GREENSBORO -- Donald Monroe McCormick Sr., 83, passed away on March 19, 2011, at Wesley Long Hospital. His immediate family was able to visit with him at his bedside. Don was a native of Greensboro, born to Charles Monroe and Myrtle Williams McCormick. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1945, was subsequently accepted into pilot training in the Navy, and graduated from NC State University in 1951. He overcame tremendous obstacles to touch countless lives with his goodness, honesty, sharp mind, and generous nature. He developed a deep faith in the Lord. Don took great pride in contributing to his community, and enjoyed giving a positive greeting to everyone he encountered, always giving encouragement. While pursuing a passion for mechanical/architectural experimentation and industrial design, he also enjoyed listening to music and catching up on the news. He coached Little League, sang in the church choir, and loved peanuts, cookies, books, and TV. While enjoying those interests, no passion surmounted his love for his family and friends around him. His greatest pride and sense of peace came from knowing that his core values and deep rooted beliefs, the essence of his being, will be carried forth in this world by his family, to whom he gave a similar outlook toward life. Don was preceded to rest by his sisters Dorothy McCormick Salls and Myrtle McCormick Winslow, nephews Charles "Chick" William McCormick, Michael Eugene Salls, David Bryan Salls and niece, Leigh Salls Mallon. He is survived by his brother Charles "Bill" William McCormick of Denton, NC; son Don M. McCormick, Jr., his wife Suzanne, of Summerville, SC; grandson, Donald M. McCormick, III., of Monks Corner, SC; son John L. McCormick, MD, his wife Terry, granddaughter Rachel Marie McCormick of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who became very close to him, cared deeply for him, and whom he loved dearly. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 7, 2011, 10:00 AM, at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, 5926 Friendly Ave., Greensboro. A family graveside service will subsequently take place at Green Hill Cemetery. Please provide memorial donations to Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Inc. of Greensboro, as it has provided superb, meticulous, and faithful care to Don for over three years.
