Bird -- John Aaron Bird, 81, died October 1 at his Albuquerque home. He was born July 12, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan. Jake, as his friends called him, was a man of integrity and fierce loyalties. He was a hobbyist astronomer, an armchair philosopher, a devoted father who taught his children to play chess, then let them beat him at it. After Pearl Harbor, Jake, who'd wanted to fly since he'd seen Lindbergh cross the Atlantic, joined the Army Air Corps. He was stationed in Europe and flew more than 50 missions as a navigator-bombardier. After the war, he married Colista McCabe, an Army nurse he'd met at a barn dance in North Africa, and they started a family in Michigan. Jake worked as a newsman and a parts dealer for Chrysler before being recalled to the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He flew another 50 missions with the 6091st Reconnaissance Squadron. He was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary efforts during a Cold War flight into Russian airspace. Even after the Cold War ended and state secrets were told, he refused to describe his heroic feat -"I took the oath," he'd say. After he retired as a lieutenant colonel, Jake earned a Ph.D. from UNM and began a new career as a counselor, helping alcoholics and troubled children. Jake was proud of his achievements, but he was proudest of his 54 years of marriage to his wife Colista, and of his children; son, John and wife, Jennifer Bird of Austin, Texas; daughter, Sarah Bird, husband, George Jones and their son, Gabriel of Austin; daughter, Martha Bird of Albuquerque; son, Tom Bird, wife, Brooke Tully and their son, Aaron of Albuquerque; son, Steven Bird, wife, Ruth Ellen Thomson and their daughter, Colista Rose of Lafayette, Colo.; and daughter, Kay Bird and husband, Dan Swiss of Santa Fe. He also is survived by brothers, George Bird of Clarkson, Mich. and Bob Bird of Cumming, Ga.; sister, Joanne Bunge of Southfield, Mich., and by countless memories. A memorial service was held at the family home. Instead of flowers, please consider contributions to the Lodestar Planetarium, 1801 Mountain NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104; Attn: David Beining.

Heckl -- Tyler J. Heckl, age 12, passed away unexpectedly on October 10, 2001. Tyler was born happy and spent every moment of his 12 years smiling. He was, as his best friend Luke says, "the definition of philosophy," a true thinker and an old soul who never had a bad day. His laugh, a deep hearty chorus, was one of his most distinct qualities, and will be heard by his loved ones forever. Survivors include his parents, Dr. Frank and Dr. Vicki Heckl of Corrales, NM; sisters, Emily Heckl and Allison Heckl, both of Corrales, NM; maternal grandfather, Dr. Vernon Perrigo of Edina, MN; paternal grandfather, Frank Heckl of Post Falls, ID; aunts, Yvonne Mendleson of Pennsylvania and Laura Richmond of Novato, CA; uncle, Mark Heckl of LaMesa, CA and cousins, Altie, Andy, Holly, Zach, Steven, Kayla, Matt and Alissa. Music was a big part of Tyler's life. He once performed with the Santa Fe Opera, and especially loved singing in the chorus at Manzano Day School and Albuquerque Academy. He wanted to be a piano man like Billy Joel. Together with his family, he shared a passion for sports, playing soccer, basketball, baseball, swimming, tennis, and was particularly enjoying being on the 7th/8th grade football team at Albuquerque Academy with his great friends Charlie and Evan. Tyler also had a natural golf swing and was his parents' favorite golfing partner. Tyler loved nature, especially the bosque surrounding his home. His favorite place to be, away from home, was enveloped in the waves at any beach from La Jolla to Kona. When Ty came home from school, you could find him playing Nintendo, with Boo on his lap, Risa at his side, and Benji at his feet. On weekends, he loved to have his best friends over to play "Worms Armageddon" and basketball and to eat Village pizza and Grandpa's pancakes. He loved being with his friends. Tyler will be remembered by everyone he ever met, a list too numerous to mention or to thank. He gave his heart and soul in everything he did and to everyone he knew. We think Tyler had an extraordinary impact on the people in his life. He made us all smarter, stronger and better. From now on, we will try to live our lives the way we know he would have lived his - embracing every second of every day, and giving love to everyone and everything. He was "the one." A Time of Remembrance will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2001 at Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE. Memorial Services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Simms Auditorium on the campus of Albuquerque Academy, 6400 Wyoming Blvd NE with Pastor John Thurmond officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Animal Humane Society. Arrangements by Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE 821-0010.

Williams -- Bernice Verta Lloyd Williams was born in Minto, New Brunswick, Canada on February 12th, 1921. She moved a few miles north to Chipman when she was quite small, and she used to like to say she "helped" her father build their house. She was the eldest of seven and, as a child, ran everywhere she went. She had an imaginary playmate as a youngster but hers was not a child, it was a little deer. She spoke of walking through the woods with this small companion and feeling content in its company. She graduated from high school in Chipman and went to work teaching school and working at Eaton's in St. John. When the war broke out for Canada, she, like so many of the young women in Canada, joined the service for two years. She chose the Royal Canadian Navy because she loved that uniform the best and was especially enamoured with the hats. Although she was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia; St. Hyacinth, Quebec; and at Sydney Park in British Columbia, she wanted to see new places. She was a fearless adventurer. She took a train alone from Maritime Canada all the way across Canada to British Columbia. From there she went to see California and the glamour of Hollywood. As the war was ending, she met and married an American serviceman and from there she saw the world. With her husband and two children, she lived in Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Thailand, and all over the United States. The foreign ports and cities she visited were many. She made sure wherever she was that her children saw everything of significant historical, artistic, spiritual, or social importance. She had a way of quickly making home wherever the family would find itself, whether it was a hotel room in Paris at Christmas, or a BOQ in Japan at Thanksgiving. Where Mother was, there was home. Mother was a remarkable person, a person with more than just physical beauty. A woman with great intellect and wit, leadership and personality, humour and patience; she was loved by many who encountered her for her kindness and consideration. She was a free and far thinker who protested social ills before it was fashionable and had the courage to do so at times and in places where her opinions might not be popular. She did this with grace and gentle demeanor. She looked for ways to help others in need and on more than one occasion would take a hungry person off the street to a restaurant to eat. She was always digging on the dashboard of the car or in her purse for money to give to people on street corners who held signs of personal need. She did not seem to feel a need to judge whether their cause was legitimate or not. She felt if they were doing what they were doing, they were in need. Those who are left to celebrate my mother's life include her beloved children Harold Lloyd Williams of Los Lunas and Betsy L. Williams, PhD of Albuquerque; sisters Phyllis Harding and Yvonne Chase of New Brunswick, Canada; brother Wayne Lloyd of Ontario, Canada; brother Terrence Lloyd and his wife Dell of Alberta, Canada; and many other dear friends and family across Canada and the United States. You are loved, Mother dear, and you are profoundly missed. But you are free of pain and suffering and we will be celebrating your life for the rest of ours. We are blessed by the many ways you touched us. Godspeed, Mum. Please wear bright colors to join us in celebrating this beloved person's life on October 19th at 6:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to an organization dedicated to the care and placement of animals.
