Ballard -- Douglas W. Ballard , born October 4,1922, a well-known Southwestern watercolorist and Veteran of four decades of nuclear weapons engineering, died suddenly August 29, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Judge Karen Ballard Molzen of Las Cruces; three grandchildren, Jessica Molzen of Albuquerque and Justin and Kristin Ballard; and daughter-in-law, Susan Ballard, all of Longmont CO. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Ballard. Other survivors are his brothers, W.J. Ballard, Jr., and his wife, Bebe of Selma AL and Richard Ballard of Livermore CA and nephews Perry Ballard, Kelly and Kevin White. A resident of Albuquerque since 1949, Doug was born in Selma, Alabama. While attending engineering school at Auburn University, his ROTC unit was called into combat engineering service in March 1943 where he was selected for specialized training at City College of NY and then assigned in 1944 to the US Army Special Engineering Detachment for the Manhattan A-Bomb Project at Oak Ridge where he served as a process engineer at the Y-12 Plant where he met his future wife, Patsye Bailey. Transferred in 1945 to the Special Engineering Detachment Unit at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, he served as a supervisor of plutonium metallurgy. Doug and Pat were married following his discharge from the service in 1946. They established residence at Los Alamos to work until 1948. He obtained BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering at UNM. From 1950 until his retirement in 1983, he worked in a variety of engineering and supervisory assignments at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. Doug served on national and international committees and as National President of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. He was also a Past-President of the Sandia Lab Federal Credit Union and was active for many years in Sombra Del Monte Christian Church and the Rotary Club of Albuquerque. Doug started painting late in his life and developed a strong following as a Southwestern Watercolorist whose work is widely held in private and corporate collections. With fellow artist and wife of 56 years, Doug and Pat shared their love of people, art and life together. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service is planned for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Sombra del Monte Christian Church, 2528 Utah NE. Immediately following the service the family will receive friends at the family home. Should friends desire, a contribution may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Albuquerque Rotary Club Foundation, PO Box 3807, 87190 for the Children's Fantasy Garden. Bernauer -- Louis J. Bernauer joined our Lord on Friday, August 31, 2001 at the age of 70. He was a former resident of Albuquerque; however, he resided in Los Lunas. Louis especially loved winters because it allowed him to build fires in his wood stoves and go snowmobiling. He also enjoyed the mountains and building homes for his company. He was preceded in death by his parents; Joseph and Katie Bernauer; his brother; and his sister. Louis is survived by his children; Joe of Carlsbad, Karen Galan and her husband, Adrian of Hawaii, Steve and his wife, Karen of Los Lunas, Kathy Mustain and her husband, James of Lawton, OK, and Louie and his wife, Corina of Rio Rancho; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; his dear friend and companion; Theresa R. Martinez of Sacramento, CA; two sisters, Sister Barbara of Muenster, TX, Evelyn Nachtman and her husband, Bernard of Boynton Beach, Florida; and one brother, Frank of Muenster, TX. A Visitation will be held on Monday, 5:30 p.m. in the Romero Funeral Home Chapel with a Rosary following at 6:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will take place in the Jemez Mountains on Highway 126, between mile marker 13 & 14, Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 12:00 p.m. Romero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Candelaria -- Mr. Eddy (Pito) Candelaria, 60, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on September 1, 2001. Mr. Candelaria is survived by his mother, Julia Garcia; three sisters, Pita Candelaria, Teresa Torres and husband, Enrique, and Frances Candelaria; one aunt, Candy Apodaca; two nephews, Bobby Marquez and Enrique Torres III; two nieces, Angela Torres and Christina Torres; two cousins, Amanda Marquez, and Anthony Marquez; special friends, Garrito Moya, Shorty Chavez, and Rabs; and many other cousins and friends. A visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, 1000 Old Coors Dr. SW, with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Final visitation will be Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel with a Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m., Pastor Pablo Lucero officiating. Garcia -- Mary Rita Garcia, 53, beloved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister