BAKER -- Nina (Bennie) Baker, 96, a resident of Albuquerque since 1983, passed away peacefully, Saturday, October 11, 2008. She was born in Greenfield, MA on July 30, 1912. Bennie is survived by her sister, Madeline Robbins of Sandwich, MA and several nieces, nephews, grand and great-grandnieces, and nephews. During WWII, she was in the Army Nurse Corps and served as the Chief Nurse of the 184th General Hospital in England. After the war she served in Germany, the Pentagon, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Korea, and as the Chief Nurse of the 2nd Army at the Headquarters on Governor's Island, NY. In 1963, she retired at Fort Devens, MA as a LTC with 20 years of service. Bennie enjoyed photography, travel and collecting coins, stamps and historical items. Through the years she maintained contact with many of her friends from the military. In 1983, she moved from Florida to Albuquerque as one of the first residents at La Vida Llena Retirement Community. Her friends there will miss her smile and hugs. The family wishes to express their thanks for the wonderful care Bennie received in the Independent Living and in Health Care facility at LVL. DONATO -- Nicholas Angelo Donato, a native New Mexican, born September 22, 1961, was welcomed into the throne room of our glorious Father and reunited with his son, Marc and father, Paul on Thursday, October 16, 2008, as a result of an auto accident while working in Le Mars, IA. After three years of mission work in Costa Rica, he returned to Albuquerque as an implementation computer analyst. GASS -- Jimmy Myers Gass December 8, 1946 - October 11, 2008 Jimmy Myers Gass was taken from us on October 11, 2008, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA. A 1961 graduate of Bearden High School in Knoxville, TN, he joined the Navy in 1962. After an honorable discharge, he received his degree in Soil Science from University of Tennessee. After a tenure in the Forest Service, he opened his own Soil Consulting Business in Jonesborough, TN. Jimmy was a free spirit who loved music and the great outdoors. He cherished his family and taught his children how to find the good in everything. He is survived by his loving wife Diane; his sister Florence Hill and husband Sam of Atlanta, GA; daughter Angie Apodaca and husband Ben of Santa Fe, NM; daughter Marti Goff and husband Ron of Santa Fe, NM; daughter Michelle Ivester and husband Mike of Knoxville, TN; daughter Rebecca Gass Benz of CA; daughter Sara Barber and husband Tim of Lorton, VA; and his son John P. Gass of Jonesborough, TN. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and various nieces and nephews. GILBERT -- Betty Alberta Smith Gilbert, 67, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2008. She was born March 27, 1941 on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, in Hoopa CA to Arthur Albert Smith, member of the Salish and Kootenai Nation, and Hazel Wixon, a descendant Cree. She is survived by her son, Terry Hatfield; her daughter Mellissa Gilbert; and her sister, Jaune Quick-to See Smith, member of the Salish and Kootenai Nation and Jaune's husband F. Andrew Ambrose, all of Albuquerque. Betty has two nephews, Bill Ambrose and Neal Ambrose-Smith, and their families, all living in the Albuquerque area, as well as a niece, Roxanne Ambrose, who lives on the Salish and Kootenai reservation in Montana. She was preceded in death by her partner, Edward Lee. Betty had a great love for all her animals. A private service was held. HEDRIC -- Dois Ray Hedric, 88, died Thursday. He is survived by his wife, Chris; daughters: Sue, Elize, Sharon and son: Joe; stepson: Joe Nolen. Ray worked for Santa Fe Railway as a crane operator from Albuquerque to El Paso. He got drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the Army Infantry, fighting in ground in Germany and other close countries. He was proud to serve his country and never talked of the hardships he went through--he was glad to come home alive. Ray belonged to the American Legion 49. He worked in the retail business with both Penney's and Montgomery Ward becoming manager of the carpet department at Montgomery Ward until 1967. He then decided to explore other courses and later became an eager insurance agent and worked for Bankers Life and Casualty until he decided he did not care to be on the road any longer. He had worked Colorado, Texas and New Mexico markets for years. He was such a good humanitarian; he would help anyone in trouble. A Viewing will be Sunday 3:00-7:00 p.m. in the Reflection of Life Chapel (Washington and Cutler NE) followed by a Rosary. HEDRICK -- James (Jim) L. Hedrick, 78, a resident of Bernalillo, NM passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, October 15, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Emily; children, Hazel Romero and Paul, and Sherri Royce; six grandchildren, Vanessa, Michelle, Andrea, Michael James, Jennifer, and Matthew; five great-grandchildren, Alcario, Daniel, Marissa, Felicia, and Analicia Emilia; daughter-in-law, Zada Hedrick; brother, Thomas Hedrick and wife, Loretta; sister-in-law, Tomiko Hedrick; and numerous other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hazel Hedrick; brother, John Hedrick; and sons, James Avery Hedrick and Bruce Dean Hedrick. He was born on August 14, 1930 in Hermosa, CO and served proudly in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge he moved to Albuquerque where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was a proud member of Operating Engineers #953 from 1957 until his death. After his retirement, Jim and Emily moved to Bernalillo, NM where he loved to spend time with his beloved chows, Kando, Kelli and Pepper. He loved to work in his yard, grow his garden, and spend time with his family. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. HURLBUT-MILLER -- Jana Hurlbut-Miller, MD, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2008 after battling cancer for over six years. She died at her new home in Salt Lake City, UT at the age of 38. Born June 2, 1970 in Washington state, Jana then grew up in Albuquerque, NM. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After working in commercial real estate, she realized her true gift was in helping people. She was accepted into medical school at the University of Massachusetts, and graduated in 2001. She married her medical school sweetheart of four years shortly before graduation. They then moved to Houston, TX for residency training, she in family practice and he in ophthalmology. In spite of multiple major surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, Jana completed her residency and worked as a professor for two years at the University of Texas Medical School. She also traveled extensively, studied ceramics and photography, and became a talented potter. She did volunteer work with the Junior League of America, and participated in many charitable events. Jana is the beloved wife of Peter Hurlbut-Miller; and treasured daughter of Bruce Miller, Estelle Miller, and step-mother Jill Miller. She leaves behind siblings Joshua, Seth, and Tamara, as well as countless close friends. Jana's bravery, strength and positive outlook on life has been an inspiration to everyone who had the good fortune to know her. JENSEN -- Mark Alan Jensen, 56, lost his four year battle with bone cancer on Monday, October 13, 2008. He was born January 29, 1952 in Albuquerque and moved to Edgewood in 1983. Mark is survived by his sweetheart, Gail Richards; son, Rory Jensen and wife, Kim Jensen; daughter, Clare Jensen and their mother Jane Jensen; sisters, Mimi Montgomery, Janice Gauman and husband, Denny, Elena Coffman and husband, Gaylan; and sister Leslie Jensen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice K. and Alta Mae Jensen and grandparents, Joe and Mae Hill. Mark graduated from Highland High School in 1970 and UNM in 1974. He became a building contractor in 1974 and began a career in real estate in 1985 working primarily in Albuquerque's East Mountain area. Mark was Owner/Broker of Associated Mountain Realtors in Cedar Crest. He was a founder of the Edgewood Community Library and has been an ardent supporter since opening. In addition to homebuilding, Mark loved to dance, ski, scuba dive and play racquetball. He loved to travel the world and his many destinations are a tribute to a short life well lived. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Saturday, 2:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. PRINCE -- Sally (Sarah) Joy Prince, 87, died peacefully from natural causes on October 14, 2008 in Salt Lake City, UT. She was born April 8, 1921 in Washington, D.C. to James B. Barton and Annie D. Barton and grew up in Santa Fe, NM. Married to Bradford H. Prince for 24 years (later divorced). She worked most of her career in Albuquerque as an executive secretary at Albuquerque National Bank. Sally is survived by her brothers Joseph Barton and wife Mary, Willard Barton and wife Gene, of Salt Lake City; and her children Bart Prince of Albuquerque, Bill Prince and wife Julie, Anne Radcliffe and husband Mike, Jim Prince and wife Saskia all of Salt Lake City; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. RHOTON -- Elmer Earl (Elmo) Rhoton, 69, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly while sleeping in his home on Thursday, October 