FORMHALS -- James (Jim) Alexander Formhals, 51, passed away suddenly on October 18, 2004. He was born in Albuquerque in 1953, the fourth child of Oowala Rider and Clyde Hugh Formhals. Jim graduated from Valley High School in 1971 and from the University of New Mexico in 1975. Through the years he worked as a purchasing agent for UNM and later as a sales professional for American Business Interiors, New Mexico Office Furniture and Goodmans. In 1986 he married Janet Everett and they moved to San Francisco where their daughter, Mary Alixandra Formhals was born. Shortly after returning to Albuquerque in 1992, Jim began his own construction business, Construction Advisors. For many years Jim was active in the Masonic Order and in 1983 became Worshipful Master of Temple Lodge #6. During his tenure, he was instrumental in planning the construction of the new lodge located at 3801 Osuna NE. He was a member of Scottish Rite and past commander of the Council of Kadosh. He was a political activist, raising awareness as a lobbyist about the moral issues of legalized gambling, a strong advocate for family values, a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, and more recently, an active member of Hoffmantown Church. He initiated the morning prayer group, Band Of Brothers, and his spirituality was a very important and vital part of his everyday life. From it he drew much strength. He was on the Board of Governors at the Heights Family Branch YMCA where he chaired the building and grounds committee. He also found great pleasure in singing with the award winning New Mexichords barbershop chorus and traveled with them to concerts and competitions in other states. With all his many activities, both personal and professional, he was first and foremost a wonderful and devoted father, playing a very active role in the life of his daughter, Mary Alix. He took great pride in her accomplishments and enjoyed her progress as she became an experienced equestrian. Together they attended horse shows where Mary Alix competed with her Arabian horse, Aguero. Anyone who knew Jim, knew of his outgoing personality, wonderful sense of humor, and his ability to light up the world with his laughter. He was a thoughtful and dedicated friend who always took the initiative to stay in touch and let you know he cared. Many of his friendships have lasted the course of his 51 years, and he often mentioned his "good buddies" in conversation. His ability to find humor in even the most difficult of situations and to laugh at himself endeared him to all of us. He was a frequent patron of Starbucks and Flying Star (his offices, as he often called them), and you could find him there many weekday mornings, reading the paper, having his morning coffee, and bending the ear of any interested friend he happened to meet. He was full of enthusiasm about his growing construction business and looked forward to each new challenge with great expectations for himself and others. His everyday example motivated us to become better people, learning from his great capacity for love and friendship. By his infectious laughter, he reminded us not to take ourselves so seriously. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Oowala and Clyde Formhals of Albuquerque. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Alix Formhals and her mother, Janet Everett of Albuquerque; a sister, Arlene Butler of Farmington; brother, Hugh Formhals of Albuquerque; and brother and sister-in-law, Sherman and Debbie Formhals of Oklahoma City, OK; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews; and many other family members and countless friends. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Masonic Temple Lodge #6, 3801 Osuna NE, Albuquerque, NM. Jim touched our lives in so many ways, and we are heartbroken at his loss. We will miss him everyday. I believe he would want to be remembered with a silly joke, a big hug, a happy song, and a silent prayer. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Heights YMCA.