was called home to be with the Lord our Savior, on Friday, August 31, 2001. Mary was born in Torreon, NM to the late Melecor and Conception Chavez; she was a resident of Albuquerque; and a parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Daniel Garcia of the family home; her two children, Alfredo Garcia and wife Felicia; and Michelle Garcia both of Albuquerque; her seven precious grandchildren, Renee Sanchez, Evelyn Sanchez, Daniel Garcia, David Valenzuela, Lisa Marie Garcia, Vanessa Garcia and Anthony Garcia. She is also survived by her brothers, Joe Chavez, Elefego Chavez, Gabriel Chavez, Gilbert Chavez, Cecil Chavez, Feliciano Chavez, and Melecor Chavez, Jr.; her sisters, Jenny Otero, Rose Trujillo, Candie Garcia, Eulia Gutierrez, Peggy Pohl, and Sylvia Castillo; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Hertz -- Mel Hertz, 63, a resident of Albuquerque for 30 years, died Friday, August 31, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Hertz of the family home; sons, Brian Hertz and wife, Terry of Frisco, TX, and Joseph Hertz of Irving, TX; three grandchildren, Austin, Nathan and Logan Hertz of Frisco, TX; and sister, Marilyn Hertz of Montana. Melvin was a former board member of the Lobo Club. He received his BBA at the University of Washington and his MBA from Thunderbird Institute in Phoenix. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, September 5, 2001, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Sophie Gurule reciting. Kanesta -- Henry R. Kanesta, 38, went home to the Lord on August 28, 2001 in Denver, CO. Henry was born in Albuquerque, NM on March 4, 1963. He is survived by his parents, Andrew and Eleanore B. Kanesta; brothers, Michael, Maurice, Timmy and Woody; sisters, Elaine, Pauline, Elvira, Eleanore R. and Arlinda. Henry will be deeply missed by his loving family. Visitations will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2001 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the 8th Street Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. Lovato -- Donaciano Librado Lovato Sr., 83, of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, August 29, 2001. Donaciano is preceded in death by his son, Joseph Alfred Lovato. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fabiola Francis Lovato; sister, Christina Tafoya; daughters, Elizabeth King and Theresa Blea; sons, Don Lovato Jr., Peter Lovato and Joseph Anthony Lovato; and three generations of grandchildren. Donaciano was a member of the Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, a WWII Veteran and local trucker. A Rosary for Donaciano will be recited on Wednesday evening, September 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Fitzgerald and Son's Chapel, 3113 Carlisle N.E. Mass will be celebrated the following day on Thursday morning at 10.00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Church. Burial Services at the Santa Fe National Cemetery will be announced at a later date. Donaciano was a loving father and husband. His strength, love and special smile will always be with us.

Nowak -- Dorothy"Dot" Nowak, nee Zitz, age 82, of Albuquerque, NM, formerly of Chicago, IL, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2001. She was the beloved wife of the late Florian Nowak; loving mother of Gale (Kenneth) Flack of Albuquerque, NM and Thomas (Monique) Nowak of Homewood, IL; dearest grandmother of Christopher and Corey Flack of Albuquerque, NM, Jennifer (Rick) Sweeney of Mokena, IL., Jaime (Jeremy) Kerr of Chicago, Julie (Clayton) Houston of Burbank, IL, and Aleksandr and Kyle Nowak of Homewood, IL; dearest great-grandmother of six; cherished sister, sister-in-law, cousin and aunt who shall fondly be remembered. Prior to retiring to the southwestern United States, she was a Purchasing Agent for the City of Chicago. Patrick -- 1st Lieutenant Matthew John Patrick. On August 27, 2001, 1st Lieutenant Matthew John Patrick,"slipped the surely bonds of earth" to join the great spirit and fly the right seat. Born June 13, 1976, at Travis AFB, CA., Matt was destined to serve his country in the United States Air Force. A graduate of Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, NM in 1994, Matt entered the USAF Academy Preparatory School and then entered the United States Air Force Academy Class 1999, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Participating in soccer at an intercollegiate level while at the academy, Matt dreamed of leaving the academy to earn his pilot wings. On June 2, 1999, Matt graduated from the academy and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served as executive officer for 2nd Operations Group, 2nd Bomb Wing Barksdale AFB, IA., where he was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for his exemplary service. He left Barksdale in May of 2000 to join UPT Class 01-09 at Columbus AFB, MS., where he mastered the Air Forces T-37B twin-engine