SORENSON -- JAY BERTRAM Age 82, a resident of Albuquerque, NM since 1970, died peacefully at home with his family present on Monday, August 15, 2011. Jay was born in 1929 in Manhattan, to parents Gene and Sarah Sorenson, both seasoned labor organizers. He grew up in Greenwich Village, steeped in the culture of unions, rallies, and all-night sessions of political discourse. After a time, the family moved to Perry St. and Jay attended Seward Park High School, along with notables such as Lucky Luciano. He earned a PhD in political science from Columbia University, with a concentration in Soviet studies. He was among the first group of Americans to visit the Soviet Union after the Stalin era. Following his graduation he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study the full employment policies in Norway. Girlfriend Mary Louise Ellis refused to let him leave a bachelor, and the two soon married and set sail for Europe. Returning from Norway in 1960, he accepted a teaching position at Princeton University in 1960, and in 1963, he moved to Smith College in Northampton, MA. In 1969 he published Life and Death of Soviet Trade Unionism. Albuquerque quickly became his adopted home in 1970, when he accepted a full professorship in the Political Science department at UNM. Jay's knowledge of foreign affairs and the Soviet Union led to an expert level understanding of weapons programs and his appointment to be an advisor to Senator Pete Domenici on the SALT agreements. His interest turned to the impact of nuclear weapons development on the environment and ground water. He was on the Sierra Club's Sum Zero Waste Committee in the 1990s Sierra Club to address nuclear waste issues, an effort to establish a 100% waste free production process for goods and services. In 1975 the Sorenson family went on a raft trip on the Taos box - an event that would change his life - he became an avid river rat and an activist for legal protection of wilderness areas and rivers. Jay took up a leadership role in the Chama River Trust resulting in the designation of the Chama River as Wild and Scenic in the 1978 Wilderness act "Jay was a political activist and a visionary conservationist. He was a Gary Hart delegate to the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco. He was at the forefront of the creation of the Elena Gallegos Open Space for the City of Albuquerque in 19?? Jay and his wife, Mary Lou, worked with me at the legislature to help get state funding to match the federal funds for the Petroglyph National Park. Jay loved the New Mexico land and our rivers and he helped to preserve and protect both." former NM State Senator Pauline Eisenstadt. Jay was often ahead of his time on environmental issues, including global warming. Way back in 1989, he and an engineer friend presented a paper entitled "World Wide Solar Power Satellite System (WWSPSS) to Reduce Carbon Dioxide; Do You Know a Better Way?" This was presented at the Conference on Technology Sharing to Reduce International Tensions sponsored by Los Alamos National Labs. Back then it was quite unusual for political scientists to participate in meetings on technical subjects. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Louise Sorenson; children Vivian Sorenson and husband Gary Meister, of New York City; and Eugene Sorenson and wife Andree Sanders, of New York City; and grandchildren Campbell Jay Sorenson, Louisa Sorenson and Zoe Meister. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 21st, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., at UNM Chapel, with Rabbi Min Kantrowitz officiating. THOMPSON -- NICK On Monday, August 15, 2011 our family lost one of its most precious members, Nick Thompson or to those who knew him well, Pickle. His parents, Lori and Marty, his brother David, cousins Matt, Tina, Jesse, Sarah, Danny, Madison and Chloe, grandparents Adele Thompson and Bill Huckabay, and Danny and Dovie Thompson, aunts and uncles, Bobby and Jimmie Thompson, Cathi Richardson, Rob and Belinda Richardson, Brandon and Stephanie Rickerman, and Vicki Richardson, many great-aunts and great-uncles and many, many friends are reeling with grief and unanswerable questions. Now our sadness is too profound and deep to put into words. While he has left us here on Earth unable to fathom his terrible absence, someday we will be able to think of Pickle with smiles. He will come to the edge of our thoughts unbidden. We will catch a glimpse of him in the corner of our eye at birthdays, while sitting on the porch on a warm summer evening or in the crowd of a car show, and these glimpses will comfort us in our grief. Pickle is a presence so ingrained in our hearts and minds that he will never truly be gone, just out of our touch, impossible to touch for but a short while until we meet him again in heaven. Pickle was just beginning his senior year at Bosque School where he was a member of the varsity soccer team for the past three years. Pickle had true passion for the game of soccer, which he has played since the age of five. He played AYSO Soccer from age five to eleven, when he then became a member of the AYSO Atlas Challenge under the coaching of Jerry Duran. This team became a second family to Nick, where Jerry was a great mentor and the other team members were like brothers. Pickle was a truly amazing young man that deeply touched every person he came in contact with, whether they were two months old to 80 years old. He was one of those magical people that brought you into the warmth of his heart and made you feel like you were so very special. When he wrapped you in his arms for a special "Pickle" hug you knew it came from the very depth of his heart. He was such a caring and loving person. His sense of humor could brighten even the cloudiest day. He loved nothing more than to make people laugh and was always "cutting up", either with a silly little dance or a really off the wall comment, or some fanciful story he would make up just to see you smile. Pickle made many friends in his short time with us, and was a true friend to all. You knew if he was your friend, he "had your back". We lost a true treasure with Pickle's passing and our world will never be the same. We miss you so very, very much and can't wait to wrap you in our arms when we meet again. Friends may visit French - Wyoming Chapel Friday, August 19, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Services will be held Saturday, August 20, 2011, 10:00 a.m., at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bosque School, 4000 Learning Rd., Albuquerque, NM 87120.