16, 2008. He was born March 16, 1939, in Hamlin, TX to Marvin and Martha Rhoton, who preceded him in death. Elmo was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Maurine, for over 48 years. He was a loving father and is survived by Pamela Agans and husband, Mark and Tamela Rhoton. His granddaughter, Lexi Grace Agans, was his pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother, JR Rhoton and wife, Nona; aunt, Maurine Rhoton; sister-in-law, Marcia Duggan; and nephews and nieces, Joe Rhoton and wife Rosiland, Rene Swan and husband Mike, Terry Hahn and wife Tammie, Jerry Hahn and wife Cindy, Todd Hahn and wife Angel, and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Elmo was a veteran and proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was a successful commercial realtor for 30 years. The Albuquerque real estate community will remember Elmo for his integrity, loyalty and straight-forward approach to his chosen profession. He had a passion for golf, traveling, and loved photographing autumn trees in Colorado. He had a great sense of humor and an enthusiastic attitude which radiated through his many friendships. SPEYRER -- Cleo Catherine Speyrer, age 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2008. She is survived by children, Linda Haas and husband Dennis from Albuquerque, and Patricia Graves and husband Thomas from Los Alamos NM; grandchildren, Matthew Haas, Adam Graves and wife Joseline, Jana Haas, Melissa Graves, and Benjamin Graves; and beloved cat, Hope. Catherine was preceded in death by son Michael Speyrer; and husband Emile Speyrer. Catherine was involved in Our Lady of Annunciation Women's Guild, Casa Angelica Auxiliary, Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and Extraordinary Ministry of Holy Communion at Our Lady of Annunciation. Catherine was a gifted, caring, outgoing, and very strong woman. She was a true survivor who was able to persevere and stay positive no matter what life threw at her. Her spirit touched everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. She is very loved by her relatives and friends and well be extremely missed. ULLMAN -- M. Joann Ullman of Silver City, NM passed away Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Gila Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at Bright Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Gregg Armstrong officiating of the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Mrs. Ullman is survived by her husband of 59 years Jack Ullman; and son Duane Ullman and his wife Rita of Dickinson, TX; two daughters, Diane Ellison and her husband bill of Auburn, WA, Donna Edgar and her husband Bob of Silver City, NM; seven grandchildren Dora Wagner and her husband Kevin of Saint Paul, MN, Rachel Baker and her husband Robert of Dickinson,TX, Susan Berman and her husband Jason of Olympia, WA, Steven Ellison of Auburn, WA, Margaret Edgar of Tucson, AZ, Lauren Edgar of Silver City, NM, and Scott Edgar of Silver City, NM. One great-grandchild Maggie Berman of Olympia, WA. One brother Collis Redmond and his wife Myrle of Albuquerque, NM. Mrs. Ullman is preceded in death by her parents James and Margaret Redmond. Joann Ullman was born on August 22, 1929 in Miami, AZ. Not long after her birth, Joann moved with her parents to Albuquerque, NM, where she grew up and attended school. After graduation from Albuquerque High School in 1947, Joann attended the University of New Mexico for two years, studying accounting. Joann then married Jack Ullman on September 18, 1949 in Albuquerque. They moved to Chicago, IL where she worked for the World Book Encyclopedia Company to help put her husband through optometric school, then they had their first child Duane. After Jack's graduation from the Chicago College of Optometry, they lived in Albuquerque and had their second child Diane. Then they moved to Silver City and they purchased the optometric practice of Dr. Carl Frymire, a deceased optometrist. Joann worked many years alongside her husband in his practice, as an optometric assistant and office manager. Their third child Donna was born in Silver City. Joann belonged to the First United Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, swimming, and golf. Joann and Jack made Silver City their home for the past 52 years and recently celebrated their 59th anniversary. Joann always put her family first, considering her family to be the most important part of her life. Her deep faith, considering her family to be the most important part of her life. Her deep faith, caring spirit, and optimism were just a few of her many admirable traits. Joann will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
