CARTER -- CLIFFORD EUGENE Passed away on May 25, 2011 in Louisville, Colorado, after many years with Parkinson's disease. He was 86. Clifford Eugene Carter was born May 7, 1925 in McLeansboro, a small town in Southern Illinois, and grew up in nearby Springerton. The youngest of 10 children, his older siblings (Mary Ellen, Pauline, Maggie, Willard, Curtis, Clyde, Olla, Dale and Earl) helped their father, George, raise Cliff following the death of his mother, Stella Reister Carter, when he was fourteen years old. He grew up in Depression-era poverty, and his first pair of new shoes (not hand-me-downs) were the boots he received when he joined the Army in 1943. He served in combat with the 141st Field Artillery Battalion in Italy, France and Germany as a gun crewman for 155mm howitzers, and earned three overseas service bars, four bronze battle stars, a bronze arrowhead and a distinguished unit badge. He was the first person in his family to attend college when the GI Bill enabled him to enroll at Eastern Illinois University. After graduating in 1950, he taught mathematics at Enfield Community High School and then mathematics and radio communications at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois. He married Marjorie Lee Waller of Washington, Indiana, in Indianapolis on May 10, 1952. They met at Eastern Illinois University when Marjories ham radio club toured the Physics Lab where Cliff was working as a student assistant. In 1954 Cliff started work at the University of Illinois in Urbana, where he became involved in the computing project called Illiac I (Illinois Automated Computer), one of the worlds first supercomputers. This pioneering computer was built in the basement of the Physics Building, using vacuum tubes, and was physically enormous by todays standards. In the 1960's, Cliff Carter became a design engineer and chief administrator for the next generation of supercomputers, the Illiac II at the newly-constructed Digital Computer Laboratory at the University of Illinois. In the 1970's, he joined the Computing Services Office and eventually became an Assistant Director at the CSO. At the CSO, Cliff worked on pathbreaking projects, including building the Universitys computer network and computerizing the card catalog of the University of Illinois library the third largest university library in the country and making it remotely available. As part of his work, Cliff helped connect University of Illinois researchers to Arpanet, the precursor to today's internet. He was hard-working but always had time for a smile, sharing a joke or telling a story with his family, neighbors and friends. He was generous too, for several years driving high school students to the Appalachian Mountains to help donate clothes and building supplies to those less fortunate. Summer road trips and camping with his family were some of his favorite activities, and they explored together nearly all of the US and many parts of Canada. His other interests included reading, golfing, bowling, fishing and gardening. Cliff retired after 30 years at the U of I, and in 1985 he and Marjorie, a long-time special education teacher in the Urbana school system, moved to Albuquerque, where Cliff became a master gardener specializing in fruit trees and irises. They moved to the Boulder area in 2007. Cliff is survived by his wife Marjorie, his three daughters, Carolyn (Carrie) Paris of London, Chris Fluri of Missoula, Montana, and Cyndi Baird of Louisville, Colorado, and eight grandchildren. Donations in his honor should be made to your local charity, [the American Parkinson Disease Association (www.apdaparkinson.org), National Parkinson Foundation (www.parkinson.org) or the Computer History Museum (www.computerhistory.org)].

GEE -- ANNABELLE Ann was born on January 13, 1935, in Jasper County, Illinois. She lived a full life blessed by her husband, Frank; four children: Rodney, Gale, Jeanetta, and Heath; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Ann was known as an independently minded woman who was always ready to support family in their times of need. When she first moved to Albuquerque, she fought for her children, teaching them persistence and the importance of maintaining their dignity. While raising her family, Ann was a gourmet cook and excellent seamstress; she could make a prom dress out of a feed sack. Determined and creative, Ann taught herself to re-cover her own furniture and decorate her house with an expert's eye. With her husband Frank, Ann was an owner of MCC, Inc., an underground construction company that worked throughout New Mexico. As a businesswoman, Ann had a keen sense for investment and the administration of the companies she owned. Ann was a forward-thinking woman, and as she succeeded in business, she created scholarship funds for her grandchildren. She cared deeply about the education of her grandchildren, and her investment in them resulted in a generation of undergraduate and advanced degrees. Passionate about travel, Ann also inspired the adventures of many others as she and Frank journeyed throughout North America and Europe. Ann will be remembered not just for her fiery red hair but for the love and smiles that surrounded her when she passed. She will be missed. Frank and Ann ask that any friends or family members wishing to make a donation in Ann's name consider the New Mexico Cancer Center or Presbyterian Hospice.
