MAZON -- RENEE D. died on May 18, 2012, at the age of 83. Renee was born on February 24, 1929, in Brooklyn, NY, the only child of Sally Holzer and Irving Birnbaum. She married young, and at 21 had twins - Patty and Bob. Patty died in 1972 after suffering an acute asthma attack. Bob is a disabled Vietnam veteran and photojournalist living in New York State. Renee lived in Los Angeles and Cincinnati when her children were young. She returned to NY in 1963 because she missed the culture. She was proud to be the second woman to receive a hack license in NY. She gave up driving a cab when she was forced at knife-point to be the get-away driver after a robbery. She became personnel counselor at Saks Fifth Avenue, from which she retired in 1980. After moving back to the west coast, she worked for the County of San Diego. And at the age of 71, she worked for the Census Bureau in 2000 in Albuquerque. Renee was also an artist. She created leather on burlap collages for the Greenwich Village Art Show. Later she made unique jewelry for her own company, "Jewels of Our Earth." After her divorce, Renee became very active in the Gay Liberation and Women's Rights Movements. She was an early member of the New York chapter of Daughters of Bilitis. She also enjoyed travelling - she was a member of a Quaker Peace Team that visited the Soviet Union shortly after the USSR opened to visitors. In 1994, Renee moved to La Vida Llena Retirement Community in Albuquerque. Here, she found another calling: she wrote articles for the website GantsehMegilla.com - an online journal of Yiddish culture and expression. Along with other La Vida Llena residents, she answered letters for the ElderWisdomCircle.org - an online service where seniors use their insights and experience to give advice. Renee called it a win-win: "We can feel like we're still useful and it gives younger people an objective grandparent they can go to."
