They traveled the world and the United States together before settling in New Mexico in 1972. Alice was fiercely devoted to her husband, 7 children and 10 grandchildren. She provided a warm loving home for her family for over 51 years, always putting her family above everything else. Alice doted on her grandchildren and traveled often to birthdays, dance exhibitions, soccer games, volleyball games, graduations and baseball games. While she loved to dance and spend time whale watching on her lanai in Hawaii, her favorite times were spent in her home in Albuquerque with her family, especially during holiday gatherings. Alice cherished her backyard; the swimming parties; seeing the Sandia Mountains everyday; catching the humming birds feed during her morning cup of coffee; and planting flowers every spring. She was an avid and voracious reader and you could always find the latest mystery thriller on her night stand. Her quick wit and lively personality made life in her home fun and memorable. With such a large family, she often quipped, "We're off like a herd of turtles!", and "Did you think we would never get here?" at the start of family outings and journeys. She was very much loved and will be deeply missed by her entire family. Surviving Alice, are her husband of 51 years, John of Albuquerque; her children and grandchildren, Stacey Marie Lopez and her husband Rey of Ft. Collins, CO, and their children Elizabeth, Alexandra and John-Reynold; John Morgan Gromek of Las Vegas, NV.; Christopher Gromek and his wife Nancy of Gilbert, AZ, and their children Crystal and Ethan; Mark Gromek of Berkley, MI; Michael Anthony Gromek and his wife Doris of Santa Fe, NM, and his children Michael Jr., Mary and Sara; Robert John Gromek and his wife Monica of Amarillo, TX., and their children Ryan and Conor; and, Matthew Paul Gromek and his wife Stephanie of Albuquerque, NM; one sister, Mary Ann Walsh of Poughkeepsie, NY; two brothers, Gerald Walsh and his wife Dorothy of Irvine, CA., and Timothy Walsh of Charlotte, N.C. HAALAND -- John E. Haaland, 94, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009. He was born and raised by Norwegian immigrant parents on a farm near Carpio, North Dakota. John received his Bachelors Degree in Chemistry from Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN and taught school for one year. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in WWII in North Africa and Italy. He attained the rank of Captain. After the war, John received his Masters Degree in Physics from New York University. After 11 years in the Army, he went to work at Sandia National Labs as a scientist and Supervisor of the Technical Training Division before retiring in 1981, after 28 years. While at Sandia, he was instrumental in initiating Sandia's Shoes for Kids program every Christmas, a program which has recently celebrated its 50th year. John was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Albuquerque, since 1948. His interest in children and Christian education led to many years of service as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. Over the years John served the church at local, regional and national levels with his leadership, time, and commitment. Ecumenism was also an issue of great interest for John. He served on the NM Conference of Churches Board for 6 years and was a member of the Albuquerque Division of the NM Council of Churches. He was president of The Storehouse in Albuquerque for 12 years and was instrumental in gaining support and financial resources from the national church for this community resource. John continued serving on the board into his 90's and was made Emeritus Board Member in 2008. While working with the growing numbers of hungry people in Albuquerque, John realized that changes in our government processes were necessary to improve the lives of the poor. He became an advocate who gave voice to persons with no political voice. He was instrumental in establishing the Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry (now Lutheran Advocacy Ministry) in New Mexico, in 1984. Its goal is to work with legislators and public officials in NM to pass laws to protect and help the sick, mentally ill, elderly, and children of this state; to promote justice and reduce discrimination; and to bring hope for the future to the poor of NM. John worked effectively for years with LOGM as a Board Member and Committee Chair, visiting legislators and writing letters to them to support these goals. For 16 years, John and his wife Chris, worked to raise the awareness of St. Paul and other congregations in Albuquerque, of the churches' call to welcome all people, including gays and lesbians, "to worship God and serve beside us." John longed for this welcome to become a public commitment of his congregation before he died. Thank you, people of St. Paul Lutheran Church, for giving him this wonderful gift in 2005. John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Chris; sons, John P. Haaland, David M. Haaland and wife Kathy, James A. Haaland, Thomas E. Haaland and wife Pat and daughter Vickie Paley and husband Thomas. Mr. Haaland is also survived by eight grandchildren; Elisa Haaland, Tashia Camp and husband Darrol, Jennifer Cannon and husband Keil, Leora Davis and husband Nick, Terra Wilson and husband Marcus, Malena Von Deneen and husband Steve, Ryan Haaland, and Thomas T. Paley II; three great grand children, Tierra Ellison, Tajiah Ellison, and Tevante Paley Wilson; and numerous foster children and other family and friends. The family wishes to thank Presbyterian Hospice for helping to ease the last two months of John's life. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009, 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 Indian School Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to The Storehouse or St. Paul Lutheran Church.

