Nunn -- Earl Nunn, 86, a prominent New Mexico public schools educator, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2001. He was preceded in death by Cora Lea, his beloved wife of 63 years. Mr. Nunn was born February 7, 1915 in Gainesville, TX to John Ruby and Elizabeth Nunn. The family moved to Union County in northeastern New Mexico in 1917, where he was reared on a dry land farm with four older brothers, all of whom preceded him in death. Earl began his career in education at the age of 18 in a two-room school in the little village of Mansker, NM. Teaching in the winter and attending college in the summer, he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at New Mexico Highlands University and was awarded an honorary doctorate from New Mexico State University. He served as superintendent of schools in Folsom, Des Moines, Springer, Alamogordo and Las Cruces before retiring and becoming the first executive secretary of the New Mexico School Administrators¯ Administration. He was instrumental in the creation of the New Mexico education retirement system and advised governors and legislators on educational matters, including the state-wide implementation of the public school transportation system, the lunchroom program and free textbooks. After his retirement, he was actively involved with AARP and the Agency on Aging, serving on advisory boards with both organizations. During World War II, he was one of the 90-day wonders commissioned as a lieutenant j.g., in the US Navy. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions aboard the destroyer, the USS Mahan, sunk in Leyte Gulf in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Del Norte Baptist Church and the Gate City Lodge #11, A.F. & A.M. Mr. Nunn is survived by his daughter, Patsy Carmichael of Albuquerque and her children, Carlton and wife, Tiffani of Edgewood, Kevin and wife, Diane of Atlanta, GA and Kathy of Plantation, FL; his son, Robert of Albuquerque and his daughter-in-law and friend, Kathleen Nunn and their children, Reid and wife, Gretchen, Michelle and Tyler, all of Albuquerque; and four great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd., 1111 University Blvd. NE. Butler -- James Edward Butler, 58, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque died, Tuesday, February 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Dora Butler of the family home; daughter, Malinda Merry Ortega and husband, Peter of Los Lunas, NM; sons, Edward James Butler of Norfolk, VA, Paul Stephen Butler and wife, Kelly of Simla, CO and Joel Oren Butler of Albuquerque; grandchildren, April Marie Butler and James Edward Butler both of Simla, CO; brother, Frank Forrest and wife, Betty of Albuquerque; mother, Margery Butler; nine nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews. James shared his love for all around him, friends weren't just friends but became family. He considered it a privilege to serve the New Mexico State Police and the citizens of New Mexico for 25 years. He retired as Lieutenant and Commander of the New Mexico State Police Swat Team after which he was a general contractor & owner of Leaf-It-To-Us. He loved the Lord and his church family at Riverside & Springer Churches of Christ. Services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m. at Riverside Church of Christ, 3100 La Orilla Rd. Pierce -- Bruce John Pierce, 62, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 10, 2000. A resident of Albuquerque for 36 years, he is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Lisa and Matt Spangler, Brian Pierce, Valerie and Kevin Jameson, and Andrew Pierce. He is also survived by his seven grandsons, Zachary Spangler, Bruce Kristopher Jameson, Nathaniel Spangler, Drew Jameson, Paul Pierce, Benjamin Spangler and Stephen Pierce.; mother-in-law, Armella Woodward; sisters-in-law, Sister Elizabeth Woodward IHM, and Sandra Woodward and brother-in-law, Dr. William Woodward. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Sarah Pierce. Mr. Pierce was born in Westchester, PA on January 21, 1938. He attended school in Pottstown, PA, received a B.S. at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, earned an MBA Cum Laude at the University of Michigan. Mr. Pierce rose through the ranks at the first Bank of New Mexico and became the youngest CEO of a bank in the states history. In 1977, he formed his own entrepreneurial company and engaged in that endeavor until his death. Mr. Pierce was responsible for the Historic Restoration of the Old St. Joseph Hospital, the Springer building and the Rosenwald building, Albuquerque's first department store. He was on numerous boards in the community and served in the Army Reserves. Mr. Pierce considered his greatest achievement in life to be his Christian family. He enjoyed countless hours of ball playing, fishing, target shooting, exploring the outdoors and fellowship with friends and family. He is a treasure who will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2000, 2:00 p.m., at the St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1500 Chelwood Park NE.
