Adams -- Meira Adams died in St. Joseph's Hospital on Friday, March 12, 1999. She was born November 20, 1946 in Brighton, Sussex, England. She is survived by her mother, Adelaide Underwood and her brother, Simon Thomas Underwood, both of Brighton. Meira's life was a triumph of action over adversity, and a journey of overcoming challenges. Beginning at age 17, she traveled in South Africa, Europe and the U.S. as a professional ice skater. At 21, she moved to the United States, and was grated U.S. Citizenship in 1998. She attended the University of Oklahoma, College of Dentistry, and also received a certificate for teaching ballet. She won numerous awards for dance, most recently for a performance in the Senior Olympics. During the past two years, she volunteer-taught ballet at the Hayden School of Ballet. She came to Albuquerque in the late 1970's and finished a BS in Psychology at the University of New Mexico. Two years ago she earned a Certificate in Exercise Physiology from T-VI. In 1998 she celebrated her Bat Mitzvah in the Jewish tradition. She was active as a volunteer at Congregation B-nai Israel. Meira loved animals and was active with the Sandia Dog Obedience Club. She leaves behind two beloved Scotties who will go to a new home together. Meira will be remembered by those who knew her well for her courage, her tenacity and her perseverance against all odds. She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful daughter and sister. Services will be held at Fairview Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 18, Rabbi Isaac Celnik officiating. Apodaca -- Lee Anthony Apodaca, 32, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away in his sleep Friday, March 12, 1999. He is survived by his fiancee, Melanie Sweeney; father, Harry Apodaca; mother, Sue Apodaca; grandmother, Clara Fresquez Apodaca; step-mother, Terry Apodaca; brother, Adrian Apodaca; sister, Alanna Marie Apodaca; and nephew, Troy Fresquez. Baldonado -- Clara Marie Baldonado, 79, entered into rest March 12, 1999 in San Jose, CA. Benton -- William Henry Benton, 81, Deming resident, passed away Friday, March 12, 1999 at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon, 1:00 p.m., at Baca's Funeral Chapel. Mr. Benton was born May 26, 1917 in Kittanning, PA to William Henry Benton and Anna Falka Benton and served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Martha Hare, March 18, 1945 in Syracuse, New York. He graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Engineering in 1952. He worked for the United States Army Corps. of Engineers for 28 years in Albuquerque and had been a licensed New Mexico Engineer since 1952. Mr. Benton had lived in Deming since 1980 and worked as a consulting engineer on commercial building projects in the area. Survivors include his wife, Martha Benton of Deming; one brother, James Creighton of Kittanning, PA; one brother-in-law, Ralph L. Hare and his wife, Lelia of Tubac, AZ; one niece and two nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Deming Amateur Radio Club, P.O. Black -- New Mexico Pioneer Woman Dies. Mary J. Black passed away March 12, 1999 at her residence in Montebello. Mary was born April 1, 1912 on the family farm at Hope, in the territory of New Mexico to Bryant and Mary Williams. Mary Jane graduated from Hope High School and attended the University of New Mexico. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. In 1935 she married Albert J. Black who was ranching west of Albuquerque. They helped found the Paradise Hills Methodist Church on the west side of Albuquerque. Albert preceded her in death in 1989. Mary Black is survived by her three sons, A. Rolfe Black and wife, Dorothy of Dallas, William R. Black and his wife, Sarilyn of Midland, John F. Black and his wife, Joan of Albuquerque; and one daughter, Jane Davidson of Albuquerque. She had ten grandchildren, Wade Black, Stephanie Black, Paige Grumuliatus, Amy Black, Colby Black, Chelsea Black, Kevin Black, Alyssa Black, Bryan Davidson, and Lee Ann Davidson Diamond; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Grumuliatus and Sarah Grumuliatus. Mary Jane had two sisters, Alice Ruth Williams (Deceased) and Margaret Fincke of Albuquerque. She also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Jane will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Services were held at Vista Verde Mortuary Chapel on Monday, March 15, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. The family requests donations be made to the Albert J. Black and Mary J. Black memorial fund of the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch. The family of Mary J. Dannenbaum -- George S. Dannenbaum, 83, passed away early Sunday morning on March 14, 