Banner -- Helen E. Banner, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, died Sunday, September 17, 2000. She was born in Bourbon, Missouri on January 8, 1915. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, who died in 1964; her parents, Richard and Delcie Haase; and sister, Eleanor Shuey of St Louis, Missouri. She is survived by her daughter, Pat Stone and husband, Harold; grandson, Richard Stone from Seattle WA; granddaughter, Carol Ruff and husband, David; great-granddaughter, Alison Ruff of Albuquerque. Mrs. Banner was a member and a dedicated worker in the Santa Rosa Methodist Church while living there. She continued her work at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose beautiful smile and care for others will long be remembered by those who knew and loved her. The family expresses a sincere thanks to the staff at Las Palomas Nursing Center for their loving care in the past two years. As she requested, cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Bivins -- Loretta "Sandy" Bivins, 80, a resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, September 16, 2000. She is survived by her daughters, Valorie Bivins of Albuquerque, Rhonda Sherrie Smith and husband, Bill of Odessa, TX; granddaughter, Shelby Goolsby and husband, Bear of San Antonio, TX; grandson, Tyler Church of College Station, TX; sister, Zeldia Vanlandingham of Albuquerque; brother, Oren Taylor and wife, Jenny Lynn of Bentonville, AR; and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Bivins, in 1980. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Contreras -- Abe Ray Contreras, 23, passed away Monday after a tragic accident. He leaves behind his fiance, Billie Moore; and a beautiful daughter, Ashley Renee. He is also survived by his father and mother, Joe and Sharon Contreras; two sisters, Alexis and Amy; and several other family members of Las Cruces. No one can fully share the sorrow his sudden untimely death has brought to his family and friends. We take comfort in the knowledge Abe will live on as an organ donor. He will be missed and always remembered. A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 20, 10:00 a.m., at 5801 Coors SW (physical location is Coors Road to one mile south of Gun Club, turn right at Pajarito). A Memorial service for his final resting place will be held Saturday in Las Cruces, location to be determined.

Contreras -- Primo Contreras, eldest of ten children, born December 7, 1931 in Fabens, Texas to Primo Sr. and Maria Rufugio"Cuquita" Contreras. Contreras attended St. Charles College, Jesuit Seminary in Grand Coteau, LA in 1950 and ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in 1963. He taught at Jesuit High Schools in Tampa, Florida and El Paso, Texas. In 1970, Contreras was allowed to dispense his priestly vows, and began a 27-year career as a Theology teacher at St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque. He married Priscilla Boone in July, 1971, becoming the father of six children ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 11 years old. He was awarded the New Mexico Catholic Schools' Distinguished Teacher Award in 1991. In 1995, he and his wife, Priscilla went to Russia with the Ecumencial Co-Mission to teach Christian Morality in Rostov, Puskin and St. Petersburg. Primo returned to St. Pius for a final year, leaving in 1997. He then began a new mission of service, teaching Native American children in New Mexico Pueblos. He taught at San Diego Mission School at Jemez Pueblo for two years and at St. Anthony in Zuni, NM this past year. Primo is survived by his wife, Priscilla; their six children, William Boone and wife, Lori of Seattle, WA, Priscilla and husband, Sinclair Mangram of Pueblo, CO, Martin Boone and fiancee, Rachel Czajka of Morgantown, WV, John Boone and wife, Shanna of Baltimore, MD, Elena Boone and partner, Maxine Harris of Simi Valley, CA, Margaret Mary Boone and fiance, Charles Pixley of Phoenix, AZ, and Bernard Clifford, loved as a son, and wife, Rosella of Albuquerque. Primo is also survived by nine grandchildren, Justin and Tarin Boone (Bill), Jon Boone and Clearthur Mangram (Priscilla), Ryan, Evan and Cory Boone (John), Christopher and Patrick Clifford (Bernie). Other survivors include his mother, Maria Rufugio Contreras; siblings, Robert Contreras and wife, Yolanda, Martha Prieto, Billie Dunn and husband, John, Sandra Varela and husband, Tom, Rose Carmona and husband, Beto, Judy Rey, Miguel Contreras and wife, Judith, Tommy Contreras, Terry Ramos; and many beloved nephews and nieces, all of El Paso, Texas. His legacy is carried within his survivors and extends far and wide into the thousands of souls that he touched on his path to salvation. The viewing will commence at 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service following at 7:30 p.m. at St. Pius X High School on Thursday, September 21, in the school gymnasium on Coors and St. Joseph's Dr. