Geist -- Jacob D. (Jack) Geist, one of Colorado and New Mexico's vintage pioneers of telephone and telegraph, checked his last section of line, declared it good, said his good-byes and passed-on to a heavenly valley August 3, 2001. He was 94 years old. He died peacefully of age-related maladies at La Vida Llena Retirement Center in Albuquerque, NM, surrounded with the love and tender care of his immediate family and many friends. His life was both long and full. Jack's work life began at age 16 when he left his Ft. Collins, CO home with $30 in his pocket. He said he felt rich. He hired-on with the shipping department of Colorado Wholesale Drug Co. in Denver, CO. After 18 months he left to work for Western Union, building the Union Pacific telephone line that would run from Denver to El Paso, TX. Not long thereafter he met Jessie, his wife-to-be, who was living in a ¯teacherage¯ close to where he was constructing line near Arapaho, CO. Months later he changed jobs and began building telephone line for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph (later to be Mountain Bell) in eastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. He and Jessie were married not long thereafter on August 3, 1929. Locations they lived and worked include Raton, Springer, Clayton, Las Vegas, Taos, Albuquerque, Artesia, Estancia, Mountainair, and many more, some more than once. Jessie, his wife of 72 years, once said they moved 88 times in 25 years, but that wasn't all the moves, over the course of 42 years with Mountain States T&T. Jack did it all in telephone work , from telephone installation and line construction to telephone office management in Springer, Taos, and Las Vegas. Jessie even helped with operator duties at several work locations. Jack and his family moved to Albuquerque in 1954 where he ended his career within the Engineering Department, retiring in September 1971. His most cherished work years were those assigned to the Taos office. He loved the surrounding areas and the people of Taos. He was proud to have personally installed the first telephone at the Taos Pueblo. In early retirement years Jack maintained several downtown Albuquerque parking lots. Passers-by got a cheerful wave and big smile from under the broad-brimmed straw sombrero worn by this strong man, as he labored long hours in the sun with his heavy leather gloves and long-handled shovel. In later years he gave up the ¯Lots¯ and focused on his gardens and lawn. He and Jessie journeyed to some distant lands, but his favorite places of comfort were his home and nearby Fox Park in Albuquerque and visiting spots in Taos. Jack was born August 24, 1906 in Fort Collins, the last survivor of 12 siblings, son of Jacob and Katherine Margaret Hill Geist. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Kathleen Wadley Geist of Albuquerque; and three children, son, Jerry D. Geist and wife, Sharon of Albuquerque, NM, son, J. Michael Geist and wife, Charlotte of La Grande, OR, and daughter, Gretchen G. Shipley and husband, Bob of Albuquerque. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren who he loved very much and was always mindful of their well-being. Jack was a long-time and supporting member of the Bent Masonic Lodge in Taos, NM and the First United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. He helped with various programs within the church and devoted many hours locally to The Monday Grace Meal. Jack was a strong man who was diligent in all he did. The strength and enjoyment he gained from even the hardest of work performed, helped him battle like a warrior through a variety of life and health crises. But, even the best of warriors find there is a time to end the battle. He did it well and good. Memorial services will be held Monday, 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 314 Lead SW, with Dr. Ira Williams, Jr. officiating. Private interment will precede services. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Sunday, 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to The Monday Grace Meal, First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1638, 87103 or to La Vida Llena Employee Fund, 10501 Lagrima de Oro Rd. NE, 87111. French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
