LANFORD -- Ben Albin Lanford, Sr., 92, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2005, at a nursing home in Fort Collins, CO after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years. Funeral: There will be a Memorial Service in Fort Collins, after which he will be transferred for burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth, TX. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, his memory may be honored by donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 101 Summit Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76102. Mr. Lanford was born July 19, 1913 to the late George D. Lanford and Rachel Thompson Lanford in Bartonville, TX. He spent his younger years in Fort Worth, graduated from Northside High School in 1931, and married his wife of 66 years, Dellie Stanton Price in Fort Worth in 1935. Dellie preceded him in death in 2001 at the age of 87. Soon after their marriage, and brief sales positions in Fort Worth and Albuquerque, Ben entered into a career in Texas in the management of wholesale liquor and wine distributorships, with increasingly responsible positions with LeSage Company in Amarillo, Longview, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio. In 1949, when LeSage Company sold to its key employees, he became a shareholder, officer and director of its successor, Lone Star Company and was the manager of the Lone Star Company branch in Houston from 1949 to 1960. Mr. Lanford served his country as a Warrant Officer in the Coast Guard Reserves in Corpus Christi during World War II. In 1960 he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico after purchasing State Distributors, Inc., a liquor, wine and beer distributorship operating statewide in New Mexico. While building this business, Ben became increasingly involved as an investor and manager in other opportunities in real estate, banking and race tracks in New Mexico and Texas. He and Dellie established a second residence in Ruidoso in the mountains of southern New Mexico, and both loved the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of this small community. At various times during his long business career, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Santa Fe, an officer and director of Ruidoso-Sunland Corporation, a director of the Ruidoso Jockey Club, president of the Albuquerque Country Club, member of New Mexico Amigos and an advisory director of Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. He was also active as a member of the Shrine in both Houston and Albuquerque. Although he sold his core business, State Distributors, Inc. in two parts in 1984 and 1989, he continued to maintain an office in Albuquerque from which he managed his other investments until his disability from his disease required the move to Fort Collins in 2003. Ben took particular joy in his grandchildren and in educating them in sound business management. The family is most thankful to all of the wonderful "angels" in Albuquerque who watched over Ben as his disability progressed between the time Dellie passed away and the time of his move to Fort Collins. SCHUCH -- Betty M. Schuch, resident of New Mexico since 1950, succumbed to a culmination of many prolonged illnesses on October 5, 2005. She was a feisty lady, and was able to fight through many painful and debilitating events, even working part time until age 78. She was attended by her family and is survived by her five sons, Charles and wife Diana of Albuquerque, Douglas and wife Ingrid of Escondido, California, Brian of Albuquerque, Thomas of Albuquerque, and Steven of Westport, Washington. She is also survived by her sister Joan Young and husband Thomas of Ibadin, Nigeria, and sister-in law Elsie McAllister of Munster, Indiana. She has seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews. Betty was born in Chicago on December 11, 1925, and moved with her family to Los Alamos in 1950. In 1961, the family moved to Albuquerque. She loved New Mexico and its cultural diversity. She especially loved the chile, and made regular pilgrimages to Chimayo to eat and buy red chile. She also had a great appreciation for turquoise jewelry and native pottery. In her final days, she was handicapped by a breathing tube, but insisted on telling jokes and making many various comments by pointing to an alphabet board and spelling things out. (Her sons always bragged that they never knew her to miss the spelling of any word.) Her small back yard was beautifully landscaped, and she spent many happy hours tending it. She was notorious for being "warm enough," and many times refused to wear a coat in winter weather. She passed on to her sons her insistence on being independent. She always wanted to do things, if she could, without burdening others. She was politically astute, and did her best to volunteer to help her favorite candidates in their election campaigns. For the past two years, Betty resided in an assisted-living facility. She had rehabilitated herself to the point that she was scheduled to move back into her own beloved home on Monday, September 12. Unfortunately, she became very ill just four days prior to her return, and was admitted to the hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16. The family requests that any donations be directed to the American Lung Association, or to the Arthritis Foundation. French Mortuary, Inc. 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400
