Atencio -- Scott Atencio passed away suddenly in Waco, Texas. He was 26 years old. He is survived by his parents, Dale and Rosemary Atencio, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; sister, Amy Atencio; and brother, Thomas Atencio. Surviving Albuquerque, New Mexico relatives include his grandmother, Sue Atencio; his Godparents, Neil and Sara Atencio and family; aunt, Janice Montoya, husband, Ernie and family, aunt Debbie Bachicha, husband, Claudio and family. A Eucharist Memorial Service will be be held at 9:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 1, 2001 at San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church in Old Town. Augustine -- Elise F. Augustine, 89, of Las Cruces, NM passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at Opal Spiller's Guest Home. Mrs. Augustine was born April 26, 1912 in El Paso, TX to William and Elise Williams Favrot. She was a resident of Las Cruces for 87 years, where she was a secretary for the Farm Bureau prior to her retirement. She was a 4-H Leader, a tremendous homemaker and a good farmer. She coached a mounted horseback square dance club called the Thunderbirds for many years. Mrs. Augustine is survived by her husband, John L. Augustine of the family home; her daughter, Peggy Bogart and husband, Douglas of Las Cruces; son, Dr. John L. Augustine III and wife, Dianna of Poway, CA; her sister, Margaret Favrot of Las Cruces; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 1, 2001 at Holy Cross Church with Monsignor John Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers for the Services will be Ed Chagnot, Harold Foreman, Joe Galemore, Bill Crawford, Carl Faubion, and Bob Porter. Ballard -- Douglas W. Ballard, born Oct 4, 1922, a well-known Southwestern watercolorist and Veteran of four decades of nuclear weapons engineering, died suddenly August 29, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Judge Karen Ballard Molzen of Las Cruces; three grandchildren, Jessica Molzen of Albuquerque and Justin and Kristin Ballard; and daughter-in-law, Susan Ballard, all of Longmont CO. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Ballard. Other survivors are his brothers, W.J. Ballard, Jr., and his wife, Bebe of Selma AL and Richard Ballard of Livermore CA and nephews Perry Ballard, Kelly and Kevin White. A resident of Albuquerque since 1949, Doug was born in Selma, Alabama. While attending engineering school at Auburn University, his ROTC unit was called into combat engineering service in March 1943 where he was selected for specialized training at City College of NY and then assigned in 1944 to the US Army Special Engineering Detachment for the Manhattan A-Bomb Project at Oak Ridge where he served as a process engineer at the Y-12 Plant where he met his future wife, Patsye Bailey. Transferred in 1945 to the Special Engineering Detachment Unit at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, he served as a supervisor of plutonium metallurgy. Doug and Pat were married following his discharge from the service in 1946. They established residence at Los Alamos to work until 1948. He obtained BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering at UNM. From 1950 until his retirement in 1983, he worked in a variety of engineering and supervisory assignments at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. Doug served on national and international committees and as National President of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. He was also a Past-President of the Sandia Lab Federal Credit Union and was active for many years in Sombra Del Monte Christian Church and the Rotary Club of Albuquerque. Doug started painting late in his life and developed a strong following as a Southwestern Watercolorist whose work is widely held in private and corporate collections. With fellow artist and wife of 56 years, Doug and Pat shared their love of people, art and life together. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service is planned for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Sombra del Monte Christian Church, 2528 Utah NE. Immediately following the service the family will receive friends at the family home. Should friends desire, a contribution may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Albuquerque Rotary Club Foundation, PO Box 3807, 87190 for the Children's Fantasy Garden. Day -- Michael M. Day, 58, reached for the Lord's hand on Saturday, August 25, 2001 and was taken home to heaven. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Patricia; his son, Matthew and wife, Lisa; two grandchildren, Austin and Bria; along with two sisters and one brother. Mike was born in Riverside, California in 1943 and moved to Albuquerque in 1973, where he lived the rest of his life. Mike was a faithful and dedicated employee of Albuquerque Mail Service for 18 years. A Memorial Service will be held at the family home Saturday, September 1, 2001. Flint -- SMSgt. John William Flint, USAF (ret.), 53, a 20-year resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, August 29, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Corrine D. Flint of Albuquerque; son, John P. Flint and wife Paulette of Denver, CO; stepchildren, Cathy Herrera and husband, Paul, Jimmy Griego, and Rudy Griego; parents, Phillip and Betty Flint of Roseville, CA; brother, Phillip D. Flint and wife Chris of Newalla, OK, and 9 grandchildren. Mr. Flint served in the United States Air Force from which he retired in 1985. