Cassel -- Virginia Cunningham Cassel, 88, of Wichita, KS, author of "Juniata Valley", died Saturday, February 23, 2002. Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2002 at the Fairmount United Church of Christ at 16th and Fairmount. Raised in Lansdale, PA, Ms. Cassel was an artist, a novelist, and a civil servant with the US Office of Education bilingual and Indian education programs in Washington, DC. In her 40s, she was a social worker in New York City, moving to DC to teach in the pilot Head Start Program. She attended Goucher and Beaver Colleges, graduated from Case Western Reserve, and earned her MA from the University of New Mexico. Widely traveled, her first experience was in 1939 living in Geneva, Switzerland. Single most of her life, and drawn to Japanese Buddhism while living in Washington, DC, in her 60's she studied Greek and began writing novels. She retired to Albuquerque living in Four Hills, painting and teaching creative writing into her mid-80's eventually moving from the Grand Court of Albuquerque to Wichita, KS in May of 2001. Survivors include her children, Dr. Gretchen Cassel Eick of Wichita, KS and Dr. David Cassel of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Alyson (Eick) Shaw of Northampton, MA; Kendra Eick of Wichita, KS, Kristen and Erin Cassel of Nashville; great-grandchildren, Kara Eick and Ivan Bocobo of Wichita. Chavez -- Mrs. Oralia "LaLa" T. Chavez, 78, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away on March 12, 2002. Mrs. Chavez is survived by her sons, Gilbert Aragon and wife, Frances, Martin Aragon Jr., Frank Aragon, Richard Aragon and wife, Ramona and Alex Aragon. Mrs. Chavez is also survived by 28 grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Chavez; several nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her son, Ben E. Herrera; and her daughter, Stella Robledo. Mrs. Chavez was a member of the Catholic Church. Visitation will be Friday evening at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos N.W. at 7:30 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 8:00 p.m. A final viewing will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Father Joe Vigil. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Carlos Aragon, David Gallegos, Lawrence Trujeque, Cookie Taylor, George Gilliam Jr., and Paul Aragon. Pergola -- 1961-2002. Kenneth D. Pergola, 41, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away unexpectedly on March 9, 2002. Ken was a member of the Valencia Valley Church of the Nazarene. Ken had a passion for motorcycles, and was a motorcycle brother to many. Ken also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He is survived by his beloved wife, Victoria (Tody) of 13 years; his precious daughter, Jaclyn; and his friend and son, Stephen Medina and his wife, Jessica. He is also survived by his father, Joe Pergola and his wife, Jackie of California; his mother, Joanne Bridge and husband, Leo of Virginia; his brother, Carl and his wife, Christina of Albuquerque; his sister, Kendall and her husband, David of Virginia; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the Valencia Valley Church of the Nazarene located at 33 El Cerro Rd. in Los Lunas. On Friday, March 15, 2002 those who wish are invited to meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Valencia Valley Church of the Nazarene for a motorcycle procession to Mount Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque where graveside services will be held at 9:00 a.m. with full military honors. Romero -- Amado Romero, 83, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ofelia; and his children, Mark, James and wife, Doris Romero, Maria, Leonard, Helen and husband, Michael Johnsen, David, Patrick, Leo, Ann Margaret and husband, Mark Bieri, John and wife, Abigail Romero; his grandchildren, Thomas and David Facey, Aaron, Megan and Steven Romero, David and Jonathan Johnsen, Noah, Joshua and Adam Romero, and Katie Bieri; his sister, Vivian Sanchez; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Amado was a native of Albuquerque from the Old Town area. He was a highly-decorated WWII veteran, captured by the Japanese on Corregidor in 1941 and held captive until the end of the war. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He will be dearly missed by those of us that he left behind. Rosary will be recited Thursday, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos NW, with Helen Romero Johnsen reciting. Mass will be celebrated Friday, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, with Father Ramon Aragon, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas Facey, David Facey, Mark Bieri, Mike Johnsen, Fred Garcia and Richard Hoehne. Romero -- Ella Mae Romero, 93, a resident of Albuquerque for 53 years, was called home by the Lord on Monday, March 11, 2002. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Ahr and husband, Arthur, and Rosemary Montoya and husband, Roland all of Albuquerque; sons, Herman Romero and wife, Naomi, of Raleigh NC and Jon A. Romero of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and sister, Edith Forsling and husband, Vernon, of Sunnyvale, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Romero, son, Ernest Romero and grandson, Daniel Montoya. Mrs. Romero was born March 23, 1908 in Magdalena, NM to John and Rose Sullivan. She was an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society and Legion of Mary at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited Thursday, March 14, 2002, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE with Deacon Al McLane reciting. Mass will be celebrated Friday, March 15, 2002, 9:00 a.m., at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE, with Father Domingo Gumpal, Celebrant. Scott -- March 10, 2002. Frances W. Scott, our beloved mother, wife, grandmother and friend went to be with our Lord Jesus. Frances was born in Albuquerque on March 28, 1938 to Ernest and Babe Brown formally of Albuquerque now of Clovis, NM. She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter Brown. Frances leaves behind a husband, David Scott of Belen, NM; four sons, Daniel Denton and wife, Bobbie of Albuquerque, NM, James E Denton and AnnMarie Barry of Los Lunas NM, Dean D Denton and wife, Lisa of Owsso, Ok, David Lee (Boo) Scott and wife, Loretta of Belen, NM; and one daughter, Wanda Shiflett and husband, Bill of Stratford, OK. Frances leaves behind one sister, Darlene Howard and husband, Don of Clovis NM; and four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and friends whom will all miss her dearly. Frances loved the outdoors, her mule, Velvet, and she loved riding her 4-wheeler with her family and friends. She will be missed dearly and the comfort lies in that we will all see her again. A Service will be held in her honor on Friday March 15, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Casa Colorado Church south of Belen.

