MITCHELL -- E. JOY CROOKS "Grammie" age 83, entered the arms of Jesus Sunday afternoon. She leaves behind her son, Mike and wife Debbie; granddaughter, Christie Black and husband, Ryan; grandsons, Erik and wife, Alana, Bradley, Karl and wife, Casey, and Kirk; daughter-in-law, Stephanie; brother, Harold Crooks and wife, Joyce; sisters-in-law, Mary Joyce and Kathleen; numerous nieces and nephews; and scores of friends from church, golfing, bicycling and bridge. She was preceded in death by her son, David; her parents, Harry and Flossie; brothers, Howard and Vernon; and sister, Ruby May; and brother-in-law J.F. Joy/Grammie loved her church, family, biking, golfing, bridge playing, and gardening in her backyard. She called herself a "tough old Texas gal." Joy was born near May, Oklahoma, but the family moved to the panhandle of Texas before she was three, when Pop bought a half section of land near Spearman, Texas. She told stories of listening to programs on the radio, living through the Dust Bowl, herding sheep, plowing corners "neater than anyone," stacking feed, having three brothers in the service during World War II, milking cows, driving a tractor, and hauling grain to the elevator. After graduation, Joy attended West Texas State Teacher's College (now West Texas A & M) in Canyon, Texas. She didn't quite complete her college education because she married Donald Mitchell. They welcomed two sons, Mike and David, and lived in Amarillo, La Junta, Colorado, back to Amarillo, before moving west to the big city of Albuquerque in 1966. After six years or so on the eastside of town, they moved to Paradise Hills, which was the edge of the boonies back then. They both were active golfers and bridge players, among other things. Joy's accomplishments on the golf course included two holes in one, of which she was proud. Mike and David decided Joy needed something else to do and introduced her to skiing, at which she became adept, too. Following her retirement after 20 years with APS, Joy started traveling the world, eventually making it to nearly 30 countries, besides going throughout the US. Many of those trips were bicycling tours, and she truly enjoyed that. But nothing was more of a pride and joy to her than her family; she was thrilled when she became a grandma when Christie was born in 1983, and equally thrilled with the arrival of each grandson over the next 11 years. Grammie took each of her grandkids on at least one special trip, and those memories are very precious to them. Grammie was looking forward to becoming a great-grandma this December, as she excitedly anticipated Christie and Ryan's baby. She'll be watching over that little one from her special perch in heaven. A viewing for Joy Mitchell will be held at French, Westside location, 9300 Golf Course Rd NW, from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. The service will be held at Paradise Hills United Methodist Church, on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Paradise Hills UMC, 4700 Paradise Blvd NW, 87114, Cal Farley's Boys Ranch & Girls Town, PO Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174, or the charity of your choice.
