BENAVIDEZ -- Boleslo P. Benavidez (Tata), 93, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on December 8, 2008. Mr. Benavidez is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mrs. Josefita C. Benavidez; his children, Jennie Sanchez, Lillie Jaramillo and husband, Paul, James Benavidez and wife, Rosemary, Dorothy Benavidez; his sisters, Adelia Sanchez and Mary Centeno and husband, Frank; his brother, Benny Benavidez; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Benavidez was preceded in death by his brother Tony. BLAYLOCK -- Hulon M. Blaylock, Sr., age 46, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2008. He was an expert technician and a gifted musician who was most fond of the guitar. Hulon never met a stranger and had many, many friends and loved his family. He also was a motorcycle hobbyist and enjoyed riding horses. Hulon is preceded in death by his father, Jefferson Blaylock; and his sister, Joy Kay Hobbs. He is survived by his children, Hulon Monroe Blaylock, Jr., Clayton Dale Blaylock, Travis Lee Blaylock and Jolene Nicole Blaylock all of Albuquerque; mother, Joy Blaylock of Los Lunas; siblings, Thalia Sucharda and husband, Charles of Washington, Carlie Otto and husband, Rolly of Wyoming, Lynn Blaylock and wife, Marylyn of SC. Hulon is also survived by a dear friend Jennifer Rogers of Los Lunas and many nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly. All Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Belen on Friday, December 12, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Julia Paulson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Terrace Grove Cemetery. BUTTARI -- Aida Dalia Buttari, 88, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2008. Aida was born April 18, 1920 the daughter of Justo and Remedios Puchol de la Torre in Havana, Cuba. She immigrated to the United States in 1954. She served the community as a school teacher in Cuba and the United States. Aida is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Richardson; son, Omar Buttari; sister, Lydia Lopez; grandson, Tom Richardson; and granddaughter Lillian Richardson. The Visitation will be held on Friday, December 12, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the Service at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services, Sara Road at Meadowlark Lane, Rio Rancho. COOK -- Roy C. Cook, 62, a life-long resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico and recent resident of El Paso, Texas, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 7, 2008, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. Cook & Ruth E. Zimmermann Cook. He is survived by his beloved wife Carmen Diaz Cook; daughter Jennifer Fowler & husband Neil; son Jason Todd Cook & wife Megan; grandchildren, Jacob Fowler, Abby Fowler, Elijah Cook & Sawyer Cook; and a brother Richard Dean Cook. Roy graduated from Rio Grande High School (Class of 1964) Albuquerque, NM and New Mexico State University (Class of 1974), Las Cruces, NM. Roy proudly served his country, as an Officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was a retired Prudential Insurance Agent; Assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America; a private pilot and Estate & Financial Consultant for New Mexico and El Paso, TX. He was a faithful member of 1st United Methodist Church, Albuquerque & St. Mark's United Methodist, El Paso. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 12:00 p.m., at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 5005 Love Rd., with Rev. Felicia Hopkins officiating. DAVIS -- Martin Leeroy Davis 1941-2008 Martin Davis went to be among the angels on December 2, 2008. He loved gardening, working in his greenhouse, helping others in their time of need, playing with his grandchildren and talking to his friends from around the state on his CB-radio. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Evelyn Davis; his three sons, Casey Davis and wife Eileen, Chris Davis, Jeff Davis and wife Amy; his two grandchildren, who he enjoyed playing and hanging out with and loved so dearly, Kristin and Nathan; his brothers and sisters, Bill and George Davis, Dorothy Berry and Evelyn Talbee; and all of his nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at the Meadow Lake Community Center on December 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Interment is scheduled for December 18, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.