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church at 619 Copper Ave. NW, Albuquerque. Internment will be held immediately following at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7500 Paseo Del Norte NE, Albuquerque. Counts -- Jack Counts, 77, a resident of Albuquerque for 27 years, died Sunday, September 17, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Katherine Counts of Albuquerque; sons, John Meier of Ft. Wayne, IN and Frank Meier of Cleveland, OH; four granddaughters; one grandson; one great-grandson; one aunt; and numerous cousins, relatives and friends. Jack was a Captain in the Army Air Corps, serving as a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Private family services will take place at a later date. Fierro -- Our Beloved Ernie Fierro joined the choir of angels in heaven on Monday, September 18, 2000. Mr. Fierro was born in Loving, NM on January 25, 1940 to Cresencio and Sylvestra Fierro. He served in the United States Armed Forces and was a member of the American Legion Post 69 and the Nativity Knights of Columbus. Mr. Fierro is survived by his wife, Helen Fierro; his daughters, Brenda Fierro and Cynthia Fierro-Trujillo; brothers and sisters, Jim Fierro, Benito Fierro, Pedro Fierro, Fransisco Fierro, Olivia Fierro, Eliseo Fierro, Mary Lou Perez and Fidel Fierro; five grandchildren, Shelbi Simeone, Carlos Simeone, Tierney Trujillo, Jasmine Vigil and Darren Trujillo. Funeral services for Mr. Fierro will be held on Thursday at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Fraker -- Cuma M. Fraker, 73, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, died on Sunday, September 17, 2000. Mrs. Fraker is survived by her sons, Robert E. Freel -- Frank J. Freel, 82, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past six and a half years, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2000. Frank was born on January 17, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. He had been a Bank Vice President before retiring after 39 years in the Banking business. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred in 1995; daughter, Deborah Freel; step-son, Walter O'Hearn; and one grandson, Robert Famiglietta. He is survived by three children, Mildred Mackin and husband, Fran of Washingtonville, NY, Fran Famiglietta and husband, Mike of Rio Rancho, and Frank Freel of Tampa, FL; one brother, William Freel of Brooklyn, NY; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The visitation for Frank will be on Thursday, September 21, 2000, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. Garcia -- Roger F. Garcia, 58, passed away following a long illness Sunday, September 17, 2000, while surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Garcia was born in Taos, NM on December 10, 1941; he was a parishioner of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving parents, Cleofas and Frank Garcia of Albuquerque; his three daughters, Claudine Garcia and fiance, William Wilkins of El Paso, TX, Anna Regina Kyzer and husband, John and Tina Marie Tait of Santa Fe; two granddaughters, Christina and Jessica Kyzer, both of Tucson, AZ. Gilbride -- Thomas J. Gilbride, 60, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 40 years, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2000. Thomas was born March 21, 1940, the son of Bernard and Marina Adamson Gilbride, Sr. in New Haven, Connecticut. He served in the US Marines from 1961 to 1967. Thomas was a History Teacher at the Rio Grande High School with the Albuquerque Public Schools for the past 14 years. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Tomasita of Rio Rancho; four children, Christina Otero of Sandia Pueblo, NM, Nichole Urrutia and husband, Arturo of Albuquerque, Michelle Armijo and husband, Adam of Albuquerque, and Tanya Palmeri and husband, Vincent of Rio Rancho; one brother, Dennis Gilbride of Connecticut; one sister, Merina Gilbride of Washington; and six grandchildren, Jose Domingo, Thomas Otero, Adriana, and Alex Urrutia and Anthony, and Vincent Palmeri. Huie -- Sam Huie, 93, died at his home in Las Vegas, NM, Wednesday, September 6. He was born July 10, 1907 in Canton, China. A WWII veteran, he served in the US Army in the European Theater and was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 1547 in Las Vegas. Sam is survived by his wife of 57 years, Agueda of the family home; sons, Tom Huie and wife, Anna of Las Vegas, NM, Louie Huie and wife, Jan of Syracuse, UT; daughter, Juanita Fuller and husband, Mike of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Tomasina Huie of Las Cruces, NM, Robb Huie and wife, Michele of New Haven, CT, Jonathan Huie of Missoula, MT; and sister-in-law, Eula Cliggett of Las Vegas, NM. He was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Donato and Josefita Rivera; brothers-in-law, Jose