Anders -- Donna Anders, 44, resident of Albuquerque, athlete and Army veteran, died Sunday, December 8, 2002, when her generous and caring heart stopped while she was reading on her front porch. She is survived by her three cats, Angel, Petey and Jazz; and two dogs, Billy and Ellen; and a host of friends and neighbors she considered family. Born Donna Anderson in Williamsburg, Va., in 1958, she spent her elementary school years in California and went to high school in Las Cruces, NM. She moved to Albuquerque where she worked as a florist and was an outfielder for the champion fastpitch softball team, the Jokers, from 1977 through the early 1980's. Showing the commitment to service that was the touchstone of her life, she joined the National Guard as a medic in 1977 and made top scores on her physical training tests. Her life changed when her unit, the 744th Med Detachment, 111th Brigade, was called to the February 1980 New Mexico State Prison riot,"the most violent prison riot in the history of the United States". In the mutilations and murders, 33 inmates died, hundreds of prisoners were injured and dozens of guards were held hostage and tortured. Donna witnessed much of the carnage and treated dozens of the victims. She battled with post-traumatic stress disorder for the rest of her life, writing about it in her book,"The Road Back From Hell: A Medic's Version of PTSD and Recovery." She was working on a second PTSD book before her death. Donna left the guard in September of 1980, but joined the 351st Army Reserve Hospital and was honorably discharged in 1986. PTSD took its toll on her health. In 1987, after thorough examinations by the Veteran's Administration, Donna and several other veterans of the prison riot received full disability benefits, which were rescinded in 2002. Suffering from chronic pain, fibromyialga and other health problems, Donna used what she learned in treating her ailments to help anyone else who had the same diseases. When her health allowed, Donna enjoyed the open road on her Yamaha 1100cc V Star and helped kids with baseball and soccer. This fall she drove to Socorro to give a clinic to a nine-year-old friend's team. She received a bachelor's degree in special education from UNM in 1992 where she was inducted to the Golden Key Honor society and later took a certificate in alcohol and substance abuse counseling. While working at Cleveland Middle School she earned Masters in Counseling from Webster University in 1996. Donna loved beauty and created a blooming, xeric oasis in her yard, offering food and sanctuary to birds, her animals and her friends. She built a pottery studio making adobe house bird feeders and small but powerful sculptures. A number of boy scouts earned pottery badges as she taught them to mold and throw their first pots. Whatever circle she moved in, she served in. In the groups she belonged to, she was a one-woman welcoming committee. She was on the school Safety Patrol in third grade and was recently awarded for her contributions to the VA Hospital. A Memorial Service is planned from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2002 at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd N.E., with her friend, the Rev. Pat Eckart officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Donna's memory to the charity of your choice. Please bring memories to share. For more information, call Nance Crow 265-8113.
