DEXTER -- Kathleen (Katy) Dexter, a resident of Albuquerque, died on May 11, 2011 at La Vida Llena Retirement Center in Albuquerque after 88 years of loving service to her family and to God. Kate was born on October 22, 1922 in Wausau Wisconsin. She attended the University of Wisconsin Nursing School, graduated in 1945 as a Registered Nurse. In June of 1954 Kay commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps and in September was shipped to the Philippines. She returned to the US in the fall of 1946, and was discharged from the Army and attended a semester at Catholic University in Washington DC. On May 1st, 1948 Kate married George Dexter, an Army officer she had met in the Philippines. George stayed in the Army, and together Kate and George travelled to many stations within the United States, to include Fort Benning Georgia, the Washington DC area, Fort Leavenworth Kansas, New Orleans Louisiana, West Point New York, Carlisle Barracks Pennsylvania, and Austin Texas. In all Kay and George moved 19 times during their Army years. Also during these years Kate gave birth to eight children. For his final tour before retirement George was assigned to the ROTC program at the University of Texas in Austin. While they were in Austin Kay went back to school to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In 1976 Katy and George with their remaining four children moved to Albuquerque where they built a passive solar adobe home in Sandia Heights. Katy worked for the Albuquerque Visiting Nurses Service for eight years, visiting homebound patients primarily in the North Valley. George and Katy became active in the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Marriage Enrichment Program and a Home Bible Study group through their Catholic parishes of Risen Savior and Prince of Peace Catholic Churches. They also traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. In 2004 they moved into the La Vida Llena Retirement Center in Albuquerque. Katy is survived by her husband of 63 years, George Dexter; her children, George Patrick Dexter, John Hodge Dexter, Mary Melinda (Minna) Dexter Santos, Michael Edward Dexter, James Gerard (Bone) Dexter, all of Albuquerque, Kathleen Ann Dexter of Penasco, NM, David Grant Dexter of Anchorage, AK and Sally Jean Dexter Leon of Lancaster CA. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A Rosary will be said for Katy at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the Daniels Family Funeral Services, Wyoming Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on May 19, 2011 at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 12500 Carmel NE, at 10:00 a.m., to be followed by a reception at the church. Interment will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery that afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the memory of Kathleen to the St Vincent de Paul Society, 4301 4th St NW, Albuquerque, N.M. 87107.
