BATES -- MARY LOUISE Of Galena, KS, age 69, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 6:25 pm from complications of long-term illness. Louise was born September 7, 1942 in Riverton, Kansas to Clyde and Kathryn (Herrin) von Wedel. She graduated Riverton High School in 1959, and married her husband, Gene, on September 14, 1960 at the First Baptist Church Riverton. They moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1961 where they lived until 1979, when they moved to Vienna, Austria where they lived for 16 years. Louise enjoyed gourmet cooking and was a member of the Cooking Group of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Vienna International Choir. In 1995, Gene and Louise moved back to their old stomping grounds in Galena. Louise enjoyed singing with the Keenagers and the MSSU Choral Society, serving at the Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum, becoming a Master Gardener and raising orchids. Louise is survived by her husband, Gene; sister, Kerry Ryan (Riverton, KS); son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Lisa Bates (Boulder, CO); and two grandsons and grand-daughter-in-law, Steven, Carson and Aubrey Bates (Golden, CO). She was preceded in death by her brother, Max von Wedel. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 25th at the Riverton First Baptist Church beginning at 4:00 pm.
