MATWIYOFF, NICHOLAS ALEXANDER August, 1937- February, 2015 Beloved husband and father, devoted grandfather and father-in-law, eminent scientist, superb raconteur and conversationalist, and good friend and colleague, Nick quietly passed at home on Saturday, February 21, 2015. His boyhood was spent in Rogers City, MI. He earned his BS in chemistry from Michigan Technological University in 1959 & received his MS/Ph.D. at University of Illinois, Champagne/ Urbana graduating in 1962. He and Janet Hogberg Matwiyoff married that same year and went to Stanford University, for a year of Post-Doctoral studies, then joined the Penn State chemistry faculty for five years, mentoring many graduate students and publishing widely in nuclear magnetic resonance and spectroscopy. Summers were spent consulting at Los Alamos National Labs and in 1968, he accepted a position at CNC division at LANL, eventually moving into life sciences for studies and applications for magnetic resonance. In those years he and his family lived in Santa Fe, making many friends there. He was asked by Gov. Bruce King's Science Advisor and innovator to help set up NM Centers for Technical Excellence around the state. He was most influential in establishing the UNM Medical School's Center for Non-invasive Diagnosis in 1981 (now The Mind Research Network) using one of the earliest and largest magnets for what would become known as MRI for research and medical application. He encouraged interdisciplinary studies among medical and basic science departments nationally and internationally and created the earliest short courses and materials in how MRI could be interpreted and used for patients. At the same time, he represented the United States several times at IAEA special meetings in Vienna and Leipzig for cooperation in using stable isotopes in agricultural endeavors, Leipzig afforded many hair-raising experiences for a man of Russian origins behind the Iron Curtain! Among positions held at UNM were CNID Director, Deputy Director of the earliest Cancer Center under Tom Tomasi, MD, and later Chair of Cell Biology. His last professional decade was spent as a neuroscientist, chairing the National Institutes of Mental Health's Neuroscience Committee. In his years since retirement, he has been a voracious student of world economy and finance and how politics shapes those institutions. Nick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet, his son Gregory N. Matwiyoff, MD. Commander, Medical Corps, US Navy, daughter-in-law, Shannon Matwiyoff, the lights of his life grandchildren, Cassidy and Nicholas, all of San Diego; the cousins he was raised with as a brother, Yuldine Bellmore, of Rogers City, Delphine Budreau (Frank) of Kennebunk, ME, Delbert Jachcik of Detroit; and his brother-in-law, David K. Hogberg Ph.D. (Patricia) of Marshall, MI. He and Janet were blessed with the steady care and support of George Comerci, MD, friend and colleague, Walter Forman, MD, care givers for many months Barbara and Christy, and in his last months, Alliance Hospice nurses, Tammy and Denise and other Alliance staff. Cremation has taken place, and family, oldest friends and colleagues will attend a private Remembrance Gathering in the family home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Nicholas Matwiyoff Endowed Scholarship, and mailed to: Office of Development/ Michigan Tech Fund, c/o Eric Halonen, 1400 Townsend Dr., Houghton, MI 49931-1295, or to a charity of your choice. RUST, KATHERINE HEFFERNAN Katherine, born January 13, 1928, died on March 1, 2015 following a full life. A devoted mother, friend of nature, animals and the arts with a passion for travel. She'd imagine her best day starts with a walk on the beach, searching for seashells, later swimming in the ocean then surrounding her day with music, reading a good book, sharing scrumptious food and conversation with family and friends. Her motto 'to give back' was learned from her now deceased parents, Amy Burgess and Ralph J Heffernan, while growing up in Bloomington, Illinois - same town as her ex-late husband - John (Jack) Laurence Rust. They married June, 1949 later divorcing 1968, but in-between five children were born (2nd child, Catherine Hollis Rust, died following childbirth). Surviving four are Julia Bowdich (Ray, deceased), Jane Janke (Bill), Amy Donohue (Jim), and John Rust (Jamie); blessed with grandchildren Glenn Janke, Jodie J Maguire (Michael), Erin D Stephens (Adam), Tom Donohue, John Donohue, Kelsey Rust and Taryon Zeleny; plus great- grandchildren: Mikey Maguire, Paxton Stephens, Avery Stephens, Steel Rust and Skylar Rust. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Justin D. Rust, and her sisters Ruthmary Crawford (John), Ann Spierling (Robert), plus her brother John Heffernan (Patti.) Katherine (Katie) adored life, following her passions across the globe; joining the efforts of Jane Goodall, the Orangutans Research and Conservation Project, The Leakey Foundation and the School of American Research, Sir Edmund Hillary's with the Sherpas, Dalai Lama, and the Tibetan people. In 1971 she spoke on the Congressional Floor alongside the Taos Indian Pueblo Governor and Council in their successful efforts when asking the US Government for protection in perpetuity of sacred lands at Blue Lake. A benefactor to Native American Indian students, she'd sponsor their work, encouraging them to pursue their passions as a career. In August 1968, she was a 'Judge' at both the 47th Annual Indian Market and the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM She had a gift for fundraising, in the early '60's she helped the United Way, and later the Santa Fe Opera following a destructive fire. She was deeply touched when Project Share attached her nameplate permanently on a closet in appreciation for her help, showing up weekly year after year. She served on the Board of Directors at The Santa Fe Opera, and in 1996 as an Honorary Director on the Board at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), served on the Board of Trustees at both The Wheelwright Museum as well as The Millicent Rogers Museum in 1986+1987 and the Albuquerque Historical Society. At her request, no service will be held. As a memorial to Katherine, please extend an act of kindness to someone in need and spread the same kind of love and joy that she provided to so many. We'll miss you and thank you for your lessons, laughter and love.

