BLAIR -- Edward With peace and dignity, Edward Blair, 85, passed away on May 31, 2009. He died as he lived-gently and quietly-admired and respected by all who knew him. Edward was born in Washington, D.C. on June 29, 1923, the only son and eldest of five children of Edith and Edward Blair. When the children were very young, their father died in Tucson, and Edward became the "man of the family." They remained in Arizona until his mother decided to move to California. Because her husband had died as a result of problems related to his service in World War I, Edward's mother had widow's preference for government jobs and obtained one in San Francisco. She wanted to move the family there so that all the children could attend California public universities, which at that time, did not charge tuition. Edward joined the army, hoping to be accepted as an air cadet. When that plan failed, he finished high school and then joined the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was stationed in Foggia, Italy, where he piloted B-24 Liberator bombers during the last six months of the war. After the war he earned a B.A. from San Francisco State University and then a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the prestigious Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa. Before becoming established in a professional career, he did whatever was necessary for his survival. He worked as a newspaper boy, soda jerk, busboy, dock worker, forklift operator, gold panner and bellboy at a hotel at the Grand Canyon. He had a distinguished career as the head of the publications function at Rocketdyne, which supplied rocket engines for the space program. He helped to develop one of the first computer systems for management, about which he wrote one of the earliest definitive texts. Later he served as a systems consultant to United States governmental agencies and Fortune 500 companies. After five years of extensive research, he published his critically acclaimed novel, "A Journey to the Interior." Edward was multi-talented with a broad spectrum of interests. He loved classical music and bluegrass, and played the banjo, guitar, trumpet, Jew's harp, autoharp and jug! He was a semi-professional astronomer, building his own telescope. He was a champion sharpshooter, trained troops in weaponry during the war, built a magnificent rifle from scratch, and piloted gliders. He loved travel, books, theater, and the outdoors of the Southwest. He was a special father to his daughter, Emily Carmany, and husband, Peter, of Albuquerque, and to his son, Edward, of Las Vegas, NV. He is also survived by his loving grandson, Chris Adams, and wife, Rebecca Holcombe; his sisters, Shirley Lange, of Moscow, ID, Jean Coltrin of Calistoga, CA, and Joyce Breeland, of Sebastopol, CA; his ex-wife Joani; and his devoted companion, Ina Miller. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth; and his sister, Barbara Goerndt. Edward will be remembered for his superior intelligence, sharp wit, loving, generous nature and gentleness of spirit. A celebration of Edward's life will take place on June 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Friends are invited to call 828-2176 for information and directions. Please bring stories and mementos to share. Donations in Edward's memory may be made to the Nature Conservancy, New Mexico Field Office, 212 E. Marcy, Suite #200, Santa Fe, NM 87501. The file number for the donation is #1857776.

She approached every holiday with the excitement and enthusiasm of a child; the anticipation, preparation and planning was as much fun as the holiday itself. She would pour her love into the food she prepared, the decorations and all her special touches. Debbie was a flurry of activity. Her crazy little kooky laughter would transform a moment. When she spoke of her grandchildren, you could hear the love in her voice. The heart of Debbie was her children, and especially her grandchildren. The love she had for them was immeasurable; they were inseparable. Debbie would go without, so no one would have to. Her satisfaction in life came from what she could give to others. Memorial Services will be held Monday, June 15, 2009, 6:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Chapel. Should friends desire, the family would graciously accept contributions. Please visit our online guestbook for Debbie at www.RememberTheirStory.com French 1111 University Blvd. NE (505) 843-6333
