Sanchez -- Eduardo"Eddie" Sanchez Jr., 77, lifelong resident of Raton, New Mexico departed from this world on August 3, 2003 following a brief illness. He was the son of the late Eduardo Sanchez of Hernandez, NM and the late Virginia Vigil-Sanchez of San Jose, NM. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Evelyn Sanchez; and seven children, daughter, Virginia Fulkerson and husband, Arthur of Raton, New Mexico, Larry Sanchez and wife, Yvette of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jerry Sanchez and wife, Becky of Albuquerque, NM, Ron Sanchez of Raton, NM, daughter, Patricia Sanchez and husband, Manuel of Albuquerque, NM, Matthew Sanchez of Weatherford, Texas, and daughter, Beth Underwood of North Zulch, Texas. Eddie was a loving and devoted grandfather to Clayton Wetch, Melissa Sanchez, Samantha Sanchez, Lynette Sanchez, Deric Sanchez, Ryan Sanchez, Antonio Sanchez, Marissa Sanchez, Miranda Sanchez, Coda Sanchez, Brianna Valdez, Caleb Underwood, Jacob Underwood, James Haught, Daniel Fulkerson, Evan Fulkerson, Alysa Fulkerson and a proud great-grandfather to Julio Gomez and Savannah Gomez. He was an uncle to countless nieces and nephews; and a wonderful brother to his sole surviving sister, Josie Ramirez, of Trinidad, Colorado. Eddie was born on October 24, 1925 in Van Houghton, New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II reaching the rank of Sergeant, and fought for his country in the Pacific theater in Japan and the Philippines. Upon returning from the war, Eddie worked in the Van Houghton coalmines in northern New Mexico, United Chevrolet Garage in Raton, New Mexico, and retired in 1988 after a 33-year career from the York Canyon Mine. He was an active member of the UMWA #7949 and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1749. A devout catholic, he was active in the St. Joseph Society, and other church activities. He loved to fish and enjoyed the outdoors at Lake Maloya and other surrounding lakes near Raton, visit with his friends and family, and embraced life each day. His loving and caring attitude touched the lives of many and a piece of his legacy is within all who knew him. Those who knew him will forever miss his generosity, love, and smile. Visitation will be Thursday, August 7, 2003 at the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Rosary Mass is planned at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Friday, August 8, 2003, 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at St Joseph Catholic Church, interment will follow at Mt. Calvary cemetery with a luncheon at St. Joseph Parish Hall to follow interment. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the"Eddie Sanchez Memorial Scholarship Fund" at any Bank of America.
