GABALDON -- GENE In Memory Of Gene Gabaldon Gene Gabaldon went to heaven on September 11, 2006. Gene, a man well liked and loved, and respected by many. Gene, who had so much love for his wife Esther, sons and daughters. Especially his daughter Jeannie whom he always looked out for and did everything possible for. Gene loved all his children just as much. I remember telling his wife Esther, no matter where we go Gene runs into people he knows, and stops and holds conversation with them, which is great, respect others and they will always respect you. I remember when I bought my motorcycle I mentioned to Gene that all I needed now was a trailer for it, well that was all it took for Gene to surprise me with one. Gene was a wonderful man who was always there for anyone he could help, and help them he did. Gene will be missed so much by his wife Esther and family, and by so many. Keep in mind that Gene is waiting for the day that we will all be together again. Gene had a special kind of love for two of his grandchildren, Christopher and Jessica Gabaldon whom he missed and wanted to have them back in his life. He also had a lot of love for all his grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Every now and then remember Gene, and he will have that special little smile of his for you. God bless you all for being here. From his family who will never be the same without him. God bless you again. I will never forget Gene, he will always be in my heart. We loved you Gene and still do. ORTIZ Y PINO DE KLEVEN -- Maria Concepcion Ortiz y Pino, known as the Grande Dame of New Mexico, died in the early morning hours on September 30 from complications of pneumonia. Concha was born in the village of Galisteo in 1910, two years before New Mexico was to become the 47th state of the union. Her family has been politically active and instrumental in shaping the history of New Mexico for the past three hundred years. For almost a century, with a persona larger than life, she aided legions of people through her active involvement in both local and national politics. During her lifetime 19 New Mexico governors and six U.S. presidents, as well as countless state and national politicians knew her by her nickname, "Concha." Her political career began in 1933 when she was 21. She set out through rural New Mexico with Senator Dennis Chavez as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidential campaign reaching out to Spanish-speaking voters in rural New Mexico, aiding in his election and the "New Deal Era" which helped bring an end to the Great Depression. It was this first political experience which whetted Concha's appetite for politics leading to her lifelong advocacy for the poor and disabled. In 1941 she received the national distinction of becoming the first female Whip of a state legislature, when she was elected to that position in the 15th New Mexico state legislature. During her lifetime she served on more than 60 state and national boards. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday, October 4, 2006, at 8:00 p.m., at St. Charles Church in Albuquerque.
