Mcmillan -- Dean E. McMillan, 78, of Belen, New Mexico, died at home on May 17, 2003. He was the youngest of five children born to James E. and Flossie Landreth McMillan, in Charleston, Illinois, on May 31, 1924, after the family moved from Fayette County, IL. Dean was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Glenn E. McMillan of Charleston, IL, and sisters Beryl Scott of Santa Barbara, CA, and Helen Ballard of Lawrenceville, IL. He is survived by his wife, Maurine McMillan, of Belen, NM; his sister, Faye Dayton of Paris, IL; sons and their wives, James E. and Emma of Williamsburg, VA, and Neal E. and Nancy of Las Cruces, NM; grandchildren, Matthew and Christina McMillan of Williamsburg, VA, and Michelle and Daniel of Las Cruces, NM, and ten nieces and nephews and their families. Dean attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers College elementary and high school, and married Maurine Jones of Moweaqua, IL, on October 3, 1948. He served in the US Navy for almost three years in World War II. Under the GI bill he returned to Eastern Illinois State College where he received his degree in physics and mathematics and then a graduate degree in physics at Pennsylvania State University. He worked for three national laboratories for 35 years, the last 25 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory. After retirement to Belen, NM in 1987 he spent five years researching and writing his family history,"McMillans and Associated Families of Fayette, County, Illinois" which was published in 1997; copies can be found in libraries across the US. He continued his family genealogical research and enjoyed playing tennis and badminton, competing in Senior Olympics for several years. Memorials may made to the Fayette County Genealogical and Historical Society, PO Box 177, Vandalia, IL, 62471. Family visitation will be held at Ashley Pond in Los Alamos, NM, at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2003, after private graveside services in Guaje Pines Cemetery, Los Alamos.
