LEWIS, CAROL (STECKBAUER) Carol Lewis, formerly Carol Steckbauer, passed away from a cerebral aneurysm on December 2, 2014 at the age of 73. She was surrounded by family and passed peacefully. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank Zabukovec, and Nona and Larry Genebach, as well as her infant son, Billy. Carol is survived by her three daughters Kathy Otero (Phillip), Ann Lathrop (Michael), and Susan Carter (Bill). She leaves adoring grandchildren Richard Sanchez, Frances Fuller (Robert), Mariah Steckbauer, Ryann Carter, Victor Samuel Armijo, and Jada Carter (in appropriate pecking order. Lol). She leaves behind two sisters, Sharon Luke and Susan Munday of Virginia. Carol was an Army brat, having lived in Germany, Japan, and China among other locations, traveling back to Kenosha, Wisconsin to spend her summers with her beloved grandmothers Anna and Nellie, as well as her father, Frank and wife, Adeline. Having completed her high school education early, she entered St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Racine, Wisconsin. She completed the program after her marriage to Bill Steckbauer and the birth of her first child, Kathy. She worked at Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh, Wisconsin before moving with her husband and three daughters to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1971, at which time she attained employment at Lovelace Bataan Medical Center. While employed there, she earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Hospital Administration, working her way up into the position of Assistant Administrator. After Lovelace was sold to HCA, she moved to a Quality Assurance/Risk Management position in the St. Joseph's Healthcare Systems until they sold out to Ardent. Carol thought that was a good time to retire. During her career she advocated, along with others, for a state level and national level Nurse's Day with the assistance of Mayor David Rusk, Governor Bruce King, and State Representative Manual Lujan, Jr., and was part of the contingent to meet with then Vice President George Bush Sr. at the White House. In 2009, Carol was awarded the Nursing Legend Award from the New Mexico Nursing Excellence Awards, Mountain West Division. There will be a celebration of Carol's life and accomplishments Saturday, December 6th at 10:30 AM at Riverside Funeral Home, 225 San Mateo NE in Albuquerque 505-764-9663 with a small reception to follow at Riverside. MARTINEZ, LEO F. Leo F. Martinez went home to the Lord on Friday, November 21, 2014. He was born in Roy, NM on July 27, 1930. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Mary Montoya-Martinez; two sisters Evelyn De Herrera and husband Alfred and Viola Griego. He is also survived by seven children Leo and wife Yong of Colorado Springs, CO, Celina and husband Arturo of Bernalillo, Cecilia of Englewood, CO, Josie of Ft. Collins, CO, Marcy of Albuquerque, Edward and wife Amy of Bernalillo and Virginia and husband Dominic of Algodones. He was blessed with 16 grandchildren, Rebecca and husband Henry, lena and husband Mark, Salomon and wife Selena, Layla and husband Joey, Daniel, Anitra and fiance Ray, Mark and wife Raelee, Steven and wife Tracy, Angelina and husband Dustin, Erika and husband Josh, Michael, Elicia and fiance Marian, Kristina and husband Dwayne, David, Leona and Analisa. He also had 25 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Adrian, Matthew, Quentin, Mia, Samantha, Stephen, Dominique, Savannah, Derrick, Alex, Anthony, Aiyana, Danika, Evangeline, Liliana, Isaiah, Isaac, Maya, David, Alexus, Antonio, Damian, Noah and Suchel. He had many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Celina Martinez, brothers Louie, Joe and Sammy; and sisters Della Velasquez, Rachel Lujan and Mary Rivera. Leo was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will truly be missed by all. He retired from Shollenbarger Woodtreating Co. after 42 years and enjoyed working on various projects after retiring in 1994. He was a devout Catholic and until recently attended Mass almost daily. Funeral services for Leo will be held on Friday, November 27, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springer, NM. Rosary will commence at 9:30 am with the Mass of the Resurrection immediately following. Arrangements are being handled by Alderete Funeral Home Raton, NM.