FLOREZ -- JOSEPH MARK FLOREZ, age 44, passed away December 5, 2008. He is survived by his father, Jose M. Florez; his mother, Florence J. Florez; sister, Viola E. Florez Tighe (Jerry); brother, Steve J. Florez (Dolores); sister, Louella B. Florez Evans (Jesse); brother, Frank A. Florez (Gloria); sister, Katrina E. Florez Fitt (Jeffrey); brother, Bill Florez (Abby); brother, Kenny Florez (Joanna); sister, Corine Florez Trujillo (Tony); sister, Susan Florez Chavez (Kenneth); brother, Robert Florez (Charrise); and sister, Carmen Florez Mansi (Tom); and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces. Mark was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest on July 25, 1990. He worked as a financial planner for several prominent financial institutions. He was a Philanthropist for many charities and organizations including Casa Esperanza and was a charter member of the Hispanic Cultural Center. Mark was also a member of several civic organizations including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and very devoted to the Brothers of Christ in the Desert Monastery in Abiquiu, NM. He was part of the inception of Our Lady of the Desert Monastery of Benedictine Sisters in Gobernador, NM. Mark was a kind, gentle and loving son, brother and friend to all who knew him. FREGIA -- Kelly N. Fregia, 52, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Kelly was a very caring and compassionate man. He was a loving and devoted son, brother, dad and partner. Kelly retired from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office in 2002 and returned to work for the BCSO Court Services in 2004. He was a dedicated officer and passionate about his career in law enforcement and was very well respected by his peers. He was a true, second generation Dallas Cowboys fan. He is survived by the love of his life and soulmate Stephanie; son, Nick and his companion Kari and her daughter Larissa; dad, Kelly L.; sisters, Minnie Jo and her husband Jeff, LeeAnn and her partner Frank; nieces, Trudy, Lena and her husband Jason; nephew Scott; great-nieces and nephews, Jeffrey, JJ, Madison, Sequoia, Emma and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins and his many loyal brothers and sisters in law enforcement. HAGER -- Frank Hager was born in Pilot Point, Texas on Thursday, November 1, 1928, All Saint's Day, and though he wasn't a saint in every sense of the word, he was a true saint to his family and friends. He passed away on Monday evening, December 8, 2008. He spent most of his early years in Oklahoma, and moved to Dumas, Texas, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Dru Brown. Their relationship has endured for over sixty years. They moved to Albuquerque in 1949 and started their own business, Hager Lawn Sprinkler. After a seven year period spent in South Carolina where Frank worked on the Savannah River Project, they returned to Albuquerque in 1959 to resume with the irrigation company. Over the years many parks, schools, and golf courses including UNM South were watered with systems installed by Frank's company. They lived in Farmington for a number of years where Frank worked on the power plants. On their return to Albuquerque he designed and built Roll'n Home Park which has flourished for thirty five years. Frank was active in many community organizations especially the Ballut Abyad Shrine where he was a member and captain of the Shrine Patrol and on the Fez Club Committee. He enjoyed driving the old fire truck in recent years. He was also Hospital Chairman for 20 years and coordinated mini-clinics for crippled children and arranged travel for many to the Los Angeles Shrine Hospital for free treatment. He was a member of the Board of Directors of that hospital for eight years. He was a member of the Shriners of North America, the Masonic Lodge Temple 60, the Royal Order of Jesters, the Albuquerque Rotary Club, and the New Mexico Pipe Trades Local 112. He was also a lifetime Democrat and supporter of the party. Frank is survived by wife, Dru; three children, Noel Hager and wife, Susan, Renee Claffy, and Brent Hager and wife, Kim; grand children, Gina Sims, Cara Claffy, Evan Hager and wife, Sovereign, Todd and Sarah Hager, Bonnie and Lexi Hager; great-grandchildren, Zach, Ava and Grant Sims. Also surviving are Frank's sisters, Movis Butler and Collette Hager. Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He was generous and helpful to one and all. He will be greatly missed. HANOSH -- George J. Hanosh, 70, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2008. He was born January 7, 1938 in Albuquerque, NM to George S. and Annabelle Hanosh. Upon his graduation from Highlands University he and his wife Barbara moved to Grants to join in a family business. He was a General Motors dealer for 35 years and served as president of the NM Automobile Dealers Association. George was a prominent business and political leader in the Grants and surrounding area for many years. He served under four governors on various committees and served ten years as a NM State Representative. George was an avid golfer and won his green jacket in the NM Senior State Championship. George has served the people of NM well. Throughout his life, George has had many opportunities and setbacks but he never stopped believing that he could make a difference. Although he is known for his public achievements he has always provided for his family and prided himself on their accomplishments. George