Atencio -- Rose Atencio, age eighty-eight, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, passed away on October 30, 2001. She was born to Reyes and Ufemia Candelaria in Concho, Arizona on June 10, 1913. Rose was the oldest of four children. When she was ten, her father died accidentally while loading sheep into a railroad car. His foot was severed and he died from loss of blood when he was unknowingly left behind. The following year her mother died after suffering an epileptic seizure. Rose and her brothers and sister went to live with an aunt and uncle. She was the oldest of all the children of which there were fourteen eventually. Throughout her childhood, Rose cooked, cleaned and helped with the children. She was "Mother" to her two brothers Bennie, Johnny and sister, Virginia. Virginia and Bennie have both preceded her in death. Rose is survived by her brother, John Candelaria; her husband, Gilbert; three daughters, Priscilla, Lydia, Viola; and a son, Louie; two sons-in-law, Bill Vittitow and Leland Byers; ten grandchildren, Monica, Martin, Norah, Marc, Michael, Richard, Peter, Julie, Brian and Matthew; and eight, great-grandchildren, Crede, Taylor, Alec, Christian, Joseph, Justin, Benjamin and Noah. Rose was a member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. She was a resident of Manzano Del Sol Health Care Center from February of 2001 until her death. We the family of Rose Atencio, wish to thank the special members of the staff at Manzano Del Sol who helped us care for our mother. Very special thanks to Bill Vittitow who helped in countless ways and Aunt Dora who dropped in to check on mother several times a week. Many thanks to the nieces and nephews and other relatives who traveled here from out of town to visit her and/or sent flowers to show how much they loved her. A Rosary service will be held Friday, November 2nd at 8:00 p.m., at Fitzgerald and Son's Mortuary, 3113 Carlisle NE, near Candelaria. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, at 9:30 a.m., November 3rd, at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5311 Phoenix NE, near Menaul and San Mateo. Fitzgerald & Son Funeral Directors is entrusted to the care of Rose.
