He was preceded in death by his parents; son Buddy; and several aunts and uncles in Texas. He was particularly fond of his uncle John T. The passing of his mother in 2005 was very difficult for him. Though born in Houston, he came to Albuquerque as a young boy, and remembered riding his bike with his friends from his home in the southeast heights to Tingley Beach and all over the city. An accomplished swimmer, he was a lifeguard in city pools as a teenager. He loved the ocean, particularly the Texas Gulf coast and lived for a time in Rockport, Texas, on the water. He was also a pilot and loved to fly, until the loss of sight in one eye prevented him from continuing. He often flew to Mexico and South America and had a deep love for that part of the world. Sitting on the wall around the airport with him and watching the planes take off and land is a fond memory. We also remember his love of reading and learning, his deep interest in politics and world affairs, and his skill at telling stories and making people laugh. He always had a soft heart for the underdog. No services are planned. If you would like, please make a donation in his honor to Partners in Health, or the Ocean Conservancy.

CHARTIER -- RALPH CLAYTON Age 93, died peacefully on April 12, 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At his request no service was held. Mr. Chartier was born June 8, 1918 in Ames, Kansas to Edna (Regnier) and Ralph Chartier. Clayton was an artistic and creative individual whose lifelong accomplishments were many and varied. At age twelve he set a goal to become a musician and began this pursuit by teaching himself to play wind instruments. He first used his musical skills performing locally, later traveling with a carnival. To support himself he played with dance bands during the Big Band era while working toward a bachelor's degree in music from Kansas State University. Mr. Chartier furthered his education completing two masters' degrees, one in foreign language and one in music. While serving in the United States Army during WWII as a translator, telegraph operator and band member, he also completed flight school. In 1952, Mr. Chartier moved to New Mexico with his wife at the time (later divorced) to teach French, English and music for Albuquerque Public Schools. He retired from the Albuquerque Public School system after 30+ years as a high school and finally middle school teacher. He established Chartier Double Reed Co. in 1953. The company still thrives today with all three of his children currently involved in some capacity. In addition to running the double reed company which he designed, founded and developed, his early years in New Mexico included playing in and conducting local orchestras. Though he always preferred work to hobbies, he enjoyed gardening, furniture making, wine making and perpetually tinkering with ideas and prototypes for new reed making machines. He was an optimistic and content retiree, living out his retirement years exactly as he pleased--reading Western novels, puttering around his workshop and working in the reed factory daily until two months before his death. He is survived by his three children; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