1999 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona. Born in Grants, New Mexico May 25, 1915 to Bernard Dannenbaum and Rica Morgan Dannenbaum, George was a lifelong resident of Grants. He was also the former Mayor of Grants during the Uranium Boom, and recently authored the book"Boom to Bust." He was the beloved husband of the late Jennie (Padilla) Dannenbaum. George is survived by his six children, Rick Dannenbaum of Albuquerque, Ken Dannenbaum and his wife, Mary Ruth of Phoenix, Georgianna Dannenbaum of Grants, Tom Dannenbaum and his wife, Anna of Phoenix, Jon Dannenbaum of Grants, and Rae Ann Dannenbaum of Phoenix. George also has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. George was past State Commander of V.F.W. and a member of the D.A.V. Post. He served the community as Deputy Sheriff, teacher, Juvenile Probation Officer, and was a five term Mayor of Grants. He owned and published the"Uranium City News", and also owned several businesses. George was dearly loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. Graveside services will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM following cremation on Friday, March 19, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. Grants Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Driskill -- Otho W. Driskill, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1945, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. He is survived by his sons, Burl W. Driskill and wife, Ila of Los Angeles, CA, Glen W. Driskill of Prescott, AZ, Otho W. Driskill of Bothell, WA, and Clifford Dale Driskill and wife, Cheryl of Hanford, CA; daughters, Betty L. Foster and husband, John of Sun City, AZ and Flo Kasha of Albuquerque; many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and brothers, Elbert Driskill and Luin Driskill, both of Tennessee, Malcolm Driskill of Florida and Raymond Driskill of Arkansas. Dyer -- Unie Belle Dyer, 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 1959, died Saturday, March 13, 1999. She was a native of Dekalb Co., AL, born in Albertville on September 27, 1917. Unie Belle graduated from Snead Junior College in Boaz, AL in 1939 with a degree in commerce. Unie Belle retired after 35 years of federal service as a technical editor with Kirtland Air Force Base. She was a faithful member of the Netherwood Park Church of Christ and was dedicated to helping people. Unie Belle worked for many years as supervisor and coordinator of the preschool Bible class department and as church librarian. She was Secretary/Treasurer of the National Health Federation and worked tirelessly for the National Association for Retired Federal Employees. Unie Belle will be missed by many friends. Services will be held Wednesday, 2:00 p.m., at Netherwood Park Church of Christ, I-40 and San Mateo NE, with Wayne Sharp officiating. Grymkoski -- Edward S. Grymkoski passed away peacefully on Friday, March 12, 1999 at the age of 84, at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque after complications from cancer. Edward was born and raised in Waukegan, Illinois. He served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Salt Lake City in the Pacific. On February 22, 1947, Edward and Virginia were married. He was a resident of New Mexico since October 1950 and a resident of Albuquerque since October 1954. Ed was a tool and die maker at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory prior to operating his own machine shop business, Superior Machine Specialties in Albuquerque. We are thankful for a healthy and long life for such a hard working man, who grew up in the Depression, knew the value of the dollar throughout his life, and took deep pride in everything he did. He will also be remembered for being light on his feet on the ballroom dance floor, where he spent many a Friday and Saturday nights dancing the night away till the last dance. All his great friends and family will miss him and we are thankful for their support in the past few months. Edward's brothers, Ernest and Leonard from Waukegan, IL; sister, Florence Heineman of Scottsdale, AZ; his son, Lee F. of Albuquerque and son, Peter S.; two grandchildren, Jonathan Grymkoski and Nicole Grymkoski survive Edward. Hardison -- Melvin A. Hardison, 69, passed away Sunday, March 14, 1999 and is now with his mother, Eula; father, Fonnie; and mother-in-law, Patricia Krbec. He is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie Hardison; sons, Tye Hardison and wife, Caroline of Albuquerque and Bryan Goetsch and wife, Alyse of Williamsburg, VA; daughters, Cember Hardison, Suzy Dunnum and husband, Jon and Tracey Goetsch, all of Albuquerque. Mr. Hardison was also blessed with three grandchildren, Alexander