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and son, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2001 at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Gonzales -- Luis (Louie) M. Gonzales, 75, beloved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather was called home to be with the Lord our Savior, Monday, August 27, 2001. Louie was a lifelong resident Albuquerque and a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Louie retired from Cremaland Dairies after 22 years of loyal service; he was a member of the Teamsters Union and of the Fraternal Order of Police. Louie was loved very much by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Suzanna Gonzales. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, June Gonzales of the family home; his children, Ruth C. Woods of Albuquerque, Victor Michael Gonzales of Rio Rancho, Barbara A. Fanning and husband, Tom, Lorraine Wright and husband, David both of Albuquerque, Emmett Gonzales and wife, Ramona of Texas; his precious grandchildren, Linda Gruber, Jason Woods, Dax Gonzales and wife, Jen, Victoria Gonzales, Samantha L. Madrid and husband, Tommy Jr., Luis Wright and Salina Rodriguez, June Wright, Richard Gonzales, Adam Gonzales, and Victor E. Gonzales; great-grandchildren, Heather Gruber, Melanie Gruber, Mariah Madrid, Lucas Rodriguez-Wright, and Dax Gonzales, II; and numerous other relatives and friends. Jr. -- John A. Adams, Jr., longtime resident of Jemez Springs and Rio Rancho, passed away August 25, 2001. He was born in Albuquerque March 27, 1915, to John A. Adams and Helen Belle Shields. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucille; and three children, Tom Adams and wife, Pat of Missoula, Montana, John A. Adams III of Albany, Georgia, and devoted daughter, Lucille Adams Dillon, and John Dillon of Taos, NM. He is survived by two brothers, Paul Adams of Jemez Springs, and Fred Adams of Albuquerque. Additional survivors include two grandchildren, Chris Adams and wife, Korina, Kathy Adams, their mother, Frocene; and three great-grandchildren, Sloane, Mackenzie, and Debra Schock and son. John spent his career as a civil engineer with 39 years of service in the U.S. Forest Service. He was a lifetime conservationist. He was a lifetime member of the Jemez Community Presbyterian Church, Jemez Springs, NM, which was founded by his grandfather, Rev. John M. Shields. He was an American Society of Civil Engineers, awarded Fellow and Lifetime Member of Elks Lodge #461. He also served in the Army Corps of Engineers and the Army Reserve. A Memorial Service will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Jemez Springs, NM on Saturday, September 1, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Presbyterian Church in Jemez Springs.

Keys -- Elsie Rebecca Pullen Keys, 86, born in Randolph County, AL on October 23, 1914 and a resident of Albuquerque since 1989, died Wednesday, August 29, 2001. Elsie, a truly gifted cook, seamstress and gardener is survived by her daughter, Judith Ann and husband, Lloyd Strosnider of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Jenny Farrell of Nashville, TN and Ryley Farrell of Phoenix, AZ; sisters, Juanita Stone and husband, Royce and family, Tera Burt and husband, Gordon and family, RťElla Mountain and husband, Rodney and daughter; and brother, Jesse Pullen and wife, Bea and family, as well as Agnes Nunn and family, all of Alabama. Surviving in Albuquerque and Santa Fe are nephews, Mike Pickard and Griffin Pickard and wife, Katy and family. In South Carolina, Bill and Ann Keys and family survive Elsie. Dear extended family members are Mikell and Sherman Freelin and children, Jodi and Tim Strosnider and family, Lorraine and Pat Strosnider and family, Molly and Bob Lesch and family, Leigh Wright and family, and Richard Rede. Many dear friends in Henagar, AL, as well as those in Tennessee, all remained daily in her thoughts and prayers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Brady Keys; her son, William M. Keys; her parents, Lucy and Riley Pullen; step-mother, Dea; three sisters, Mattie Bell, Eula and Fay; and brothers, William and Kermit. Elsie was a member of the Methodist Church in Henagar, AL and also the Eastern Star. She leaves with us beautiful quilts, recipes, and memories. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 1, 2001, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, AL. Manning -- Ernest L. Manning, age 86, passed away Wednesday evening, August 29, 2001 at a local hospital in Albuquerque. He was born May 26, 1915 in Blacksburg, SC. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ida Z. Manning; daughter, Elaine Russell and husband, Bob; grandson, Michael Van Sickler and wife, Sabrina; granddaughter, Kimberly Wolfe and husband, Jody; Glen Russell, Ron Russell; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Martin and Brittany Wolfe, Kaylee Van Sickler, Jasmine and Ava Russell; also many nieces and nephews. Ernest was a member of the Army Air Force from July 18, 1941 to November 27, 1945. He was a member of the 55th BMBDR training squadron. He was Crew Chief on B-18?s, AT-11s and B29s. He was employed by Sandia Corp as a layout operator and retired in 1973. He loved to fish and join his friends on their frequent treasure seeking trips from the Palo Duro Senior Citizens Center. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge all the members of the nursing staff and physicians of Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice Program for their compassion and support during this difficult time. A Rosary will be recited Friday, August 31, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in the Palm Chapel of the Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. S.E. Sherman -- Frederick L. Sherman 83, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico for 18 years died in his home unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on Tuesday, August 28, 2001, just five months after losing his beloved wife of 61 years. He was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts on November 25, 1917. He is survived by his son, Dr. Frederick C. Sherman and wife, Sam of Albuquerque; daughter, Susan E. Sherman of Philadelphia; and grandchildren, Dr. Kristen K. Sherman of San Francisco, F. James Sherman of London, N. Jennifer Rosenberg of Boston, and Sarah E. Rosenberg of San Diego. He graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 1939 with degrees in both mechanical and electrical engineering. In 1940, he married Dorothy E. Sherman and raised his family in both Taunton, MA and Cranston, RI. He worked for General Electric during World War II and later for Gorham Silver and Texas Instruments where he designed and built nuclear cores for Oak Ridge Laboratory and nuclear submarines. He was an avid outdoors man enjoying hiking, biking, camping and fishing. Following his retirement he traveled extensively in this country. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2001, 9:00 a.m. at French Mortuary, Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Road, NW (3 blocks North of Paseo Del Norte) with Rev. Stewart -- Forrest Kyle Stewart, Jr. 49, a lifelong resident of the Albuquerque area, passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2001. Forrest was born March 18, 1952 the son of Forrest Kyle and Ina Jane Kreuch Stewart, Sr. in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his father, Forrest Kyle Stewart, Sr. Forrest is survived by his mother, Ina J. Stewart; one brother, Eric Stewart and his wife, Donna; their daughter, Jennifer; he is survived by his six children, daughter, Tanya Drummond and her husband, Justin and their children, Elise and Ethan; his son, Forrest Kyle Stewart III and his wife, Lisa; his son, Daniel Stewart and his wife, Lindsey; his daughter, Shaylynn Moore and her husband, Adam; his daughter, Amanda Stewart and their mother, Marilyn; his son, Ian Stewart and his mother, Michelle. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 1, 2001 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Montano Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1100 Montano Rd. Vise -- James "Jim" Vise, 65, a long time resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, August 26, 2001. He is survived by his best friend, Alex A. Lovato of Albuquerque, NM; sister, Ruth E. Vise, of Santa Teresa, NM; niece, April Vise, of Las Cruces; numerous cousins; and friends in Albuquerque and Los Alamos. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Vise, Sr. and Lupe Vise and brother, Jesse Vise, Jr. Mr. Vise was a graduate of Western High School and New Mexico Western College in Silver City, NM. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Heidelburg, Germany. He worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for several years. Mr. Vise was a lover of animals and contributed to various organizations protecting animals. White -- Robert W. White, Sr., 67, a resident of Albuquerque for 23 years, beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and friend, died Wednesday, August 29, 2001. He spent his childhood growing up in New London, CT with three brothers and one sister. Mr. White proudly served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 25 years. Also a War Veteran, he fought for our country in Korea and Vietnam. His travel in the military led him and his family to reside in France, Germany and various Army bases throughout the United States. Upon his retirement from the military, he worked for the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy as Division Manager for 17 years. He was married for 38 years to Odette Barthelemy until her death in 1995; they had three children and one grandchild. Mr. White remarried in 1997 to Ruth Bolton; she has two children and three grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Albuquerque; sons, Robert Jr. of Dallas, TX and Jimmy of La Habra, CA; daughter, Beatrice; granddaughter, Rachel; step-daughters, Paulette and Jennifer; and step-grandchildren, Nicole, Alex and Dennis, all of Albuquerque. Services will be held Saturday, 1:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Pastor Lemuel M. Boyles officiating. Wimmer -- Charles "Chuck" Wimmer, 71, died August 25, 2001 at Nathan Adelson Hospice-West in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born August 15, 1930, in Bayard, NE. An Army Veteran of the Korean War, he was a retired machine shop foreman at the Nevada Test Site, a 25-year resident of Las Vegas and a member of Disabled American Veterans. He moved to Las Vegas in the late 1970's, after having worked at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque for many years. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Georgie; and daughter, Cathy Sweet and husband, Rob, all of Las Vegas; sons, Charles and wife, Kathleen, of Parker, Colo.; Kenneth and wife, Kathy, and Cameron"Scott" and wife, Sheley, of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother, James of Mitchell, Neb.; sisters, Betty Stufft of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Charlene Heinrichs of Eureka, S.D.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A loving husband, father, and granddad, he will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. His wife, children, and grandchildren were at his side the final week of his life, while he was in the care of wonderful hospice workers. The family requests memorial donations be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice, 4141 Swenson St., Las Vegas, NV 89119. Memorial Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Palm Mortuary-Cheyenne followed by burial at Palm Memorial Park-Northwest.