ORTEGA -- Carlos The sun was out today as God embraced a timeless soul. His was a marked passing with a quiet fortitude that was a reflection of his life. Carlos Ortega was born in the land of Arabela, New Mexico. It was a still, beautiful land that reflected in his eyes as he watched and listened to his family grow. He was never one for words, but his love was as deep as the heritage he passed on to his great grandchildren. He left for his journey among his loving family in a home that he built with his hands. It was a home whose cornerstone was chiseled from a quarry of love and decency. It is this legacy he leaves for his children and grandchildren. It takes great courage to exist through so many decades in a stoic and ambivalent world that seems to both embrace and repel us in its loving care with every new day and challenge. "Tata" had that tenacious soul and a depth of courage this generation may never understand or be able to comprehend. He was in the most hardened sense of the word a true man, and in the tenderest sense of the words husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. By E.S. Carlos Ortega, 91, of Albuquerque was preceded in death by wife of 66 years Josefita; granddaughters, Jennifer and Tina. Survivors include two sons, Carlos Jr. and Lou Sanchez, Juan Ortega, daughter Carmen and husband David Chavez. Grandsons John Vincent Chavez and wife Monica, Matthew Ortega, Tulsa, Ok., and Mitchell Ortega, Anchorage, Alaska; great-grandsons Gannon, Logan and Aden Chavez, sister, Rose Brunson, T or C. Constant weekly visitors friend Ernest Guillen and nephew JoRay and JoAnn Ortega and many other surviving nieces, nephews and friends that were all a part of "Tata's" 91 years. Carlos retired from Sandia Labs at the age of 55. Early retirement gave him the opportunity to spend time with his beloved family, home and livestock which were all his pride and joy. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rosary will be held Monday April 20, 2009 at Gate of Heaven Chapel, 7500 Paseo del Norte N.E., 821-0800 at 10:00 a.m. and Burial M (505) 228-1040 Mass to follow.

VOCALE -- Emanuel Longtime Luna County resident Emanuel Vocale died Tuesday night at the home he built for his family west of Deming 70 years ago. He went peacefully and gently into that good night. He was 96. Vocale was born January 28, 1913 in San Nicandro Garganico in the province of Foggia, Italy, to Nuzio (Nick) Vocale and Carmela Sticozzi. He came to the United States with his mother in 1926 to join his father who had immigrated to the United States 13 years earlier. For two years, Vocale lived in West Virginia where his father had secured work in the coal mines of Williamsburg. In 1928, Vocale moved to Deming after his father responded to a sign he saw in the window of the mine company store encouraging immigrants to move to Deming to become farmers. The encouragement was offered by the Mimbres Valley Chamber of Commerce. The family traveled by train to Deming where they were greeted by Chamber members--and a raucous dust storm. To their dismay, they found more raw land covered in mesquite and sand than land ready to till and grow crops. Although Vocale's father seriously considered returning to West Virginia, he recognized that remaining in Deming offered the real opportunity of owning land-an opportunity unfathomable in his native Italy. So the little family, which now included an infant daughter, determined to turn the land into their livelihood. Working toward that goal, father and son worked together with horse-drawn farm implements to grow the major crop of the area, pinto beans. In 1936, Vocale returned to his birthplace to marry Grace Panzone, his loving wife of 72 years. The marriage proposal came after five long-distance years of courtship during which time neither saw the other. The last time they had seen each other was as children before Vocale sailed to America in 1926. Grace and Emanuel married in San Nicandro on 16 January 1937 with plans to return to Deming together in April. But remaining in Italy became unsafe for Vocale, now an American citizen, with World War II looming and with Benito Mussolini declaring all Italians the world over repatriated to serve in the Italian military. Vocale left Italy two days before Mussolini's men came calling. Grace sailed for America in April as planned. The newlyweds lived on Vocale's father's farm west of Deming for the first two years of their marriage while Vocale farmed with his father. In 1939, Vocale bought the first acreage of his current farm where he built a house for his growing family. Although farming in the Depression years was difficult, Vocale managed to become the first farmer in New Mexico to purchase a tractor. He clearly recognized the benefits of mechanized farming. During his lifetime, Vocale advocated soil and water conservation. He believed farm land should be preserved through crop rotation and water should be conserved through cement irrigation ditches. Although Vocale retired from farming in 1975, the farm is still operational today. Vocale was also very active in the Deming Rotary Club, serving as president and twice being named to the Paul Harris Award. He enjoyed deep sea fishing in Mexico and hunting wild game with close friends. Vocale is probably best known for the small vineyard on his farm and the homemade wine he generously offered to friends, visitors, and strangers. Vocale is survived by his wife Grace; children, Carmela Rabidoux (Ken), Gloria Moskowitz (Seymour) and Mary Lou Vocale; grandchildren, Julie and John E. Janecka, David and Richard Vocale and Sharon Freire (Patricio); great-grandchildren, Ryan, Courtney, Bailee, and Drake Janecka; Richelle, Jada, and Cara Vocale, Gabriel and Diego Freire and sisters, Rose Haferkamp (Hugh) and Anne Butterfield (Bernard). He was preceded in death by an infant son, Nuzio, and an adult son, Carl Emanuel. Friends are invited to greet the family Sunday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 at Baca's Chapel. Patty Salesses will lead the Rosary immediately thereafter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church on Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Fr. Enrique Lopez Escalera will officiate and the concluding services and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Don Hartman, Jerry Zacek, Tom Brdecko, Tom Lindsay, Paolo D'Andrea and Pete Sainz. Honorary pallbearers are all present and past members of Rotary and all member of the coffee club. The family requests that memorials be made to the Rotary Polio Plus fund in care of the Deming Rotary Club, PO Box 1883, Deming, NM 88031, or Holy Family Church or to Ambercare Hospice. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels, 811. S. Gold, Deming, NM 88030. Phone 505-546-9671.
