SANDO -- JOE SIMON Age 88, an Albuquerque resident since 1961, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Raised at Jemez Pueblo, NM, he attended the Santa Fe Indian School, Eastern New Mexico University and Vanderbilt University. An educator, author and historian, he received many awards including an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of New Mexico. During World War II he served in the US Navy on the USS Corregidor. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Louisa; daughter, Deryn Avritt and husband, Mike of Louisville, CO; son, Parker Sando and wife, Virginia of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Michelle Barkley and husband, Scott of Colorado Springs, CO, Monica Avritt of Boulder, CO, and Dorothy Sando of Albuquerque; great-grandsons, Robert and Joe Barkley of Colorado Springs, CO; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins at the pueblo.