SANCHEZ, GILBERT R. Gilbert R. Sanchez, age 73, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque who grew up in the community of Barelas, died Friday, November 14, 2014. He was a devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife of 46 years, Anita L. Sanchez; sons, Michael G. Sanchez and wife, Angela, Anthony Sanchez and Kathy and her kids, Daniel Sanchez and wife, Valerie, and Joseph Sanchez and Sharon Turano; grandchildren, Steven, Christina, Corina, Arianna, Elena, Luis, Isaac, Elijah, Madison, and Angelina; great-grandchildren, Serenity, Aria, and Serina; sisters, Loretta Lopez, Mercy Gurule and husband Jake, Valentina Ruland and husband Joe, Mary Grossette, Josie Gonzales, and Gloria Sanchez; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dominguez, Viola Baca and husband, Joe Morrison, Celia Martinez, Frances Parks, and Becky Tipton and husband Harry; two brothers-in-law, Sam Vivian and wife, Dottie, and Larry Vivian and wife, Donna; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Premitivo and Margarita Sanchez. Gilbert was born in 1941 in Belen, New Mexico and served in the US Marine Corps from 1966-1969 as part of the First Battalion Third Marines Alpha Company. He served in the Battle of Con Thien, Operation Hickory where he was wounded and received two Purple Hearts. Medals also awarded include Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal. Gilbert worked for many years as a dispatcher and retired from APS. He was a member of the VFW, Post 99, and PVA. Gilbert never met a stranger and always felt comfortable in any setting. He loved to meet people and listen to music, watch boxing and surround himself with family and friends. Gilbert will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A Rosary will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at 7:00 pm at St. Jude Thaddeus, 5712 Paradise Blvd. NW with a Memorial Mass to be held on Friday, November 21, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at St. Jude Thaddeus with interment to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Anthony Sanchez, Daniel Sanchez, Elijah Perea, Isaac Sanchez, Joseph Sanchez, Luis Sanchez, Michael Sanchez and Steven Sanchez. PENA, JOHN ORLANDO John Orlando Pena, 84, of Albuquerque, NM passed away on November 11, 2014, losing a long battle with kidney disease. John (Sonny) was born in Taos, NM on April 20, 1930. He was a 1948 graduate of Boys Town High School in Boys Town, NE. A Korean War Veteran, John enlisted in the U. S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX during the Korean conflict. John married Frances V. Gallegos in 1950 and they had four children, Johnny Lee, Carla Gail, Richard Anthony, and Frank Joseph. John worked for ACF Industries, Boeing Aircraft, and retired from Bernalillo County State District Court. John was involved in community issues and an active member of his political party. John's love was genealogy research and dedicated his retirement years to researching his family history as well as volunteering for the NM Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico (NMHGRC), Home of the "Great New Mexico Pedigree Database". John is survived by his three children: Carla Perea and husband, Tom; Richard Pena and wife, Bette of Raleigh, NC; Frank Pena and wife, Karen; two granddaughters Bethany and Juliana Pena of Albuquerque, NM; sisters, Gloria Pena Lipps of Sun City, AZ; Marcia Pena Thompson of Melville, NY; Theresa Pena Greenman of Anaheim, CA, and Rosella Pena Trujillo of Albuquerque, NM; numerous nieces and nephews, and his long-time loyal canine companion, Nacho. John was preceded in death by his much loved grandparents, Ignacio V. Lujan and Regina L. Lujan; parents, Elighio Vincente (Lee) Pena and Maria Emelia (Emma) Pena; son, Johnny Lee; brothers, Charlie and Michael; half sister, Margaret Everling; and his beloved Karen Chavis. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2014, 3:00 p.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 2400 Southern Blvd SE, Rio Rancho. A reception will follow at The Rio Grande Gracious Retirement Living. Burial will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2014, 11:15 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. PETZOLD, VIVIAN H. Age 81, a resident of Torreon, NM passed away peacefully October 26, 2014 at her home, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert C. Petzold Sr.; children, Elizabeth and husband Johnny Lujan; Robert Petzold Jr. and wife Lupe; and Julie Lujan; grandchildren, MaryAnne and husband Paul Chavez, Holly and husband Shawn Henderson, Stephanie Lujan and husband Michael Crabb, Amanda Lujan, Christina and husband Brandon Adcock, April and husband Durward Lewis, Jeremy Lujan and Jerika Lujan and fiance Aaron Smythe; great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Elijha, Jonathon, Aryal, Nicholas, James Jr., Matthew, and Celina; and siblings, Lorie, Lina, Joaquin, Dahlia, Vicenta and Isabel. She was preceded in death by her parents Teodocio and Raquel Herrera and brother Frank Herrera. Vivian grew up in Torreon, NM before moving with her husband to Naperville, Illinois, where she lived for 25 years. In 1971, she returned to New Mexico to build a home with her three children near her parents and siblings. Vivian was the matriarch of a large, loving family who treasured her stories, creativity, vitality, keen fashion sense and advice for her worldly knowledge and experiences. She enjoyed sewing, beading and crafting, traveling, spending time with her family, and tending her rose gardens. She was a member of the Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Torreon. Pallbearers are: Jeremy Lujan, Shawn Henderson, Michael Crabb, Durward Lewis, Brandon Adcock, and Aaron Smythe. Honorary Pallbearers include all 8 great-grandchildren. MARTINEZ, RUMELIA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 