is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara; his children Scott Hanosh and wife, Michelle of Paradise, CA, Dawn Roberts and husband, Mitchell of Colorado Springs, CO, Kelly Berhost and husband, Kevin of Farmington, and Jerri Mares and husband, Mike of Grants; grandchildren Josh Hanosh and wife, Danielle of Sacramento, CA, Samantha and Emily Roberts of Colorado Springs, Casee McBride of Albuquerque, Ryan and Cory McBride of Farmington, and Sydney Mares of Grants; and three great-grandchildren. KING -- Alice Marie Martin King, 78, of Stanley, NM passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2008 in Albuquerque, NM with her loving family beside her. Alice King, New Mexico's longest serving First Lady, was born to Kenneth and Audra (Farmer) in Moriarty, NM on May 13, 1930. Alice was a life long resident of Stanley, NM. She married Bruce King on June 1, 1947 at the Moriarty Baptist Church in Moriarty, NM. She has two sons, Bill and Gary; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Alice King has been one of the most powerful advocates for New Mexico children and families for over 30 years. As Chair of the Juvenile Justice Council, she worked closely with the Juvenile Justice Task Force to review the New Mexico Children's Code. She chaired the Governor's Task Force on Children and Families. This task force held many town meetings around the state and developed legislation that created the first-in-the-nation Children, Youth and Families Department. Alice King has also chaired many committees which led to a number of accomplishments in the field of education. She assembled and led a team of educators and scientists in developing a successful proposal for a $10 million grant from the National Science Foundation for systemic change in Mathematics and Science Education. She led several summits on Education to develop strategies to address educational improvement. Mrs. King has served on the board of many charitable organizations, including New Mexico Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, March of Dimes, Special Olympics, Roadrunner Division of the Red Cross, All Faiths Receiving Home, the San Felipe Del Rio Children's Home, New Mexico Conference of Families, United Way of Albuquerque, New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation, and the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation. As a member of the Board of Directors of the New Mexico Boys Ranch, she spearheaded the effort that resulted in the establishment of the New Mexico Girls Ranch. She continued to be actively involved with this institution which provides a residential opportunity for adolescent women. She helped create and is the driving force behind the New Mexico Children's Foundation. As a parent, she was very active as a leader in her children's activities. She taught Sunday school for several age levels and was a 4-H leader for 14 years. She was also an active band parent. She was a Charter member and state official of the New Mexico Cowbelles, a national women's organization which promotes the livestock industry. Among the many awards Mrs. King has received are the National Jewish Hospital and Research Center Humanitarian Award, Distinguished Women Award from the University of New Mexico Alumni Association, the New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award, Woman of Distinction in the Field of Agriculture, Hope Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Outstanding Youth Advocate Award from Youth Development, Inc., Big Brothers/Big Sisters Recognition Award, and an Award from the New Mexico Conference on Aging. Mrs. King was the first inductee into the New Mexico Women's Hall of Fame. She has received an Honorary Associates Degree from Santa Fe Community College and an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from New Mexico State University. Alice is preceded in death by her parents; and granddaughter Caitlyn King. She is survived by her husband, Bruce King of Stanley, NM; two sons, Bill King of Stanley, NM and Gary King and his wife, Yolanda of Stanley, NM.; brother, Kenneth Martin of Moriarty, NM; sisters, Shirley Repass and her husband Bob of Moriarty, NM and Newlyn Witt of Barstow, CA; grandchildren, Becky and Tom Spindle, Jenny and Josh Caldes, Stacy King, and Eric and Cameron Anderson; and eight great grandchildren. Alice will lie in state at the New Mexico State Capital from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 10, 2008. MATUSZESKI -- Eleanor Sanchez Matuszeski, 93, a resident of Albuquerque since 1953, died Monday, December 8, 2008. She is survived by her son, Richard A. Matuszeski and wife Denise of Albuquerque; two grandsons, Ryan Anthony and Russell Aric, both of Albuquerque; sister, Margaret Cafarelli and husband Tony of Tempe, AZ; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Matt" Matuszeski; seven brothers and sisters; and her parents. She was the eighth of nine children born to Juan F. and Mariana Miera Sanchez on March 8, 1915 in Lemitar, NM. Eleanor received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of New Mexico. She taught Elementary school for 25 years. Eleanor loved to travel with her husband. When Matt was alive, they loved to socialize and dance at the Elks. She was a very loving and giving person, taking an active interest in her family and friends. Eleanor was a long time member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, helping to establish the elementary school. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. MAYER -- Hans J. Mayer, 85, died peacefully on December 4, 2008, having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last October. He was born on July 15, 1923 in Frankfurt, Germany, the eldest son of Dr. and Mrs. Wilhelm Mayer. He is survived by his wife June to whom he was married for 44 years, their son Andrew, and his younger brother Stefan. At the age of 15, Hans, together with his family, moved from Germany because of persecution by the Nazi regime, and settled in British Honduras (now known as Belize). When he was 17 he left British Honduras for the United States and attended Southern Florida College where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in chemistry. He was drafted into the Army in 1949, where he served for one year, and he then joined the Reserves where he served for 14 years with the rank of Master Sergeant. At the age of 24 he discovered the teachings of the philosopher, Harold V. Percival, outlined in the book "Thinking and Destiny." Hans got to know Mr. Percival personally, and throughout his life was a follower of Mr. Percival's philosophy. On leaving college he taught math on Long Island, New York, and after a few years joined his brother Stefan in starting a company in the wholesale travel industry, arranging vacations all over the world for thousands of Americans. In the 1970's he designed and wrote a software computer system for his company, and later put in similar systems for other companies in the wholesale travel industry. In 1997 he and his wife moved from the East Coast to New Mexico, and Hans continued to work as a substitute teacher in the Rio Rancho School System up until October 2008. He and his wife resided in the Enchanted Hills section of Rio Rancho, and Hans served on the board of the Enchanted Hills Homeowners Association for about five years. He enjoyed outdoor activities. He skied for many years, both in the European Alps and in other ski areas in the United States. He was an active sailor while living on the East Coast, racing catamarans from a sailing club in Connecticut. He took up hiking on his arrival in New Mexico, and became a hiking group leader for the New Mexico Mountain Club for about five years, conducting weekly hikes until ill health in October of this year forced him to give it up. He loved music, especially opera, and was a member of a local opera group, also attending concerts and operas in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Cremation has already taken place. At his request, there will be no Memorial service, but a private Memorial gathering for friends and family is being arranged for a later date. MOORE -- Brandi Taylor Moore, age 11, a resident of Belen, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Children's Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. She was a very active member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, where she sang with the choir at 10:00 a.m. Mass. Brandi was very musically gifted with a love for violin, piano, and singing. She was an avid reader and writer who enjoyed writing poetry. She was competitive and an advocate for Global Warming issues, as well as World Peace and safety. Brandi loved school. She was a 7th grade honor roll student at Belen Middle School. Brandi was always smiling and happy, she enjoyed life to its fullest. She also loved animals and was aspiring to be a veterinarian. Brandi is survived by her grandparents, Papa, Raymond and Granny, Refugia Moore; her sister, Samantha Moore; her brother, Gary Ray Moore; and her natural father, Gary Ray Moore, Sr. All Services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, beginning with a Viewing on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Final Viewing will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 10:00 a.m., with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place following the Mass at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Gary Moore, Sr., Gary Ray Moore, Joe Maestas, Damon Fleming, Antonio Largo and Doug Blagg. Joe Atencio will serve as honorary pallbearer. ORTIZ -- Donaciano A. "Chano" Ortiz, 71, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2008. Donaciano was born June 22, 1937 the son of Frank R. and Bernardina Armijo Ortiz in Pecos, New Mexico. PERKINS -- Virginia Becker Perkins died on December 6, 2008 in Las Cruces, NM. She was born to Malcolm Edward Becker and Oleta Edleen