Hardison Goetsch and Margaret Anne Goetsch, both of Williamsburg, VA, and Somiya Kiryn Dunnum of Albuquerque. He is also survived by his brothers, Curtis Hardison and wife, Martha of Albuquerque, Kenneth Hardison, James Hardison, Bruce Hardison and Don Hardison; and sisters, Frances Nichols, Mary Mitchell and Kay Jackson. Mel was born in Amarillo, TX and raised in Eunice. After serving in the U.S. Army, he graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1955 and was an avid supporter of Lobo athletics. Mel had worked for the last 25 years for Hooten/Stahl, Inc. and was currently the CFO for Realco, Inc. He was a member of the NMSCPA and AICPA. Mel devoted himself to caring for his family and providing beyond financial support to all of us. He was extremely proud of all his children and loved nothing more than to have the house full of family and friends. His lifelong love was singing-demonstrated by his membership in the Symphony Chorus, the Enchanters and the St. Chad's choir. Mel was a charter member of St. Chad's Episcopal Church and held a constant interest in the workings of his local parish as well as the Diocese of the Rio Grande. He always believed that we could and should gather together to share ideas and viewpoints, then part as brothers and sisters in Christ. Mel was a past president of Planned Parenthood, the Civic Light Opera and was currently a member of the All Faith's Receiving Home Board of Trustees and Board of Directors. As he would want, we will gather in celebration of his tremendous life and accomplishments, Thursday, 11:00 a.m., at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond NE. Montoya -- Richard M. Montoya, 77, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Emily T. Montoya of Albuquerque; sons, Charles T. O'callaghan -- Sylvia M. O'Callaghan, 84, an Albuquerque resident since 1978, died Monday, March 15, 1999. Mrs. O'Callaghan is survived by her sons, Phillip J. O'Callaghan and wife, Arline of Albuquerque and Bruce O'Callaghan and wife, Susan of Sioux City, IA; daughter, Patricia Jonas and husband, Elden of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Melanie, Steven, Paul, Stephen, Todd, Kerry, Kristi, Brian; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Eunice Gobeli of Two Dot, UT. Mrs. O'Callaghan was a former president of the Friendship Club of the J.F.G.A. She was a talented musician and singer and sang with theater groups while living in New York City. Otero -- Josephine Otero, 71, beloved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was called home to be with the Lord on her birthday, Monday, March 15, 1999. Mrs. Otero was born in Albuquerque; she was parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Porfirio Otero of the family home; three daughters, Lorraine Pollack and husband, Gabriel, Mary Benavidez, Aida Garcia and husband, Ronnie; three sons, Tom Otero, Anthony Otero and wife, Rose, Lawrence Otero; two granddaughters, Gabriella Wood and Angel Pollack; eight grandsons, Pete and Patrick Benavidez, Orlando and Ronnie Garcia, Arthur and Andres Herrera, Chris Drinkwater, Thomas Otero; and seven great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. Ulibarri -- Manuel Leroy Ulibarri, age 54, a lifelong resident of Las Vegas, New Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico on June 15, 1944 to John Ulibarri Sr. and Mary Trujillo Ulibarri. He was united in marriage in Las Vegas, New Mexico on June 21, 1969 to Mary Esther Romero and they raised their son, Christopher. He retired in September 1998 from the Luna Vocational Technical Institute, where he was employed as Administrator for a total of 25 years in Education. He also worked as Director of Housing at the New Mexico Highlands University. He was a high school graduate of Espanola High School. He received his B.A. from the New Mexico Highlands University and was also a football player for Highlands University. He attended Anderson School of Business at the University of New Mexico. He served in the United States Air Force as SSGT. He was awarded the NDSM, Air Force Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He was also a member of the New Mexico Air Guard in Albuquerque, the La Plaza Little League Coach, and an avid golfer, and he enjoyed fishing and gardening. A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church. He was preceded in death by his father, John Ulibarri Sr.; brother, John Ulibarri Jr.; nephews, John Ulibarri III and Rudy Roybal; father-in-law, Joe V. Romero; nephew, Louis Sanchez. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and friend. Rosary devotional services will be conducted on Wednesday evening, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Henry Geoffrion reciting the rosary. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday morning, 9:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Father Vincent G. DeFazio as Celebrant. Interment will follow at 12:00 noon at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as casket bearers, Tino Gallegos, Albert Salazar, Eileen Serna, Dennis Marquez, Philip J. Romero and Bonifacio Lucero. Serving as honorary bearers, Lasardo Lucero, Jerry Ortiz, Artie Geoffrion, Alfonso Garcia, Orlando Montoya and Billy Ortiz. He will lie in state at the Rogers Chapel on Wednesday all day until 5:30 p.m. where family and friends may call. Vanover -- John Vanover Sr., age 88, went to be with the Lord on Sunday evening, March 14, 1999, at home surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Monroe and Cassian (Ritchie) Vanover and son, James Mark, and by eight sisters and one brother. He was married to his wife, Viola Hubbard Vanover for 63 years and six children were born to them, Elizabeth Joan (Mrs. John M. Roberts), Phyllis Jane (Mrs. Wayne Costly), John Paul Vanover Jr. and wife, Isabel, Mary Gayle (Mrs. Roger Maggard), Deborah Lynn (Mrs. David Standfier) and James Mark who died at 15 years of age. He leaves 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren and many loving friends. Mr. Vanover was born in Pound, VA in 1911 and grew up in McRoberts, KY. He joined the Army at 15 and was stationed in China for the last part of his service time. He moved to Albuquerque in 1949 and became a mason-builder. The family will welcome friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Services will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church at Carlisle and Silver SE at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Varney -- Harold S. Varney, 78, a resident of Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA, formerly of Albuquerque, passed away Thursday, Mach 11, 1999. He is survived by his loving wife, Beth of Rio Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; son, Buzzie of Porterville, CA; daughter, Kitty Lou of Manassas, VA; two granddaughters, Alex and Jenna; and sister, Edna Conway of Las Cruces. Mr. Varney was born on April 20, 1920 in Corona, NM to Arthur and Eula May Varney. He graduated from Albuquerque High School, and in 1941, received a BS degree from the University of New Mexico. Mr. Varney served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an electronic technician. He married Beth M. Grier on September 26, 1947 and began a 36 year career with North American Rockwell. Mr. Varney retired in 1982 after working mainly on the B-1 Bomber. He professed faith in Jesus Christ and was a member of Baptist and Covenant Churches. Mr. Varney enjoyed science astronomy and science fiction novels. Graveside services will be held Thursday, 2:00 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, with Pastor D. Williams -- Virginia R. Williams, 66, a resident of Albuquerque, went to be with our Lord on March 16, 1999. She died of brain cancer at the age of 66. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Charles E. Williams Sr.; son, Charles E. William Jr. and wife, Helen; daughter, Linda G. Ferguson and husband, Wade; grandsons, Charles E. Williams III and Brian Ferguson; granddaughters, Krista Williams, Amy Hill and husband, Paul, and Lisa Ferguson; great-grandson, Colby Marshall, all of Albuquerque; brothers, Joe Hicks and wife, Charlene, Carl Hicks and wife, Clorine, Ralph Hicks and wife, Thelma, Pete Hicks and wife, Mickey, all of Missouri; brothers-in-law, Dalton Williams and wife, Opal, Tom Williams and wife, Jean, Devon Williams and wife, Kay, Dewey Williams and wife, Carol; sisters-in-law, Shirley Cogar and husband, Ted, Gertie Gibson, Gerry Mealy and husband, Junior, Genevie Saeler and husband, John; and cousin, Joe C. Hicks and wife, Lila, all from back East. She was preceded in death by her father, Alba Hicks of Albuquerque; and mother, Leota Gibbs of Poplar Bluff, MO. Mrs. Williams was born in Poplar Bluff, MO on October 18, 1932 and moved to Albuquerque in 1942. She married Charlie on August 20, 1948 in Albuquerque. Virginia retired from Montgomery Wards in January, 1984, after 20 years of service. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling, doing crafts, going to yard sales, and wintering in Yuma, AZ. She loved her family unconditionally and was a wonderful friend to many. Mrs. Williams will be lovingly remembered at a memorial service, Saturday, March 20, 1999, 2:00 p.m., at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona NE,with Rev. Charlie Price officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, on Friday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. .DMP
