Madrid -- Barbara Elena Madrid, daughter of the late Frank and Irene"Nea" Madrid of Bernalillo, New Mexico passed away on August 20, 2003 in Santa Monica, California where she lived for forty years. Barbara was born on May 26, 1943 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in Bernalillo. A Memorial Mass was offered for her on August 23, 2003 by Father Gilbert Cruz at St. Clements' Catholic Church in Santa Monica. Barbara gave generously of her time and talents to St. Clements. She was a member of the Liturgical Committee, was active in the CCD program and served tirelessly with youth group retreats, where she mentored many. Her special love was volunteering for the Southern California Special Olympics. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and eldest sister, Fabiola Monteleone. She is survived by two sisters; Clara and husband, Joe, Rosalie and husband, Gene; two brothers, Carlos and wife Vangie, Marcos and wife, Elizabeth; and by seventeen nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Lettie Argueta. A second Memorial Service will be celebrated at Gate of Heaven Chapel on September 6, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Father Bill Sanchez will be officiate at the Mass. Interment will be with her parents at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Barbara retired in 2002 after 34 years of service with the UCLA Extension. The foreign exchange program was one of her favorite projects. Barbara made and nurtured many friendships Her charity, love, guidance, and concern will be remembered by those fortunate to have been a valued part of her life. Her full life is a testament to those she loved and cherished.
