DORWIN -- Robert A. Dorwin, age 87, of Albuquerque, passed away on May 4, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Olympia Lee Dorwin; one daughter, Cynthia Dorwin Frank; two grandchildren, Christina Marie Frank and Austin Robert Frank all of Albuquerque; two brothers, Allen (Connie) Dorwin of Albany, New York and Rodney O. Dorwin of Almagordo, New Mexico; one niece, Pamela Dorwin of Albany, New York; and two nephews, Rodney O. Dorwin of Long Island, New York and Robert Malinconico of St. Port Lucie, Florida. Robert was born on May 5, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Rodney O. and Julia A. Dorwin. Growing up in New Jersey, Robert became a huge baseball fan. The New York Yankees were looking at signing him as a first baseman when WWII started. Robert said goodbye to baseball and enlisted in the Merchant Marines. After the war, he completed his education at the Lincoln Institute in Linden, New Jersey, the College of St. Joseph and the University of New Mexico. On August 28, 1948, he was married to his childhood sweetheart, Olympia Nunziato in Keyport, New Jersey. The newlywed couple then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Robert served on the Albuquerque Police Department for the next 25 years as a police officer walking his beat on Central Ave, he later became a detective, and was a fingerprint expert. When he retired he was wearing Badge #1. In 1954, Robert and Olympia were blessed with the addition of their only child, Cynthia. Cynthia was the joy of Robert's life. In 1983 and again in 1987, Robert became a proud grandparent to both Christina and Austin. Robert was a talented oil-base artist, as well as a gun enthusiast. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling with Olympia. A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at French ~ Lomas Chapel. A private interment will be at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
