GOODMAN -- Howard Kenneth Goodman, "Jack," was born to Charles A. Goodman and Beulah Dowda on September 21, 1923 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Jack was a brave bombardier and served our country during World War II in Europe fighting the Nazis. His years of service in the European Theatre Operation with the 15th Army Air Force 460th Bomb Group 760th Squadron earned him an Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with five Bronze Service Stars, and one Overseas Service Bar. But Jack was more than just a man or a soldier. Jack was a student of life, a renaissance man, a loving father and grandfather, a compassionate friend, a teacher, and a proprietor of stubbornness. It seems that a series of "meant-to-be" circumstances comprised Jack's wonderful life. For example, he met his sweetheart because they were neighbors before even attending college. Armed with his BS in Business, Jack wed Suzanne Payne on March 5, 1949. Jack then operated the Catfish Bay Resort on Lake Texoma and was later recalled to Air Force duty. Four beautiful children later, Jack and Suzanne moved to Albuquerque in 1962 after he received his MBA and his teaching certificate. Jack was an excellent teacher and taught science to Ernie Pyle middle school students until his retirement in 1981. Jack continued his teaching experience by volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America and was a scoutmaster in Troop #88 and later Explorer Post #88. His calling in life was teaching, and he did this every day until the day he met his wife and child in heaven. After Suzanne and their youngest daughter, Jennifer, died in an auto accident, Jack raised his sons, Charles and James, and his daughter Patty. Jack is survived by Charles, wife, Dianne and sons, Brant and Ryan; Patricia, and daughters, Kerstan and Kathryn; and James, wife, Cathy and their two daughters, Danica and Ada. Jack's sister, Pat, her husband, Floyd, and their sons, Art, Mitch, and Patrick will also miss Jack deeply. Jack's family and friends, especially Dorothy Vassallo, will miss him forever, and his absence is felt by all who loved him and who were touched by his life. Cremation has occurred. Memorial Services will be held at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 31, 2004. The time will be announced. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th ST. NW. WESTFALL -- Archie Westfall passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at age 98. Born in the New Mexico Territory to Christopher C. and Ellen Phillips Westfall on July 27, 1905, he was the oldest of nine children. He grew up on a sheep ranch in southeastern New Mexico. When he was nine years old, he was in charge of moving the sheep. The herders were Mexican nationals who did not speak English, so Archie talked to the ranchers to get permission to cross their land. At fourteen he worked in the West Texas oil fields taking care of the mules. He graduated from Dexter, NM high school in 1925 and from the University of New Mexico in 1932. While at UNM he met his future wife, Ruth I. Taylor. They were married on August 12, 1935 and spent more than fifty-five loving years in each other's company before she passed away on December 2, 1990. He played basketball at Dexter HS and at UNM. He was a member of the Student Council, Vice-President of the Junior Class, and President of the Senior Class while at UNM. During college Archie worked several on-campus jobs including managing Strong's University Book Store. After he graduated he purchased the bookstore. He continued to build the business, moving off campus in 1950 and eventually to Menaul NE where the business became known as Allied School and Office Products. He continued to be active in the business until it was sold in 1997. Archie was always active in the Albuquerque community. He was a Past Master of Albuquerque Lodge #60 AF and AM, and a member of other Masonic organizations including Ballut Abyad Temple AAONMS, York Rite, Eastern Star and the Royal Order of Jesters. He was a Past-President of the Heights Businessmen's Association and of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of the United Way and was Chairman of the City Commission in the early 1960s. He was an early member of Albuquerque Economic Development. He was a Past-President of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque. He also served on many Rotary committees and continued to enjoy his affiliation with his fellow Rotarians from his becoming a member in 1941 until his death. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Archie was a loving father and will be missed by his family and many friends. His wife Ruth, his parents, his sisters, Vivian Terry, De Bee Coffman and Bernice Allen, his brothers, Alvin, Elmo and Wayne predeceased him. Son, Robert and wife, Mary; daughters, Jean John and husband, Robert, and Sue Lancaster and husband, Tom; grandchildren Kathleen Neuber of Millstone, NJ and Christine Redd, Carrie John, Rebecca Oyler and Michael Lancaster, all of Albuquerque, survive him. The family thanks the staff of Vista Care Hospice for their help and especially thanks the staff and residents of Marler Manor-Holiday for their many kind considerations while caring for Archie.