She attended the University of Colorado in Boulder Colorado, attaining a degree in elementary education. In later years, after her children were older, she received her Master's Degree at New Mexico State University and was only a few units short of earning her PhD. She and George were married for 32 years, and after his retirement the two of them traveled extensively in their RV. Part of an extensive RV community, they traveled to all 50 states and most Canadian provinces and always had a great sense of wonder at all the beauty they found as they traveled. She was an accomplished birder and enjoyed many types of card games, including bridge. Her thirst for knowledge continued all her life and she kept herself current on many things, from current events to health and nutrition. LYLE, DANNY JOE Danny Joe Lyle, beloved son, husband and father, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at the age of 63, after a 14 year journey with younger-onset Alzheimer's. He was born in Albuquerque, NM, on September 4, 1951, to Tom and Janet Lyle, the second son of seven children. A Catholic from birth, Danny Joe's life was guided by his enduring faith in a loving God and his unwavering belief that a measure of a man's soul was his love for his family and for those he served. After graduating from St. Pius High School, Danny Joe continued his education at NMSU in Las Cruces, NM, where he received a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in economics. While in Las Cruces, Danny Joe met & married the love of his life, Linda. They had 3 precious sons: Jeremiah, Ryan and Stephen who were his light and joy. Danny Joe's life's work was public education business and he served as the chief school business officer of Farmington Public Schools, Las Cruces Public Schools, Albuquerque Public Schools and Bernalillo Public Schools. In 1996, he became the Director of the NM Educational Retirement Board and, in that capacity, a lobbyist in Santa Fe for education issues. Danny Joe was passionate about education in New Mexico; his framework always included "Our children are the most important thing we will ever do with our lives. They are our future and the decisions we make today will change the world for our children tomorrow." Danny Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Janet; his daughter, Rebekkah; and his grand-son, Daniel. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda; his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeremiah and Jennifer Lyle (Alb), Ryan and Beth Lyle (Alb) Stephen and Kathryn Lyle (Alb); his father, Tom Lyle (Jemez, NM); his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Thom and Linda Lyle (Placitas, NM), Steve Lyle (Farmington, NM), Peter and Christine Lyle (Bernalillo, NM), Jana and Paul Ortiz Pino (Rio Rancho, NM), Julie and Tony Pino (Alb); Rebecca Lyle and John Hartigan (Austin, TX); and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. Danny Joe defined 'family' very broadly and through the years, many precious friends became part of the Lyle family story. As his family loved and supported him in his life's journey with Alzheimer's, it became obvious that the circle of family was indeed a village. Our family is so grateful to the care giving team of North Ridge Alzheimer's Special Care Center who became part of our family for the past three years and who loved DJ as their own; to Dr. Jeff Miller who met every need of DJ as well as his family; to Heritage Hospice (Matt, Wendy, Jamie and Jessica) who tenderly cared for all of us; to those who have prayed for us every day; and to our New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired family who, individually and collectively have been the spiritual and emotional rock that have grounded us in this journey. Danny Joe was a life-long learner who believed everyone should have the opportunity to grow in their chosen field. In the years our family has lived with the challenges of younger onset Alzheimer's, we have recognized the desperate need for well-trained people in the field of memory care. In tribute to DJ's valiant journey, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to CNM Foundation, 525 Buena Vista Dr. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106, or at www.cnm.edu/donate to support scholarships for certified nursing assistants interested in memory care. A Liturgy of Resurrection will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015, at St. John XXIII Catholic Community, 4831 Tramway Ridge Dr. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at a later date.
