teacher's Association, the Eastern Star, and the Sanctuary Class at First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, crossword puzzles and playing the organ. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held Monday, 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 314 Lead SW, with Dr. Terry Anderson officiating. Barr -- Col. Bernice Stone Barr, U.S.A.F. (Ret.), died Saturday, May 18, 2002. Born in 1918 in Alabama, he grew up in a family of twelve in Mississippi. He joined the United States Army Air Corps graduating from Randolph AFB, Texas Flight School, class of 40C. Col. Barr flew B-17's in excess of 100 combat missions in WWII serving in both the Pacific and European theaters. He also served during the Korean War. He received his BS degree from The University of Kansas and his master's degree from The George Washington University. Col. Barr started the Air Force ROTC program at Florida State University in 1948. He completed the Army Command and General Staff School, Armed Forces Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, earning a certificate presented by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Col. Barr served as base commander at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico from 1961-1966 before serving as Vice Wing Commander at Tachikawa AFB, Japan during the Viet Nam conflict. In 1969, he returned to Kirtland prior to retiring in 1970. Included in the many decorations awarded to Col. Barr during his distinguished 30-year career, were the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and the French Croix de Guerre. He was a founding member of the 99th Bomb Group Historical Society and a founding member of Hope Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Doris Jane Barr; a son, The Rev. David L. Barr and wife Patsy; a daughter, Rowena Jane Ross and husband Ronald; four grandchildren, Maj. Andrew M. Barr and wife Anne, Michael C. Ross and wife Kelly, Robert S. Barr and wife Udora and Katherine J. Ross; two great-grandchildren, Madeline R. Barr and Grace A. Barr; two sisters, Blanche Cooper and Inez Conaway and husband Bob; a brother, Cedric C. Barr; and a brother-in-law, Donald J. Engelking and wife Marilyn. An Episcopal Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, May 22nd, 11:00 a.m., at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle SE, with The Rev. Kathryn M. Newman officiating and The Rev. Suzanne H. Ebel assisting. A reception will be held at the church immediately after the service. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m., at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be given in Bernie Barr's memory to Hope Episcopal Church, 5345 Wyoming NE, Suite 107, Albuquerque, NM 87109. Garcia -- Topanga M. Garcia passed away on Saturday May 18, 2002 in Albuquerque. She is survived by her parents, Jessie Garcia and Angelica C. Baca and also by her grandparents, Anna May Sotelo, Steffie Rivera. Funeral Services for Topanga will be held on Thursday at Intenational All Faith Center where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be James Baca, Paul Bryant, Donald Duan, David Dominguez Felipe Sotelo. A Service will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.. Griego -- Gilbert A. Griego, age 85, a prominient Vaughn business man pased away May 20, 2002 at his residence in Vaughn, NM after an illness. Gilbert was born September 7, 1916 in Vaughn to the home of Serafin and Celestina Sanchez Griego. He was reared and attended schools in Vaughn. Gilbert served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Helen Chavez on September 25, 1939 in Vaughn. Gilbert and Helen operated the Desert Motel and Gilberts Grocery Store and Hardware for many years in Vaughn. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Vaughn. Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Arnold Griego, his brothers, Nick Griego, Serafin Griego, Efren Griego, his sisters, Flora Chavez and Irene Parras. Survivors include his wife, Helen Griego of the family home in Vaughn; his sons, Ruben Griego of Vaughn and Jerry Griego and wife, Erlinda of Albuquerque; his daughters, Ethel Griego of Albuquerque, Theresa Sisneros and husband, Herman of Irvine, CA and Nadine Tinagero of Albuquerque.. Also surviving is his brother, Alex Griego of Vaughn; his sisters, Virginia Griego, Maggie Chavez, Vera Chavez and Amelia Kelly all of Albuquerque; ten grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. from St. Marys Church in Vaughn. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. also from St. Marys Church with Father John Jasinski officiating.. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Vaugh. Serving as Pallbearers are Arthur Griego, Ruben Griego, Jr., Johnny Tapia, Jr., Arnold Chavez, Mark Madrid and Steve Chavez. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Albert Perez, Louis Archibeque, Paul Madrid, Lalo Padilla, Donald Morales, Jessie Trujillo, Alex Griego and Alfonso Chavez. Mcgrath -- In Loving Memory of Donald W. Basler -- Eva M. Basler, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002. She is survived by her sons, Donald J. Basler and wife, Cathi of Parker, CO and Timothy J. Basler and wife, Yoshimi of Roswell; daughter, Cynthia A. McMurtry of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Donald McMurtry, Zachary Basler, Ryan Basler, Sean Basler, Tracy Basler, Tony Basler and Mark Basler; great-grandchildren, Christoffer Basler, Carli Basler and Alexandria Basler; sister, Lorraine Green of Dubuque, IA; and niece, Pat Miranda of Amarillo, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Donald C. Basler. Mrs. Basler was a member of Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church.