with family by her side. She was born January 23, 1926. Rumelia was preceded in death by her parents Jose and Irene Pena; husband, Toribio; son, Dennis; six sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Martinez, Emily and husband Leroy Montoya, Amy and husband Joe Lovato; son, Anthony Martinez; sister, Dora Chavez; brother, Joe Pena; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; as well as many other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. Services will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 6440 Hwy 550 Cuba, NM on Saturday, October 18, 2014. Rosary will be recited at 11:30am. GARCIA, LAZARO In loving memory of Lazaro 'Larry' Garcia who went to be with the Lord on October 9, 2014 at 102 years of age. Lazaro, a lifelong resident of Mora, NM passed away peacefully in his home. Lazaro was preceded in death by his parents Maximiliano and Leonarda Garcia, wife Dolores 'Lola' Garcia, his daughter Annie Mondragon and a grandson Eugene Mondragon. Lazaro is survived by four children: Lala Martinez and husband E.J. of Santa Fe and their three children (David, Vincent, Anna), Grace Gonzales and husband Richard of Santa Fe and their three children (Richard, Steven, Dolores), Therese Maes and husband Arthur of Santa Fe and their two children (Brenda, Arthur Jr.), Larry Garcia and wife Irene of Mora and their two children (Phillip, Felisha), and Rudy Mondragon husband of the late Annie Mondragon and their three children (James, Joann, Eugene). He was a grandfather to 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Lazaro was born on April 17, 1912 in Ledoux, NM. Lazaro was one of the most widely known and respected elders in Mora County and surrounding areas. Lazaro served the community and the state of New Mexico in many capacities. He served as the Democratic chairman for Mora County for twelve years. The highlight of Lazaro's political career was being nominated and serving as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles in July of 1960. This was the convention that nominated John F. Kennedy. Lazaro served 12 years on the Mora San Miguel Electric Board. He also served on the Mora school Board for 21 years, many of those as chairman of the board. After working for the state of New Mexico for thirty years, Lazaro retired in 1979 at the age of 67. In 1991, Lazaro was elected into the New Mexico Democratic Hall of Fame. In his honor, in 1999, the middle school in Mora was named after him - "Lazaro (Larry) Garcia Middle School". Lazaro was dedicated to his family and friends. He was a man of great pride and dignity and believed in working hard to help his community. He has touched the lives of so many around New Mexico and will be missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held from 3-5pm on Monday at Nelson Funeral Home. Rosary services will be conducted on Monday at 7:00pm at St. Gertrudes Church in Mora. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Paul Grala, S.O.L.T., on Tuesday at 10:00am also at St. Gertrudes Church, with a burial to follow at the Mora Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Arthur Maes Jr., David Martinez, Phillip Garcia, Steven Gonzales, James Mondragon and George Trujillo. Honorary pallbearers are Tony Esquibel, John Espinoza, Moise Medina, Herman Lujan, Dwayne Martinez, C.B. Trujillo, Felix Archuleta, Benjie Trujillo, Augustine Garcia, Savino Garcia, Alfredo Nelson, John Sanchez, Pablo Sedillo, Laudente Quintana, Dr. Michael Lopez and Phillip Romero. SIERRA, KATHY L. Kathy L. Sierra, age, 59, passed away on October 3, 2014. She was preceded in death by her mother, Theresa Lujan. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Sierra; daughters, Angela Montoya, and husband Richard; Renee Valencia, and husband, Javier; five grandchildren, Victoria and Anthony Montoya, Javier Alejandro, Theresa, and Marcos Valencia. She is also survived by her father, Frank Lujan, and wife Lucy; brother, Joseph Lujan and wife May; niece Sarah Lujan; nephews Andrew and Lucas Lujan. LUJAN, ERNEST GILBERT Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Ernest Gilbert Lujan, 72, passed away on September 15, 2014 with his wife and children at his side. He was born on December 8, 1941 to Ernest J. Lujan and Rita Gilbert Lujan and raised in Belen. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Stella Armijo Lujan; his daughter Elicia Lujan, her husband David Sowar and their son Logan; and his son Luke Lujan, his wife Stacey Smith and their children Aiden and Alexis. He is also survived by sister Juliette Duran and her husband Leroy; brother Robert Lujan and his wife Sandy; sisters-in-law and their husbands Alvie and Tommy Torres and Michelle and Paul Lucero; and several nieces and nephews. Ernie was a graduate of the UNM College of Pharmacy, Class of '67. He worked in retail pharmacy for 30 years, mainly at the Eastdale location of a national chain. Ernie was the kind of guy who could fix anything or at least give it a good old college try. After his retirement, he became the family handyman. Ernie is also survived by his best friend Oswald (Oz) Baca and his wife Mary Ann. Oz was always available to help on any project or engage in any good argument (politics and religion excluded by mutual agreement). In addition to "fixing things," Ernie loved traveling. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful cities and beaches on four continents. But the greatest joy of Ernie's life was his family. His children were perfect and his grandchildren exceptional. He was good-hearted, loving and devoted and we will love and miss him forever. Thank you to our neighbor Shannon Lehman for caring and helping. Also, thank you to Dr. Carol Merovka and her staff at Hospice of the Sandias and the staff of Retreat at Home, especially Linda Griffin and Troy Fragua, for their compassionate care of Ernie.
