BALTIMORE, LAWRENCE "LARRY" PENNY Age 86, longtime resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia; step-children, Michael E. Atencio, Debra DeCesaro and husband, Gary, Mark E. Atencio and wife, Laura, Dorothy A. Atencio and Matthew E. Atencio; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by 2 of his step-children, Dolores F. Atencio and Moses E. Atencio. Larry was born in Raleigh, NC as an only child to Josephine Savage. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army and later becoming a proud paratrooper in the Army Air Corps. After his retirement from the Army in 1967 he became a sheriff for the State of Kansas in Gary County. He served as sheriff for 5 1/2 years. He, Patricia and her children built a life together and eventually moved to New Mexico where they have lived for the past 19 years. Larry volunteered for the past 5 years for the VA Orthopedics and Physical Therapy Department. Larry had a long and distinguished career in the Army and in public service as a law official. His wife and family will always remember him as a devoted family man and a wonderful example for the youth in the family and the community. Friends are welcome to visit on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Westside, with the Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2013, 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1502 Sara Rd SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124.
