ANAGNOSTOU -- Jean Markowitz Anagnostou went home to be with our Lord on Friday, July 31, 2009. Jean was born on Wednesday, June 13, 1956 in White Plains, NY. She moved to Albuquerque in 1979 where she met her best friend and now her husband for the past six years. Jean is survived by her husband, Spiro Anagnostou of the family home; sister, Betty Ann Dowless of Albuquerque; brother, John Markowitz and wife, Margo of New York; nieces and nephews, Kathleen, Kimberly, Katie, James and Johnny; father and mother-in-law, John and Kiki Anagnostou; sisters-in-law, Tasia and Kathy of Greece and Kalliopi of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Betty Markowitz. Jean will be deeply missed and her memory will be greatly cherished. ANDREWS -- Helen Long Bigham Andrews passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009, after an accident at her residence. She was 85. Helen Andrews was born November 28, 1923, in the rural town of Westminster in Rutherford County, North Carolina, to Ima Long and Fred Miller Bigham. She graduated from Limestone College of Gaffney, SC, in 1944. She married William Edward Andrews of Shelby, NC, in April of 1946, and moved to Albuquerque, NM, that year. They were married 60 years until his death in 2003. Mrs. Andrews taught history at Monroe Junior High and was a guidance counselor with APS at Kennedy-Tomascita for a total of 36 years. Mrs. Andrews established Andrews Pueblo Pottery in 1974, an Old Town mainstay to this day. She is survived by her daughter Susan Joseph and son-in-law Samuel John Joseph III of Richmond, VA, and son Robert F. Andrews and daughter-in-law Anita M. Andrews of Albuquerque, NM; and grandsons Christopher John Joseph and Robert F. Andrews Jr., and granddaughters Amy Andrews Joseph and Sarah Elizabeth California Andrews. She was preceded in death by her son Joseph Rex Andrews. Mrs. Andrews will be buried at Brittian Presbyterian Church, established by both her grandfathers in 1768 in Rutherford County, NC. A private family service will be held there.

BARNES -- Sandra Joanne Barnes' struggle with cancer ended at home on July 24, 2009. She was surrounded by her family. Sandra was born on October 26, 1947, to Paul and Marilou Barnes. She was a lifetime Albuquerque resident and is survived by her husband, Edward Graham, her mother, Marilou Barnes, her sisters, Emilou Barnes and Paula Barnes-Felfeli and their families. Sandra was cherished by those who knew her and she shared her love of life in countless ways with her wide circle of friends. Her family is heartbroken over her passing but is comforted knowing that she is at peace, encircled in God's abiding love. A Memorial Service celebrating Sandra's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, 314 Lead Avenue SW, with a reception following. CARNES -- Cynthia Carnes, 67, of Corrales, NM passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Cindy was born on March 16, 1942 to Sam and Charlotte Bolin Carnes in Victoria, Texas. An artist her entire life, she enjoyed traveling the world with her friends and family, capturing the different landscapes and perspectives, but her true passion was the Southwest. Her greatest true loves were her family and her beloved animals. Cindy was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Charlotte Carnes. She is survived by three children, Jim Wall, Jr. and wife Chandra of Rio Rancho, NM, Suzy Wilcox and her husband Chase of Kansas City, KS, and Charlotte Smith and her husband Doug of Corrales, NM; three grandchildren, Christopher and Amanda Wall of Rio Rancho, NM, and Addison Smith of Corrales, NM; brother, Sam Carnes and wife Nancy of Knoxville, TN; niece, Cynthia Carnes of Knoxville, TN; and her former husband, Jim Wall, Sr.; as well as her animals, Scatter, Precious, Charlie, Ping, Winston, and Oscar. CHAVIRA -- Willie Chavira, born June 16, 1935, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2009 surrounded by his family. Willie was well-known in the Barelas area, having been employed for 30 years at the Barelas Community Center. He was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Elisa Chavira and brothers Ralph and Herman (Kino). He is survived by sisters Mary Louise Chavira of the family home, Carmen Nunez and husband Pablo, Lucy Martinez and husband Tony of San Diego, Dolores Cortez and husband Manuel of Carlsbad and brother Roy T, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Willie was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Hermanos. A Visitation will be held at Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St SW, on Saturday, August 1, 2009. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Salazar & Sons Mortuary. FAMARISS -- Thelma Jackson Famariss, 94, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, since 1983, died on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband Walter Famariss, Jr. and is survived by a daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ms. Famariss was born on October 1, 1914, in Logan, Oklahoma, and eventually moved to Pampa, Texas, where she worked in hospital administration. There she met her husband, Walter Famariss, Jr., and they married in 1936 and moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, where they worked in the oil refinery industry. Once she moved to Albuquerque, she became civically involved in a number of clubs, including the Literary Club, Beta Sigma Phi, garden clubs, and other similar organizations. She was a veracious reader, a fabulous cook, loved her family dearly and always had a smile and a kind word for all who encountered her. A memorial service for Ms. Famariss will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Bear Canyon Estates Chapel, 4440 Morris Street NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87111. GARZA -- Martha (Vigil) Garza, age 74, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on July 28, 2009. She was surrounded by her family. Martha was born May 6, 1935, to Jessie and Tom Vigil. She was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque and enjoyed her family immensely, especially