ARMIJO -- Louie Missing you... In Loving memory of Louie E. Armijo, Jr. October 7, 1951 - April 15, 2003 I heard the birds this morning. It made my heart smile. I haven't smiled in a while. Not a real smile. I'm not sure what that is anymore-a real smile. A year has gone by and my eyes are very different. Changed. I see things in a different light. My thoughts are always drifting away...to where we were all before...to a time that just seemed like another ordinary day. I'm not sure what that really means anymore-an ordinary day. The phone is ringing, the kids are calling, dinner needs to get made, I go through the day doing what needs to get done. My heart is aching. The tears start coming. Joy seems very distant from me. The kind of joy I thought I always had. I'm not sure I know what that is anymore-real genuine joy. Lots of people say the hurt goes away, things will get easier in time, remember the good things. I'm not sure I want the hurt to go away, ever. There is a hole in my heart. But the loneliness, the hurt, the pain, the tears, bring me to a place of evaluation. Evaluation of what we are truly living for. The hope of finding peace in Him. Eventually in hope for real genuine joy, that is shown by a real smile, by living another ordinary day... Karen Missing you every single day... Your face, your jokes, your smile... You are never forgotten and we will meet up with you soon... Your loving family

HEISER -- Elisabeth Ph Heiser, 63, died Saturday, April 10, 2004. Elisabeth was born Elisabeth Mukadingandu in what was then the Belgian Congo and is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, on June 30, 1940. The man she married in her teens later entered the diplomatic service of the new republic, and Elisabeth traveled with him to Washington, DC among other places. Upon the breakup of her marriage Elisabeth was left with eight children and not a penny of support from her ex-husband. She went to work with the national airline, using her free tickets to conduct an import-export business on the side. On the failure of the airline, she emigrated to the United States in 1988 and found work in the Washington, DC area. There she met her new husband, John Heiser, a retired professor of Ancient Philosophy who had come to the Washington area upon his retirement. Both were members of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites, and met each other at the monthly meetings of that religious order. They were married in August 1994 and moved to Albuquerque after a European honeymoon. In 1995, Elisabeth was visiting her native country and while there decided to build an orphanage for the orphan girls she saw running in the streets of the Capital. She did so, and it is still in operation. She is survived by two children who live in Belgium - Isidore and Margueritte, six who live in the US - Bernadette, Oscar, Marie-Stella, Elizabeth, Leopold and Roger. She has numerous grandchildren both in Belgium and in the US. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest, sympathizers make donations to her orphanage-Elisabeth Heiser Foundation. These contributions should be made payable to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110, with the purpose designated. WEISS -- Linda Jane Weiss, beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, girlfriend and friend to many, passed away on the Mettawee River near Granville, New York, while doing what she loved most: kayaking. Linda was born on October 15, 1973 in Washington, Pennsylvania two weeks after her family moved to Burgettstown. During her first year she had a close call with spinal meningitis, but she pulled through and went on to participate in dance and gymnastics before moving with her family to Abilene, Texas at age five. She began school and continued in gymnastics after moving to Dallas, Texas in 1983. Her ever-present interest in sports resulted in her mother, Nancy, driving Linda and the other girls on her gymnastics team to meets throughout north Texas. At age 11 Linda moved to Socorro, New Mexico and entered junior high school. Gymnastics were not available in Socorro, so Linda developed an interest in volleyball. Linda played volleyball for the Socorro Warriors and kept in contact with many members of her class of 1991. Given the opportunity, she competed with boys waterskiing at Elephant Butte and was one of the few girls to jump off the bluff into the lake. Linda, always a good student, entered New Mexico Tech in Socorro and graduated with a B.S. in biology in 1995. She continued with volleyball throughout college and developed her initial interest in kayaking. Her interest in science and her academic achievements earned her a scholarship to graduate school at The University of Vermont in Burlington where she received an M.S. in molecular biology in 1999. Her thesis, MAP kinase signal transduction regulated by gene expression and phosphorylation, was later published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Linda's enthusiasm for kayaking matured while in Vermont. She gained enough experience to qualify as an instructor and then traveled alone to Costa Rica on a kayaking adventure. She returned to Burlington to work on clinical laboratory projects in the university's Department of Medicine Immunobiology Program. Being a people person, laboratory work did not fill her needs, so she went to the Radiology Department to coordinate clinical patient trials. Again, she found she wanted more contact with patients. In 2003 she entered the Massachusetts College of Pharmacology in the Physician's Assistant program. She recently finished her course work and was planning to do her rotational internships this year. Linda's love for adventure and kayaking took her to Ecuador and Peru. She felt quite proud of being one of the first women to run the Taureau rapids in Quebec. Her peers recognized her as one the most talented woman paddlers in the northeast. Her last run was on the Mettawee River near Glens Falls, NY. As she traversed the 15-foot falls, she and her boat became pinned in the rocks. Her friends and emergency personnel were not able to help her. The river took her on April 10, 2004. Linda is survived by parents, Bill and Nancy Weiss of Socorro, NM; sister, Wendy Weiss and Robert Mace of Austin, TX; brother, Jason Weiss of Socorro, NM; grandmother, Gladys Flora of Savannah, MO; beloved boyfriend, John Guerriere of Shelburne, VT; aunt, Mary Maupin of Skidmore, MO; uncle, and aunt, John and Judy Flora of Bolckow, MO; aunt, Sally Renfree of Boulder, CO; aunt, Sandy del Santos of San Antonio, TX; uncle, Bob Weiss of Denver, CO; uncle and aunt, Bob Morrison and the late Susan Morrison of San Antonio, TX; 16 cousins; and many, many friends. Visitation will be at Steadman-Hall Funeral Home on Friday, April 16, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Services will be at the First Presbyterian Church (304 McCutcheon Avenue) conducted by Pastor Phil Preston on Saturday, April 17, 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers are Jason Weiss, Dr. John Gurriere, Robert Mace, Reid Morrison, Tony Flora, Brian Flora all family members. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to American Whitewater (www.americanwhitewater.org; 1424 Fenwick Lane, Silver Spring, MD 20910). "My awe and respect to rivers moving fast, gracefully, with power and excitement, offering challenges and beauty, providing the path that takes me to the place I want to be." -from the acknowledgments in Linda's thesis.
