TROUP -- DR. GARY MILLER beloved husband, father, and a long serving Professor of Pathology at the University of New Mexico Medical School, died Thursday morning April 26 at age 81 in Albuquerque. He was born June 22, 1930 in Middletown, Ohio where he was a high school football star. He attended Miami of Ohio University as an undergraduate where he gave up football in order to prepare for medical school. He graduated from University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1956. That same year he married Margaret Ellen Wallace, his wife and trustworthy companion of 56 years. He performed a rotating internship at the University of California, San Francisco in 1956 followed by a residency in pathology at the University of California, Los Angeles. From 1961 to 1963 he served in the US military as a member of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima, Japan, where he did research on the health effects of long term radiation exposure. He returned from Japan to the US to become a member of the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center. In 1969 he moved with his family to Albuquerque where he joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico Medical School. As a physician Gary was an expert in the study of histocompatibility - the science that underpins organ transplantation - and played an important role in defining the HLA antigens. At UNM he served as the long term Director of the Histocompatibility Laboratory, established New Mexico's first kidney transplantation program, and worked with international collaborators leading to further discoveries in the field. Gary's work with Native Americans contributed data to many of the International Histocompatibility Workshops over the decades and provided solid leads as to the ancestry of New Mexico's Zuni tribe. While at the University of New Mexico he served as Director of Hematology and Director of the Blood Bank. Gary retired in 1996. In retirement, he enjoyed many hobbies including fly fishing, golf and duplicate bridge. Gary is survived by his wife Marge, two children, Carol Bailar of Albuquerque and Charles Troup of Livermore, California, and four grandchildren, Dean and Derek Bailar and Josiah and Malcolm Troup. A memorial service will be held on May 19 at 11:00 a.m. Parties interested in attending can contact Carol Bailar at 505-268-1445.
