DIAL -- Ralph Dial, 81, of Estancia, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2008, at his home, with his family beside him. Ralph was born on December 4, 1927 in Silverton/Estancia, NM to Elmer and Lola (Strong) Dial. He always said he was told that it was during a snow storm and the doctor didn't get there for two weeks, but his dad still had to pay the doctor $25.00 for the delivery. He attended Estancia Schools, graduating in 1945. Following graduation he went into the Army, serving during World War II. His overseas assignment was in Japan serving in Occupation Services. He served in the Army 27th Infantry Regiment "Wolf Hounds." Ralph married Bernardine Kemper on September 5, 1948 at her parent's home following the Sunday's evening services at First Baptist Church in Estancia. Ralph was a retired school bus contractor-driver of the Estancia Schools. He also had several businesses during his lifetime. He was a great fix-it man, anything from tuning up ladies sewing machines, repairing clocks, tuning pianos and anything else he was called on to do. He always enjoyed a challenge and did not give up easily whether it was repairing one of the children's toys or unlocking a door for a widow woman who had inadvertently locked herself out of her house. Intrigued with new technology, he would always find out how anything worked, getting into some interesting pickles in the process. Ralph was very active in the American Legion Post 22, where he served as Adjutant and also coordinator for the Honor Guard Team. He also held the office of District 3 Commander for many years until the present time. He was always willing to do whatever he was called upon to do for the American Legion or the Auxiliary. Ralph was a member of First Baptist Church in Estancia. He served in many capacities, during his years of membership, including Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Lay Minister, choir member, and custodian. You could often find him doing some kind of repair, replacing broken windows or just fixing-up around the church. Music and humor marked his life. He spent many happy hours entertaining at nursing homes, community affairs and just jamming with family and friends. His death on December 7, 2008, left many pleasant memories in our hearts. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Ralph is preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother. Ralph is survived by his wife, Bernardine of the family home; daughter, Catherine Pope and her husband Sam of Estancia, NM; brothers, Jack, Alfred and Almer (Buster) of Estancia, NM, and Roy of Brewster, WA. Grandsons, Mark Pope and wife, Kim, Jeremy Pope and wife Alicia, and Clay Pope and wife Larrissa, all of Estancia, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter, several foster children and foreign exchange students that he sheltered and mentored, numerous nieces and nephews, plus a host of friends. KITE -- Roger Wayne Kite, age 62, was lifted up to heaven to join our Lord on Saturday, December 6, 2008. His recent illness brought him back to Albuquerque to be close to family and friends. He was born on December 2, 1946. The second son of John and Elfrieda Kite of Hutchinson, Kansas. Roger spent his early childhood in Kansas. Later on his family settled in New Mexico. In 1965 Roger's focus took a new purpose. It started with a letter of love, one of many he wrote to Diana, his wife to be. Their lives were forever changed. God's plan brought them together in Holy Matrimony August 26, 1967. Roger became a loving and devoted husband to his wife Diana. Together they shared the blessings of two inspiring sons, Kristofor Justin Kite and Roger Wayne Kite II. The family grew as Kristofor married Karen and before long grandson Preston was born. Roger, now became a g-dad (or grand-dad) resulting in many moments of continued joy. Being a quiet man, Roger demonstrated his devotion to his family through action, always steadfast and working hard to improve their lives. During the Vietnam War, Roger served honorably in the U.S. Navy. He was primarily stationed at the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii which led to a lifelong enthusiasm for our 50th state. He and his family returned many times for the beauty, relaxation and peace of mind the islands provided. After leaving the Navy, Roger attended the University of New Mexico pursuing an accounting and business major. While attending UNM he became an avid Lobo enthusiast enjoying the many sporting events with friends and family. His academic accomplishments were key in two family businesses: F&S and Kite Optical. His business acumen and impeccable work ethic made valuable contributions important in each business success. For the past nine years, Roger was the general manager for American Promotional Events in Tulsa Oklahoma. He met all challenges with zeal and determination. His vast experience has always been acknowledged by his colleagues. He kept abreast with every phase related to his occupation. Roger was an active member of the Albuquerque Jaycee where he served on the board and volunteered man hours of service. Side by side, he supported his sons. It began in the early days of Indian Guides, The Boys and Girls Club and continued with team sports of several youth organizations. This set the stage that led to their numerous high school games and tournaments. He was their biggest fan! Roger took special pride in his sons' character development and with a gentle hand guided them in their many endeavors. Roger undeniably became their ultimate role model. During his rare leisure time he pursued an interest in scuba diving, snorkeling and snow skiing. He found contentment in nature. There was no project too difficult or intricate for him to take on. His garage workshop was always well designed and organized. Roger's unique talent in handyman tasks made him the consummate "Mr. Fixit!" Roger's family members include; wife, Diana, 2 sons, Kristofor (Karen), Roger II and 1 grandchild, Preston. His brothers, John (Peggy) Kite of Albuquerque, Ken Kite of Las Vegas, Nevada, Lindsey (Alyson) Kite of Albuquerque and Kelly Kite of Canon City, Colorado; sister Tamara Kite (Martin Richardson) of Huntsville, Alabama; Brother-in-law, Ken (Sharon) Delfeld of Albuquerque; Grandmother, Lois Delfeld of Chino Valley, Arizona; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. WOOD -- Shirley I. Wood was born February 8, 1932 to her parents, Erwin and Nell Burt. As a child, the family moved several times as her father's occupation required. In the 1950's Shirley moved to Albuquerque where she met Gerald Wood and they were married on August 7, 1954. During their 54 years of marriage they raised three daughters. Early in their marriage God called Gerald to be a preacher. He and his lovely wife Shirley served the Lord in many churches. Their first at First Baptist Church in Bosque Farms, NM; then Isleta Pueblo where Pastor Wood preached for three years. Pastor Wood and his lovely wife Shirley then were called to the Rio Grande Baptist Church in the South Valley of Albuquerque where they served faithfully for 31 years. From there they and four other families were called to begin Tower Road Baptist Church in the Westgate area of Albuquerque. Shirley had many talents! She loved to paint and finished 30 to 40 beautiful oil paintings. She also loved to bake and won blue ribbons on her bread at the New Mexico State Fair. In all of their homes Shirley had a beautiful yard with many different kinds of flowers. In the last 12 years of Shirley's life, she suffered with an illness which never stopped her from attending church and serving the Lord. Many precious souls came to know Jesus because of her faithful witness. Shirley went to be with Jesus on Monday, December 8, 2008. She is survived by her husband Gerald; three wonderful daughters, Cindy Smith and her husband, Roger, Bonnie Bird and her husband, Danny, and Julie Graham and her husband, Spencer; her sister, Patricia Mallory; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; many wonderful friends and loved ones. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2008, 10:00 a.m., at Tower Road Baptist Church, 601 86th Street SW, 87121. Interment will follow the Services at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd NE. In lieu of flowers, please make Donations to Missions Department Tower Road Baptist Church, 601 86th Street SW, 87121.