Lino Rivera and George Cliggett; sister-in-law, Margaret Rivera. Kendall -- David Aaron Kendall, 28, and a resident of Rio Rancho since 1999, died in an accident near Grants, NM on September 18, 2000. He was born in Colorado Springs, CO and was a veteran of the US Navy. He is survived by his loving wife of five years, Laura Kendall of Rio Rancho; father, John Kendall of Maine; and mother, Hye-sop Lee of New York. Mader -- Jeanne Marie Mader, 75, a 23-year resident of Rio Rancho, died in her apartment with her son, Bill and his wife, Judy at her side on Friday, September 15, 2000 after a 17 month battle with emphysema. She is also survived by her sister, Beverly Williams and husband, Willie of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania; brother, Jack Jarvis and wife, Char of East Syracuse, New York; grandchildren, Tom Mader and wife, Missy of Hanover, PA, Billy Mader III of Gainesville, FL, and Tiffany Mader of Downey, CA; and great-grandchildren, Alec, Katie, Jacob and Brianna. Jeanne joins her husband of 51 years, Bill who died in September 1996; infant child, Robert; and son, David; parents, Leon and Viola Jarvis; and brothers, Robert and James Jarvis, who preceded her in death. She was devoted to her husband Bill for 51 years, a loving mother to her two sons, and a dear friend to the many who knew her. We will remember her for her sunny disposition, caring heart, tremendous courage, and deep faith. VistaCare Hospice provided comfort for Jeanne and her family. This wonderful service enabled her to pass on to the Lord in peace and dignity. She was a member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Church for over 20 years and active in the Blue Army there. She worked for Oberdorfer Foundries in Syracuse, NY where she met her husband and retired from John Deere, also in Syracuse, in 1977 before moving to New Mexico. Here she and Bill enjoyed the beautiful weather, traveled frequently across the country in their travel trailer, and took several cruises making friends around the world. She and Bill were volunteer hosts at the Redondo State Park. Fr. Madrill -- Mike B. Madrill"Boney", 63, a resident of Belen, passed away on September 18, 2000. Mr. Madrill was the beloved husband of seven years to Kathy Madrill. Martinez -- Candido "Candy" Martinez, 42, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on September 17, 2000 as a result of a motorcycle accident. Candy was the beloved husband of 21 years to Dina Martinez. He is also survived by one daughter, Adeline Martinez; four sons, Fabian Martinez and fiancee, Mayra, Candy Martinez III, Eddie Martinez and Andrew Martinez; his beloved mother, Adelina Martinez; one brother, Arturo Martinez; one sister, Cynthia Hernandez and fiance, Donald Vigil; four grandchildren, Mariah, Vanessa, Justyce and Alyssa; Goddaughter, Lisa Marie Chavez; mother-in-law, Carmen Madrid; father-in-law, Eddie Madrid; compadres, Frank and Lorie Chavez; and all his brothers in the Bandidos Motorcycle Club worldwide. Mcgee -- 1941-2000 Marjory Ann McGee died on Monday, September 18, 2000 after a long and gallant battle against a serious illness. She was born March 4, 1941 in Monte Vista, Colorado to Jack and Claudia McGee. She grew up in Colorado and moved with her family to Belen in 1961. Her creatie and artistic talents found expression in many areas, most notably in her 39 years as a floral designer at Davis Floral Shop. Marjory was an accomplished knitter and weaver. She belonged to the weaving guild Las Aranas and participated in the Taos Wool Festival and in the New Mexico State Fair for many years, demonstrating the"Sheep to Shawl" process of carding, dyeing, spinning, and weaving the wool. In recent years, Marjory had become enamored of alpaca wool and was a frequent visitor to Victory Ranch, home to many alpacas, in Mora, New Mexico. Her creative touch was evident as well in her work in the fabric department at Wal-Mart. Marjory was an avid collector of items used in spinning and weaving. In spite of her diminutive size, Marjory was"big sister" not only to her own sisters and brothers, but also to many others her life touched. She and her sister, Betty"B.J." McGee served as mentors and chaperones for the Methodist Youth Fellowship in the late 1970's. Marjory is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Paige McGee of Aurora, IL; eight sisters and six brothers-in-law, Betty"B.J." McGee of Belen, Millie and Paul Gromatzky of Deming, Kathy and David Larison, Dorothy and Bob Ashmore, Jackie and Kevin Loretto, all of Albuquerque, Sherry and Doug Pettigrew of Clovis, Marilyn and Cleve Teague and Gigi Pfeiffer, all of Portales; five nieces, ten nephews and her close friend, special boss, and"adopted" brother, Dale Davis. Visitation will be held on Thursday afternoon, September 21, between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., at