Leyba -- Justiniano Leyba, age 91, of Pecos, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2003, following a brief illness. He was born on December 14, 1911, in Albuquerque to Justiniano Leyba and Sara O'Bannon Leyba. Justiniano was baptized June 2, 1912, (the year New Mexico became a state) by our first Govenor, Octaviano O'Larrazolo and his wife Maria. He was a public school teacher for 42 years, teaching at Leyba, Gonzales, Las Colonias, Rowe and Pecos. Justiniano was a rancher in Leyba right up until the time he died. He was loved and respected by his family and all who knew him. Mr. Leyba was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Rosalia,"Rose" Leyba in 2000. He is survived by son Lawrence Leyba and wife Dolores of Colorado Springs, CO; daughters Lorraine Varela and husband, Phillip, of Albuquerque, and Betty Jean Vieira and husband Orlando of Santa Fe; sister Andrea Bounanni of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including his faithful dog"Buddy". Visitation will be held on Monday, May 5, 2003, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McGee Memorial Chapel and from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary following at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Pecos. Mass of the Resurrection will be on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at 1:30 p.m., also at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow the Mass at the Pecos Cemetery.
