MARTINEZ, ROBERT J. Age 76, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend died on Friday, May 16, 2014 after a three year battle with prostate cancer. He was born in San Acacio, CO on February 17, 1938, to Tobias and Rebecca Valdez Martinez. Robert was raised in La Jara, CO in the beautiful San Luis Valley surrounded by loving Valdez and Martinez relatives. Growing up on a farm, he learned the value of hard work and the simple things in life: swimming holes, a pick-up basketball game, and a good potato fight when all else failed. He attended Adams State College where he received a B.S. in Biology and a Masters in Counseling. In between the two, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army stationed in Seattle, WA. Having endured his share of cold weather, he moved to Socorro, NM - a special community he would call home until the end of his life. It was here that he met his wife, Alice, and raised his four children. He was a great Dad - reading to his children every day before school, spending his summers camping with them and remained the first person they called when they needed advice. A dedicated educator, Robert worked as a guidance counselor for 41 years where he embraced the opportunity to influence the lives and character of the thousands of students that matriculated under his watch. He believed in the importance of education and always ensured that academic excellence was recognized and celebrated. He was an avid tennis player and could be seen on the courts most afternoons, often accompanied by one of his faithful dogs. He was a devout Catholic, a life-long Democrat, a lover of animals, and a voracious reader. With a joy for life, he was a man with a great sense of humor and always extended compassion, kindness and respect to everyone he met. Robert was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Alice Chavez Martinez; his children, Patrick, Elaine, Steven, and Roger (Jeanette); his grandchildren, Sienna, Garrett, Roman and Gemma; his brother, Arthur (Luisa) Martinez; and his sister, Rosina Lucero. He was the calm in our storm and will be greatly missed. A Rosary to be recited on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 7:00 pm at San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro. TAYLOR, PHILIP K. of Noblesville, IN, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on May 18, 2014 just one month after his diagnosis with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Born February 7, 1953 in Vincennes, IN to Leland and Mida Taylor, Phil had a passion for life that was driven by his ever-present thirst for knowledge and an unmatched devotion to his family, his friends, and even those he did not know but hoped to help. Phil cherished fond memories of his time in Bloomington, IN where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies from Indiana University in 1974. Phil then studied at Vincennes University to become a Registered Nurse, the profession through which he would meet the love of his life, Karen Kender. Karen and Phil were married in 1978 and became proud parents of Amber in 1982 and Marla in 1984. As an adoring husband and doting father, he brought endless joy, love, and laughter to his family. When Karen suddenly lost her life in 1996, Phil quickly filled the role of both parents, lovingly raising the girls to become strong, smart, and caring adults, just like their mom and dad. While serving as a psychiatric nurse, he was beloved by his patients and colleagues for his patience, positive attitude, and devoted care. More recently, as a clinical consultant, Phil touched the lives of new friends and colleagues throughout the country where he shared his passion for teaching, solving problems, and learning from others. As he did throughout every challenge in life, Phil maintained his strength, positive attitude, and devotion to his family throughout his last month with us. His warmth, intelligence, and humor will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue through the unforgettable memories he gave us all. He is survived by his brothers, Elliott Taylor and Bruce Taylor; his daughters Amber Kemper (husband Michael Kemper) and Marla Taylor (husband Alex Tachtiris); and his granddaughters Hallie and Zoey Kemper, both of whom brought him such joy. A celebration of Phil's life will be held at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center at Hamilton Memorial Park (www.flannerbuchanan.com), 4180 Westfield Road, Noblesville, IN on May 22, 2014. The visitation will be held at 12pm, an honorary service will begin at 2pm, and a private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, the Taylor family requests for remembrances to be made through donations in honor of Phil to one of his charities of choice: Futures for Children (www.futuresforchildren.org) or WFYI (www.wfyi.org).
