GURD -- Frank R.N. Gurd, Ph.D., passed away on June 17, 2007, as a result of complications of Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Gurd was born in Montreal, Canada, on January 20, 1924. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and then McGill University, where he received First Class Honors in Biochemistry and won the Hiram Mills Gold Medal in Biology with a B.Sc. in 1945. He was awarded an M.Sc. in 1946 from McGill. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1949 for work involving the fractionation of serum proteins and for determining the physical structure of LDL. Dr. Gurd was visiting professor at Washington University School of Medicine and taught at Cornell University Medical School, Indiana University School of Medicine at Indianapolis, and Indiana University Chemistry Department in Bloomington where he rose to the rank of IU Distinguished Professor. He retired from Indiana University as a Distinguished Emeritus Professor. In 1989 he moved to Albuquerque with his late wife, Ruth S. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Gurd emphasized the relationship of structure and function in plasma proteins, enzymes, myoglobin, and hemoglobin. Along with his late wife, Ruth S. Gurd, M.D., Dr. Frank Gurd taught many students in the chemistry and biochemistry department at Indiana University and at the Medical School (they were enormously proud of their active involvement in the Combined Degree Program). Many of Dr. Gurd's students have gone on to have outstanding careers in the field of medicine and science. Dr. Gurd was the son of Fraser Baillie Gurd, M.D., and Jessie Gibson Newman. JARAMILLO -- Lucy Anadina Jaramillo, age 75, a resident of Tome, NM, left us on Wednesday, July 4, 2007, to join our Heavenly Father in Eternal Paradise. Loving family members were at her bedside when she peacefully joined our Lord and Savior. She was born to the late Juan P. and Lucinda Sanchez of Los Chavez, NM. She was descendant of the illustrious Chavez and Sanchez families of New Mexico. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Lucy was a very hard-working, caring, generous, and spiritual individual. She had a positive outlook on life, and she always gave a ready smile and words of encouragement to everyone she knew. Lucy devoted her life to God, her husband, her eleven children, and her community. She taught her children the enduring values of hard-work, self-sufficiency, responsibility, respect, compassion, perseverance, and most importantly, the love of God. In her youth, Lucy would make, unfailingly, a 10-mile trek on horseback just to attend Sunday mass, even in inclement weather. During the 1950s, she selflessly ministered to the sick and elderly in Tome. Lucy and her late husband, Menard P. Jaramillo, were known as the "Good Samaritans" for their assisting numerous victims of vehicle collisions on Dead Man's Curve near their home from 1950 to 1982. Later, she joined the Peralta Catholic Church Choir to sing joyful praises to our Lord. She very much enjoyed teaching Church hymns to her children and grandchildren. She was truly passionate about singing, dancing, and socializing with other people. She simply loved God, life, and people. A woman of many talents and accomplishments, Lucy was highly respected and loved by her family and community. For many years, she and her late husband owned and managed a dairy farm, which included a large variety of farm animals, an apple orchard, and alfalfa fields in Tome. Lucy was fondly known as "the Apple Lady" because of her great enthusiasm, pride, and love for her marvelous homegrown apples. She and her late husband employed many persons in their lifetime, most of whom were local teenagers, at a time when employment was scarce for young persons. She also worked as a waitress at Lillian's Cafe in Belen, NM, and as an assistant manager and outreach person for the Senior Citizens' Center of Rio Communities. As a bus driver for the Los Lunas Consolidated Schools, Lucy was dearly loved by our school children. Her "youngsters" genuinely enjoyed listening to her fascinating tales about the "rough old days". She was also an apartment manager for many years. She participated as an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Tome, the American Legion Post 99, and the New Mexico Sports and Wellness Club in Albuquerque. Moreover, Lucy's inner and outer beauty, grace, and elegance received special recognition when she graduated as a professional model from the John Powers Academy. Lucy has certainly left an indelible mark on our community. She will always remain in our hearts and memories. She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan P. and Lucinda Sanchez; sisters, Carlota Romero, Prescilla Romero and Lorraine Chavez; brothers, Delfido Sanchez and Melvin Sanchez; double cousins, Clemen Gabaldon and Margie Womack; daughter, Berlinda Jaramillo; and another son named Leo Jaramillo. Lucy is survived by seven children, June, Menard Jr., Richard, Robert, Leo, Lucy Christine Shaffield, and Edward; ten grandchildren; one sister, Josie Romero; two brothers, Silvestre Sanchez and Arsenio Sanchez; double cousin, Felicita Romero; many other relatives; and long-time special friend and companion, Antonio Baca. A public visitation will be held at Romero Funeral Home Chapel, on Sunday, July 8, 2007 with a visitation at 1:30 p.m. and a Rosary to be recited at 2:00 p.m. A final visitation will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Tome, on Monday, July 9, 20007 at 9:30 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. with Father Jose Hernandez presiding. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery, alongside her loving, late husband, Menard, at 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be sons, Menard Jr., Richard and Edward; nephews, Fernando, Tyrone, and Joshua Jaramillo. Honorary pallbearers will be Anthony Jaramillo and Arthur Lovato. Sign Lucy's online register book at www.romerofuneralhomenm.com Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St., Belen.
