GRAHAM -- Bette Kaufman Graham, PhD FRWM(E) A person's life is like a mosaic; designed, shaped, glazed, tested and fired, then assembled piece by piece to finish the work. Bette was an artist and ceramic muralist who crafted each individual piece of clay knowing it contributed a unique quality to a creative work only appreciated on completion. The last pieces of Bette's creative and wonderful life came together August 23, 2007. In addition to her beloved husband, John, Bette is survived by two outstanding daughters, Wendy Gustafson and Kim Kaufman, and their husbands, Karl Gustafson and Ken Miller. She also is survived by three remarkable grandchildren, John and Michelle Gustafson and Alexandra Michel. Bette's cousin, Richard Cohn of Greenwich, Connecticut and Mary Cohn of Concord, Massachusetts, the widow of cousin Tom, are in our thoughts. Bette Regina Gerstenfeld was born of Emil and Corrine Cohn Gerstenfeld in Brooklyn. Loving maternal grandparents and family recognized her special qualities of beauty, vivaciousness, and radiance. She had special permission to awaken Grandfather Max from his afternoon nap so they could go to the movies. She attended P.S.139 and Erasmus High School in Brooklyn. She was determined to be educated and attended Alfred University, Toby Coburn School of Fashion, New York University and the New School for Social Research leading to a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She was an outstanding clinician of the highest personal integrity. Her clinical, educational and innovative community work in Albuquerque since 1967 began with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico; keen and sensitive contributions as Chief Psychologist in the Medical Department at Sandia Laboratories; and exceptional leadership as Executive Director of the Albuquerque Centre for Psychotherapy PA. Bette's exotic attractiveness, fashionable dress, and ability to reach out to people made meeting her a special event. When her children were young, she made sure they were well turned out. She encouraged her daughters, then her grandchildren to experience a wonderful life. Artistry was an organizing principle reflected in a love of beauty in all forms. Whether as family member, clinician, professional colleague, or personal friend, Bette's clarity of purpose, values and ideals fueled rich relationships that will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was a citizen of the world with an attitude of inquiry about the lives of others and indigenous cultures. Language differences were never a problem because her smile was reflected on the face of others she met around the globe. The family wishes to thank fine physicians, nurses, other hospital staff and clergy who were concerned and caring. Interment has taken place in a private family service at Congregation Albert Cemetery. The family invites the public to a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana NE in Albuquerque. No flowers please. Should you wish to remember Bette with a small tribute, her wide interests in the arts, education, and community will match any charity you select. If you make a gift to Congregation Albert, please designate an interest involving your connection with Bette. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE (505) 843-6333 www.frenchmortuary.com
