Lassiter -- Robert Glenn Lassiter, a resident of Albuquerque for 40 years and an irredeemable Chicago Cubs fan, died peacefully on the evening of September 17, 1999. He was 87 years old. Born in George, NC, Robert sneaked his way into the United States Army at the age of 17, where he would serve from 1929 to 1932. While in the Army, Robert learned an alternate meaning for the initials S.O.S. (a concoction he would happily serve to his grandchildren on sunny weekend afternoons) and saw the first of many"Cubs" games at Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL, well before the stadium lights were installed. In 1944, Robert married Mary Bennett, who would remain at his side for the next 55 years no matter how poorly the Cubs fared or how many times in a row he would play the same Boxcar Willie records. Together, they shared an extraordinary love that gushed forth and enveloped everyone around them; a love that knew no bounds and continues to resonate deeply within all who have known them. In 1959, Robert and Mary moved to Albuquerque, where Mr. Lassiter worked as an administrator at the Veterans Administration Hospital until his retirement in 1969. Following his retirement, Robert and his wife occupied themselves with quite a bit of fishing, babysitting their five grandchildren and enjoying each other regardless of what else was going on. In his later years, Robert made family and friends his priority and was never at a loss for a bit of keen wisdom, a shred of biting humor or a silent, reassuring nod of understanding. Some of it, he would say, he learned from Andy Rooney, the rest from Tom T. Hall. Neither was true, but his rare humility was the cornerstone of this personality. Robert led an exemplary life and did his best to help those he loved get the most out of theirs. His pocket full of favors was infinite and his proud legacy lives on within all whose lives he touched. With any luck, Mr. Lassiter will now spend a good portion of his time straightening out the mess in the Cub's front office while continuing to keep a watchful eye over his family. To be sure, he will be forever remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Mr. Lassiter was preceded in death by his son, Robert T.G. Lassiter. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Mary and husband, Charles Smiroldo; grandchildren, Lauri Lanier and husband, John, Kara Barta and husband, Steven, Michael Henningsen, Timothy Glenn Henningsen and wife, Susan, and Kristin Henningsen; and great-grandchildren, Dustin, Becky, Glenn, and Lance. Services will be held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
