HUNTER, ROY W. On Sunday, January 27, 2013, Roy passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Mount Enterprise, Texas on March 18, 1932, Roy moved to Santa Fe in 1944 and graduated from Santa Fe High School five years later. He could often be found exploring and enjoying the vast countryside around Bishop's Lodge, thus beginning a love of the great outdoors which he embraced the rest of his life. Roy not only took pleasure in hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, camping, pinon hunting, fishing, and playing tennis, but was actively involved with numerous environmental organizations. He often used his poignant creative writing skills to pen letters to Congress encouraging them to protect the fragile environment. Roy was clever, and his wit and use of puns were present to the end. His inventive ingenuity is well-remembered by many and still evident in numerous solutions. Roy was well-known for his crowded truck bed beneath the camper shell, but a closer look would reveal tarps, jackets, tools, water, stuffed animals, umbrellas - a hodgepodge of just-in-case items for assisting someone in need. Ever a philanthropist, Roy will be fondly remembered by many community volunteers for his generosity toward them and their diligent work to a worthy cause. Roy was an accountant with Sandia Labs for twenty-five years, after which he enjoyed traveling. Later, he devoted his time tending to his aging mother. He is survived by "the love of his life", Rose Brigham and her caring daughter Susan; devoted daughters Jeanette Hunter and Cindy Hunter-Crofton; son-in-law Chuck Oliver; and grandchildren David, Travis, Tiffany, Doug, Cheryl, Jake, Katie, Dillon, and Cheyenne. He will be forever in our hearts and prayers. Services will be held Sunday, Feb. 3rd at 10:00am at the Piru Activity Center near the corner of Central and Juan Tabo; 12300 Piru Blvd. SE. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Alaska Wilderness League or a local community charity.