Riverside Funeral Home Chapel. Padilla -- Dorothy S. Padilla, 72, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away quietly Monday, September 18, 2000 into the hands of our Lord at home surrounded by the ones she loved. She is survived by her sons, Vic Padilla, Sr. and wife, Mary Alice, Alex E. Padilla, Jr.; daughter, Debra L. Medina and husband, Arturo; grandchildren, Cecilia Padilla and fiance, Pat Quillen, Vic Padilla, Jr. and wife, Denise, Yvonne Medina and fiance, Chris Jones, Dottie Narvaiz and husband, Robert, Dustin Padilla, Natasha Hagan and husband, John and Tracie Lynn Padilla; great-grandchildren, Christopher Jones, Autumn Weaver, Mykayla Jones, Robert Paul Narvaiz and Justis Quillen; brother, Ben Sanches and wife, Rose; sisters, Dolores Castillo and husband, Gilbert, Rafella Chacon and husband, Robert; and many loving family members. She was the loving wife of Alex E. Padilla, Sr., who preceded her in death five years ago. Also preceding her in death were her father, Victor Sanchez; mother, Teresa Maria Sanchez; step-mother, Isebelle Sanchez; sisters, Cecelia Lucero and Mary Marino. They are all now together once again to continue their watch over their family. Dorothy touched the lives of many and we are all the richer for knowing her.¯The Heavens are indeed glorious now that our Angel is home. Pecastaing -- Cyril¯"Cye" Pecastaing, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Sunday, September 17, 2000. He is survived by his sons, Louis Pecastaing and Mary Ann, and Michael Cyril Pecastaing, all of Albuquerque, and Frank Pecastaing and wife, Angela of Las Cruces; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Pecastaing of Belen; granddaughters, Tyia Pecastaing of California, Michelle Pecastaing of Belen, Jennifer Callinan and husband, Shane and Danielle Antoinette Pecastaing, all of Albuquerque, and Kayla Pecastaing of Las Cruces; grandsons, Marcel Pecastaing of Belen, Nicholas Pecastaing, Gabriel Pecastaing and Michael Andre Pecastaing, all of Albuquerque; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Frances Parrill of New Orleans, LA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace O. Pecastaing; and son, James Marcel Pecastaing. Mr. Pecastaing was a founding member of the Holy Ghost Church and was a member of the choir. He was president of the Model Railroad Club and was also a member of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus Band. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 9:00 a.m, at Holy Ghost Church, with Fr. Rusek -- Sister Mary Calasantia Rusek (Helen Rusek) died on Saturday, September 16, 2000 at the Felician Sisters Convent in Rio Rancho. She was born on January 14, 1909, in Evanston, Illinois to Anthony and Marianne (Dominiak) Rusek, both of Poland. Sister Calasantia served in Religious Life for 70 years as a Felician-Franciscan. She was certified in the culinary arts by the Fanny Farmer School of Cooking in Boston, Massachusetts, and ministered in nutrition services in schools, convents, and orphanages across ten states for 58 years. She also enjoyed handcrafts and sewing. She is preceded in death by her parents; three infant brothers; brothers, John and Casimir Rusek; sisters, Mary Rusek, Anna Ponkowski and Lottie Milecki. Several nieces and nephews survive her. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the convent at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2000, with Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Sanchez -- Queta¯"Henrietta" Nelson Sanchez, 90, an Albuquerque resident, died Monday, September 18, 2000. She is survived by her children, Harold Sanchez of Lakewood, CO, Gilbert Sanchez of Ft. Sumner, NM, Emily Brassell and husband, Albert of Arvada, CO, Antonia Salaz and husband, Antonio of Portales, NM, Joe Sanchez of Glorietta, Billy Sanchez and wife, Rita of Sena, NM, Mary Lucero and husband, Jimmy of Albuquerque, with whom she resided; granddaughter, Judy Sanchez of Boulder, CO, whom she and Abelino raised; and 29 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren, with whom she was blessed; and sister, Celina Sanchez of Anton Chico, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband, Abelino Sanchez on December 28, 1969. Mrs. Sanchez was born to Benito and Emilia Nelson on December 16, 1909. She was raised in Guadalupe County and lived in Dahlia, NM until 1970. Mrs. Sanchez was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church where she was an active member of the Blue Army and Altar Rosary Society. She received her teaching certificate from Highlands University and taught school in Potrillo, Milagro, Los Rincones, Anton Chico, Pintada, and Dahlia, NM, until her retirement in 1960. Her favorite pastimes were spending time in the kitchen baking bread, gardening and praying at home or at church. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to her caregivers, Francisca"Kika" Rivera, Lara Mae Gurule, and especially to her daughter, Mary Lucero and husband, Jimmy. Smith -- Jeanne Popejoy Smith, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, died September 16th, 2000, at the age of 72. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas L. Popejoy, Sr., in 1975, and Bess Kimball Popejoy, in 1996. Jeanne was a teacher at Rio Grande High School and Albuquerque Job Corps. She owned and operated Lullaby Guild in the late 70's, and Alpha Nurses in the 80's. She was the State president of Business and Professional Women from 1989 to 1990. Jeanne was a brilliant, kind, loving and generous person. Like her father before her, Jeanne succumbed to Alzheimer's Disease. She is survived by sons, David W. Smith, wife, Susan, and children, Loring and Hilary; James T. smith, wife, Paula, and children, Jessica, Nicholas, and Cheyenne; Michael P. Smith, wife, Janet, and children, Leah and Shane; and daughters, Barbara Jeanne Smith; Claire Weaver, and children, Michael and Wendy. A memorial celebration will be held on Friday, September 22nd, 2000, at St. Michael's and All Angels Church, at 601 Montano, NW, at 7:30 p.m. Her family asks that no flowers be sent. Steurer -- Charles David Steurer, III passed away September 14, 2000. He was born May 17, 1919 in Bronx, New York. He is survived by his daughter, Coral Victoria Steurer-Clark, her husband, Jeff, and by his grandchildren, Colt, Bruce, Holly and Jeffrey Scott, all of New Mexico."Dave" worked for his family's printing company Steurer Press and Printing, and went on to General Electric for over 43 years. He lived on Harbor Views Island in S. Norwalk, CT and fished for many a bass in the Sound before retiring and moving to Frankfort, ME, where he loved to fish and talk to his trees."Dave" was a longtime friend of Bill W's and gave many years of service to all his friends. He passed away in great peace and faith, looking forward to being of greater service, dedicating the merit of his death to all those and their families who suffer from alcoholism with the prayer that he might take their suffering with him and they might not suffer ever again. His deep caring, his silliness, his sure, quick smile, and twinkling eyes will be with those who knew and loved him always. Varoz -- Edward Varoz was born in El Rito, New Mexico on May 16, 1920 and passed away on Friday, September 15, 2000. Edward served in the Army of the United States as a cannoneer crewman in the Far West Pacific and in Iwojima during World War II. He received several declaration for good conduct, and received a victory ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater medal. He attended one year of college at New Mexico Highland University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He is survived by one daughter, Christina Varoz from Denver, CO; one brother, Ted Varoz, Sr. and sister-in-law, Olga Varoz; a sister, Alice Garcia; and 21 nieces and nephews; and four grandnieces and nephews. Services are pending. Pallbearers are Dr. Ted Varoz, Jr., Timothy Varoz, Thomas Varoz, Francisco Garcia, Ray Estrada and Fredrick Garcia.

Wesbrook -- Marie Watkins Wesbrook died September 18, 2000 in Albuquerque. She was born June 14, 1919 in Hobart, OK, the eldest child of Dr. Barton H. and Maryetta Stewart Watkins. She spent her early life in Oklahoma. She was a graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, TN and during World War II she served in the Army Nurse Corps. She married John E. Wesbrook of Aurora, IL, on June 1, 1943, at Camp Berkley in Abilene, TX. In 1946, she and her husband moved to Las Vegas, NM, and then to Albuquerque in 1947. She worked in the medical offices of Dr. Robert Trombley before and after the births of her three children, John J.B. Wesbrook, Ann Wesbrook Chaffee and David P. Wesbrook. In retirement she enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and spending time with her grandchildren. In 1992, she was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease), which she accepted gracefully and without anger, and which was the ultimate cause of her death. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother; sister; and son-in-law. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jack; three children; five grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; cousins; and lifelong friends. Interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A Rosary will be held at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Home, 3113 Carlisle NE, Wednesday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Society of the Most Holy Trinity, c/o Father John McHugh, P.O. Box 536, Bosque, NM 87006. Her family wishes to thank the staff of Manor Care Camino Vista Nursing Home for their kindness and care during her final two years. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat of the bread of idleness.
