MCDOUGALL -- William R. McDougall (83) died July 11, 2010. He is survived by his wife Joan, to whom he was happily married for seven years - not bad out of 53 years. Their vows to each other were that if she died first she would leave him her liver; and should he die first he would leave her his brain. Also survived by their daughter Gretchen, son-in-law Kerrie Holley and grandsons, Kier and Hugo, all of Montara CA; brother John McDougall and wife Jan of Las Cruces. He was predeceased by son Doug McDougall in 1987. Bill McDougall was a carpenter by trade, and then became a construction manager of many large projects such as schools, commercial buildings, and apartment complexes. In 1964 he built our own very sturdy and fairly unique, child friendly, north valley adobe home. He could repair anything and build practically anything, recycling materials and architectural hardware accumulated over the years. He was always interested in old woodworking tools, and his collecting began as a hobby in about 1974. Over the years he collected over 2,000 tools, benches, boxes, foot operated lathe, polishing and drilling machines. He gradually collected old tools of many trades. There were no tools in his collection for which he could not describe the evolution and use. A photo of him and his tools appeared in the Feb.1991 issue of Smithsonian magazine. Bill became a member of seven of the many tool collecting groups in the U.S. Twice a year he went to tool auctions in Great Britain (17 trips). The tool collecting torch will be carried by his good friends David and Connie Fessler and Gregor Mszar. He enjoyed knowing George and Pat Fraser and many great trainers, instructors and new friends at Fifty 'n Fit where he worked out three times a week for seven years. He was a humanist. He donated his remains to UNM Medical School after which he will be cremated, and there will be no services. The end was rocky, and then peaceful with the skilled and compassionate care of AmberCare Hospice and Loretta Medina and Ron Archibeque of Comfort Keepers.