jet trainer. He then moved to Corpus Christi Naval Air Station in November of 2000 where he further increased and proved his aeronautical proficiency in the TC-12 twin-engine turboprop trainer (King Air 200). He completed all Air Force and Navy requirements to become a Rated Air Force Pilot on June 22, 2001, just 20 days after pinning on his new rank of 1st Lieutenant. Matt then flew the Navy's C-12 for Training Wing Four in Corpus Christi, while awaiting upgrade training for the HC-130, which he would fly with the New York Air National Guard, Long Island, New York. Matt is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Patrick of Denver, CO; his parents, Cdr. Darl Patrick, USN (ret.) and former Navy Lt. Terry Patrick of Albuquerque, NM; and sister, Catherine Moore of Swissville, PA. All those who knew Matt are deeply sorrowed by his tragic loss. Those of us honored enough to fly with Matt would rather believe that he did not die, but rather, passed on to a new plane. Family invites friends to an open viewing at Swan Law Funeral Home, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs CO. Services will be held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO., Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 10:00 hours. Rinehart -- Wilfred A. Rinehart, 93, died on August 22, 2001. Wil is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Alice; son-in-law, Farrell (Sherry) Perdreauville; and granddaughter, Amy (Spencer) Eason; and grandson, Joseph (Amy) Perdreauville. Wil spent much of his life in Albuquerque managing motels and was highly involved in several local lodges including the Knight Masons, the Shiners, Zia Daylight Lodge #77, and the Knight Templar. Rushing -- Margaret G. Rushing, 81, died Friday, August 31, 2001. She was born in Embudo, New Mexico on September 27, 1919. Margaret was the sixth of ten children and was a life long resident of New Mexico. She served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She was a faithful homemaker and mother. Margaret was an avid member of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church and Disabled American Veterans. She is survived by her children, D. Daniel Rushing of Albuquerque, Charles Keith Rushing an wife, Diana, of Anchorage, AK, Donna Lynn Rushing of Coeur D'Alene, ID, Edward Jeffery D. Rushing of Mesa, AZ and Pamela Jeanne Cummins-Krupp of Mesa, AZ; sisters, Bessie Marie Brito and husband, Rudy of San Francisco, CA and Salina Emma Pasillas and husband, Manuel, of Fresno, CA; fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Sanchez -- Laurencita (Laura) M., age 86, a life-long resident of Albuquerque, died August 31, 2001. She is preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Adolfo E. Sanchez who died in 1965; her parents, Epifano Mares, Sr., who died in 1973 and her mother, Bruna V. Mares who died in 1978 and her brothers; Joe V. Mares who died in 1998 and Ciprano V. Mares. She is survived by her loving companion of 35 years, Leonardo B. Chavez and his family of Albuquerque; two children; Sally Kehl and husband, Roger of Las Vegas, NV, and Wanda Sanchez Lerke and husband, Michael of Tijeras, NM; one sister, Bertha Moya and husband, Richard C., Albuquerque NM; two brothers, Epifanio Mares Jr., and wife, Kate, Belen, NM, and Frank V. Mares, Albuquerque, NM. She is also survived by; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren, and her extended family at Paloma Blanca and countless other friends. Mrs. Sanchez was a housekeeper for Presbyterian Hospital for approximately 15 years. She loved Casinos, slot machines, fishing and game shows. A memorial service will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at The Chapel of Sandia, Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd, NE, Albuquerque, NM. Smith -- Herbert H."Smitty" Smith, 84, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died on Friday, August 30, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Edith S. Smith of Albuquerque; sons, Richard A. Smith and wife, Carolyn of Scottdale, AZ and Herb H. Smith Jr. and wife, Charlotte of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Rachelle A. Smith, Regan A. Smith and Loren A. Wulf -- (Ron) Ronald Owen Wulf, 35, spiritually left us to live with the Lord on Sunday, August 26, 2001, after a fatal car accident. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, 1613 Arizona NE, with Pastor J. Curtis Goldman officiating. Ron was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Wulf; his grandfather, Casper Wulf; grandparents, Wilfred and Bernice Werner; and grand-uncle, Maurice Wulf. Ron is survived by his parents, Ernest and Shirley Wulf; brother, Randy Wulf of Albuquerque, NM; grandparents, Harold and Jeanne O'Neill of Texas; his aunt and uncle, Lucille and Glenn Randall, and their three children; cousins, Jim, Marge and Mary of Iowa; and his great-aunt, Thelma Wulf, and daughter, Maurine Wulf, of Minnesota.
