ZAPLIN, MARK ROBERT NOVEMBER 3, 1952 - SEPTEMBER 17, 2014 Mark Zaplin, renowned art gallery owner, died peacefully at his home in Santa Fe, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer. His family and friends were at his side. Born in Boston to Sylvia Cohen Lovit and Nathan Zaplin, Mark grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. In 1972, he and friends discovered a large collection of photographs by the legendary Edward S. Curtis in the basement of a Boston bookstore. This trove of images, from Curtis's thirty-year project documenting the American Indian, led Mark to the West and to his career as a dealer in fine art. After settling in Santa Fe in 1977, he traveled the United States exhibiting the Curtis works at museums and private institutions. Eventually, his interests and expertise expanded to include historic paintings and works on paper by the explorer artists of the American West. In June of 1987, Mark co-founded Zaplin Lampert Gallery on Santa Fe's historic Canyon Road; through his enthusiasm and effort, the gallery quickly gained recognition as a premiere source for the works of the early artists of the Taos Society and the Santa Fe Art Colony, and for American paintings of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Mark's passions, beyond art, included the Grateful Dead, the Boston Red Sox, fly fishing, rafting the Colorado, and traveling the world. And, as accomplished as Mark was in the art world, his proudest moments were those spent helping people. He always had an open door and, in his "gentle tough" way, an uncanny knack for helping others to get to the heart of their challenges. We will continue to tell "Mark stories," benefit from his wise counsel, be inspired by his extraordinary and quiet generosity, and remember his deep love of family and friends. Mark is survived by his girlfriend, Mary O'Gara, of Atlanta, Georgia; his daughter, Jessica Karlin and husband, Jeremy, and their sons, Myles and Noah of Boston, Massachusetts; his daughter, Sylvie Zaplin, of Santa Fe; his brother, Alan Zaplin and wife, Hope, of Newton, Massachusetts; his sister, Ruth Zaplin, of Washington, D.C.; his closest friend and business partner, Richard Lampert, of Santa Fe; his former wife, Robin West, and their beloved dog, Mixie, of Santa Fe; and many other loving relatives and friends. Mark wished to share his deep appreciation and gratitude to Drs. Waun Ki Hong and George Simon and their staff and associates at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and to the Cancer Institute of New Mexico, in Santa Fe. The service will be held on Friday, September 19th, at McGee Memorial Chapel in Santa Fe at 2:00pm. Private interment will follow. Friends and family may call at Zaplin Lampert Gallery, 651 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, on Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20, from 5:30-9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas, 77210-4486. Please designate for research by Dr. Waun Ki Hong.