Alderete -- Edward H. Alderete, 41, a resident of Albuquerque passed away quietly in his home on Saturday, March 9, 2002. Edward is survived by his four children, Monica Velasquez and husband, Eugene, Edward Alderete Jr., David Daniel, his princess, Grace Hope; and his wife of 18 years, Jeannette. Edward is also survived by his mom, Barbara Romero; his dad, David Alderete and wife, Mary; his sister, Michelle Molina and her family; his brothers, Joseph Alderete and his children, Mario Alderete and his family; two God-daughters, Estella Alderete and Elaina Rodriquez his little sunshine; many loving and supportive aunts and uncles; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Edward will be remembered for his wonderful culinary talents and his love of music. Edward proudly served his country in the Army Reserves for six years. He also dedicated many years of his life to ministry through Victory Outreach. Edward's smile and love of his rottweilers will be missed. Play those congas in heaven. A viewing will be held Wednesday morning after 10:00 a.m. at Victory Outreach Church. 933 Sunset SW, with a Funeral Service to be held at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Dan Sanchez, of Partners for Jesus Ministry and Pastor Danny Sanchez, Victory Outreach Church, will officiate the service. Chavez -- Jose A. (Sharkie) Chavez, age 67, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend was welcomed into the arms of the Lord our Savior, Sunday, March 10, 2002, while surround by his loving family. He is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia; mother-in-law, Marie C de Baca; a son, Ray Chavez; daughters, Agnes Lovato, Diane Turano and husband, Vincent, Patricia Rizvi; step-daughters, Roberta Guzman and husband, Orlando, Celeste Miller and husband, Bill, Yvette Vargas and husband, Donald; 15 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters; brother, Tony J. Chavez and wife, Estella; sisters, Marie Maestas, Julie, Dolores and Jeanette; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Sharkie will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who knew and loved him. Jose retired from the Sandoval County; he was a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force; he served as City Councilman for the town of Bernalillo; he also worked for Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo, where he instructed the Altar Servers, taught CCD classes, he was a Eucharist Minister, the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #7633 of Bernalillo; a member of the 4th Degree Mandalor Council # 0682; he was past president of the Bernalillo Civitan Club. Jose was well known by many as Sharkie, he was a kind hearted man who always was willing to help others. Sharkie will always be remembered by his smile, and good sense of humor; he touched so many lives. Final viewing will be this morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian burial, which will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery. Casket bearers will be David Chavez, Jered Chavez, Johnny Chavez, Michael Turano, Orlando Guzman, and Bill Miller. Honorary bearers will be Richard Stange, Tivo Lovato, Joe B. Austin, the Knights of Columbus Council #7633, Fr. Mandalari, the 4th Degree Council #0682, Arthur Trujillo, and Leroy Trujillo. Military Honors will be accorded by the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter III. Gurule -- Mr. Henry Gurule died Friday, March 8, 2002 in Albuquerque at the age of 89. Mr. Gurule is survived by his children, Rudy Gurule and wife, Alice, Joe Gurule and wife, Jeanette, David Gurule, Herman Gurule, Charlie Gurule, Marcella Duran, Dolores Leon, Rose Gutierrez and Helen Maldonado; sister, Lele Wagner; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