Fronabarger Becker on March 21, 1931, in Boise City, Oklahoma. As a child she lived for a time with her maternal grandparents, Cola and Edward Fronabarger on their homestead in Sofia, NM, and later with her paternal grandmother, Lena Fox Becker, and aunts, Hazel Becker and Virginia Becker Johnson, in Clayton, NM, while her mother completed her teaching degree. Later, she and her mother, grandmother, and sister lived in Des Moines, NM, and Las Vegas, NM, before the family moved to Las Cruces, where her mother taught elementary school for many years. Virginia attended Las Cruces Union High School, graduating in 1949, and also New Mexico State University where she was a member of Chi Omega. As a high school student, she worked at the Rio Grande Theater in Las Cruces where she met Donald Roderick Perkins who also worked there. The two were married in 1950 at St. James Episcopal Church in Mesilla Park, NM. She and Col. Perkins lived many places during his military and civilian careers. Mrs. Perkins worked as a secretary in various legal and medical offices in Las Cruces. Mrs. Perkins is survived by her daughter, Karen Elizabeth Perkins Willis and fiance Edward Shirkey of Las Cruces; son, Frank Sutherland Perkins and wife Terry Villescas Perkins of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Cynthia Oleta Perkins, of Corpus Christi, TX; and daughter Kathryn Sue Perkins Holguin and husband Carlos of Rio Rancho, NM. She is also survived by grandchildren, Juliet Perkins Flores and Brian Paul Perkins of San Antonio and John Perkins Willis of Las Cruces; great-grandchildren, Michael Perkins, Gabriel and Mia Flores, and Isabella Perkins; and sister, Marcia Sue Becker Perkins and husband, Roland, of Hollister, CA. Her parents precede her in death. PRICE -- Elva Jean Price, age 84 and a resident of Albuquerque since 1954, died Sunday, December 7, 2008. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Carolyn Sue Moore and husband John, William Eric Price and wife Denice, Kendall Ann Hanson and husband Bruce, and Andrew Brian Price and wife Norma Jean; 11 grandchildren: William Moore, Melissa Campbell Moore, Angela "Jean" Valek, Nathan Price, Adam Price, Loren Hanson, Joshua Price, Christilynn Price, Alex Price, Zhora Price and Hero Price; three great-grandchildren: Summer Lynn Price, Colin Campbell, and Connor Campbell. Jean also has two living siblings: Cora Ellon Rogers and Geary Brogden, as well as extended family and friends. Family preceding her in death is her father and mother, Wilmer Alton and Pearl May Brogden, and her two brothers, Billie Don and Michael Brogden. Elva Jean Brogden was born on September 8, 1924, in Crosbyton, TX. She attended high school in Brownfield, TX. Her first job was with Latham's Department Store. At 17, she became store manager. In 1942, at 18, Jean joined the war effort. She was employed by Boeing to wire B-29 Superfortress aircraft during WWII. She blessed many B-29 wings with "Win for us and come back home." After the war, Jean worked as a bank teller in Lubbock, TX. There she met and married the redheaded engineer she had told her sister she would meet and marry. They married in 1948. The family resided in Amarillo, TX from 1949-1954 and then moved to Albuquerque, NM where they resided for the majority of their life together. Jean worked as homemaker and family entrepreneur. She managed their family-owned apartments, trailer park, and storage facility. They were faithful members of Temple Baptist Church. Elva Jean Price was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Graveside Service will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM on Thursday, December 11, 2008, at 11 a.m., where she will be interred with her beloved husband. STEPHENS -- Dr. Oscar "Wesley" Stephens III (Col. Ret.), 79, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 8, 2008. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Alice Stephens; children, Diana Lewis and husband, Michael, Gordon Stephens, and Sarah Stephens and husband, James Reynolds; stepchildren, Wendy Padilla and husband, Duane, Julie Ferguson and husband, John McRae, and Mindy Irvine and husband, Doug; grandchildren, Micah, Joshua and Barbara Joyce; brother, Alan Stephens and wife, Wendy; sister, Nancy Stephens; and several other extended family and friends. Dr. Stephens was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar II and Edythe Stephens. He graduated from Messick High School in Memphis, TN. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with his Bachelor's and Doctorate of Dentistry. Wesley joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and retired in 1982 as a Colonel. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Alice, a beloved father to his children, and a loving grandfather. He was a great poker player! He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He lived in New Mexico since 1973 and always wanted to move to NM because of the book, "The Cowboys."