her grandchildren. She rarely missed a sporting event involving her family and her beloved Lobos. She loved traveling and crocheting and made the best tortillas, tamales and natillas in town. She was the secretary of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Queen of Heaven Conference, and a member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Society. Martha is survived by her husband Erasmo Garza; her brother Orlando Vigil; uncle Edward Padilla; brothers and sisters-in-law Bruce and Sylvia Banks, Rudolfo and Edna Garza, Victor and Lydia Gonzales and Marcella Garza; her children Daniel Garza, Henry Garza (Geri), Christine Garza Bronson (Nicholas), Larry Garza (Michelle) and James Garza (Michelle); 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces and grandnephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law Angeline and William Green; brother-in-law Fernando Garza; aunt Feliciana Padilla; uncle Johnny Duran; uncle Ross; and aunt Lucy Duran. HOCKERT -- John Richard (Dick) Hockert, age 90, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1996, died in Albuquerque on July 27, 2009. Dick was born in Nappanee, IN, on June 20, 1919, the son of Hugh and Nancy Hockert. He graduated from Nappanee High School in May, 1937. He married the love of his life, Jeanne Alice Mishler, on November 19, 1942. He was a successful entrepreneur in Troy, OH, starting two automobile exhaust and tail pipe manufacturing plants while in his fifties. Dick retired in 1981 and he and Jeanne moved first to the Innisbrook Resort in FL and then to The Landings, on Skidaway Island, outside Savannah, GA. In 1996, Dick and Jeanne moved to Rio Rancho, NM to be closer to their son and grandchildren. Dick and Jeanne enjoyed golf and bridge as hobbies. Dick also was an excellent carpenter and stained glass artisan employing his talents for his family and church. Dick has been an active member of the United Methodist Church (UMC) all of his life. He and Jeanne helped the Skidaway Island UMC grow from a small group meeting in a double wide trailer to a church of over 1,000 members during their time on Skidaway Island. Soon after moving to Rio Rancho, Dick and Jeanne transferred their membership to Rio Rancho UMC, where Dick remained an active member until his death. Dick was a faithful Christian and a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. Dick is survived by Jeanne Hockert, his wife of 66 plus years; his younger brother Jeffrey Hockert of Chesterfield, MO; his son, John William Hockert and daughter-in-law, Ranelle Hockert of Albuquerque, NM; and his two grandsons -- John Andrew Hockert (and his wife, Kathy) of Williamsburg, KY and Ian Hockert of Albuquerque, NM. There will be a Memorial Service celebrating Dick's life at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009 at Rio Rancho United Methodist Church, 1652 Abrazo Rd. NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124, with a reception to follow. A private graveside interment service will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Vista Verde Memorial Park. MESTAS -- Lillian C. Mestas, 86, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 28, 2009 after a brief illness. Born in Hoehne, CO, Lillian, her husband and family settled in Albuquerque 63 years ago. She was a long time member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, a retiree from AT&T, and was an award winning Avon Representative for many years. Lillian embraced life until her illness made it impossible to do so. She expressed her talents in a variety of ways from successful stock market investing to oil painting and playing the piano. Her family, friends, neighbors and everyone she came in contact with were charmed by her engaging demeanor and easy sense of humor. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Gasper; children, Liane Mestas, Ken Mestas, Janie Reyes and husband, Nicholas Reyes, Richard Mestas and wife, Maria Valencia Mestas, Randy Mestas and wife, Ruth Mestas, and Charles Mestas; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and a sister, Sue Atencio. Lillian was dear to each one of them and will be greatly missed. A rosary was recited Thursday, July 30, 2009 at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church. SPRINGER -- Max R. Springer 78, rode off into the sunset for the last time on July 24, 2009 after a long illness. He moved to Albuquerque in the early 1950's where he played and taught guitar for 18 years. In the late 1960's he changed careers and became a piano tuner / technician. Twenty years ago he moved to Valencia County eventually settling in Belen where he was an avid horse lover and raised Paint Horses. Max was preceded in death by both parents and older brother Gene. He is survived by his two sons, David Springer and his wife Janice of Albuquerque and Danny Springer of T or C, NM; one granddaughter Lisa Springer; and two great-grandchildren Savannah and Mark. He is also survived by his brother, Dale Springer and wife Sue of Van Wert, Ohio as well as numerous nephews and nieces. WEST -- Wallace R. (Papa Wally) West lost his battle with cancer July 30, 2009. Wallace was one of Albuquerque's long time pawn brokers, served in the Air Force and he loved life, his children, and the mountains. His final request was to go camping one last time. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years Nelda Sue Birmingham West; four sons Michael and his fiancee Treva, Mark R. and his fiancee Sharie, Mark D. and his wife Diane and David Brewer and his wife Lori; four daughters Priscilla and her husband Larry, Cinderella and her husband Frank, Tonja Colle and Tesha Fitzgerald; grandchildren Charles Michael, Ronnie, Candace, Jaden, Jacob, Andrew, Kailey, Zevin, Colton, Ron, Desiree, Samantha, Emily, Chad, Tyler, LeAnn; and one great-grandchild Kemper. Wallace is also survived by one sister, Debra White and her husband Carney of Tennessee. Wallace was preceded in death by his wife Penny May West; parents Joe Hunter West and Mildred Lee Lovelady; one brother Hollis Anthony West; and his son James Eugene West.
